I enjoyed the video and learned from it, the part about focus was great. I was living in Maine and with a friend hunting rabbits, he was able to spot rabbits very easily in dense brush. I asked him how he did it and he told me he trained his eyes to look for small circles the pupil of the rabbit eyes, once he fount the eyes he was able to figure out the body outline. He said that the circle is rare in nature and seems to be mostly in the shape of many animal pupils. Close range ambush hunters need to hide that feature from the next meal. It is very hard to see vertical slit eyes looking through tall grass. Large cats (lion, tiger leopard and jaguar) have round pupils and they hunt day and night.

My cat pupils changes normal slit at morning and giant ass circle at night

Large cats such as lions and tigers have round pupils like we do.

That's because being higher off the ground helps better with perception meaning the eyes don't have to pull off as many tricks to get amazing depth accuracy

@@Mark-dm4dd I think there eyes change off light. There eyes can become slit like due to light. I could be wrong.

Not a single answer about the video's questions... Weasels hunt by ambush, very close to the ground and have round pupils

so why do lions or other big cats not have slit eyes??

Those ones may not hunt at night. It's also entirely possible that they simply have not evolved to have slit eyes.

Most of them hunt day and night, and ambush just like cats, so there's no clear answer to that, but cats and their predecessors breed much faster than big cats, so their tendency to mutate is much bigger, and probably the eyes were one of those mutations, that's what I think.

It’s believed to be because domestic cats usually hunt below grass level and the slit eyes helps them focus through the tall grass. That’s why predators like Foxes and many reptiles that hunt below grass level have slit eyes.

Good point , but in essence lions still have elliptical pupils , more rounded though because unlike housecats most bigger felines also hunt during the daytime. Whilst lions do hunt by day they will have evolved to have less sensitive retinas. Therefore they may not need to have their eyes slitted during the day.

I would like to publicly dispute these postulations with my own experience: steriopsis is not how we judge distance alone. Athletes born with a condition known as strabismus, use one dominant eye to do the work of 2. Very accurately. I can also close one eye and perform as well as with 2 open when peripheral vision is not a factor. Such as hitting a tennis ball, or baseball, or shooting a basket ball. More research needs to be included in a video like this, if you expect it to be met without critical review.
