Why Are Archers Fat?

If you're watching the Olympics and wondering why so many archers look overweight, it's nothing to do with stability. And no, not everyone can suddenly turn into a master archer with a dad bod.

    ... in a sport with very little competition... Even competitive video gamers benefit from being physically fit, there just is not that much competition in archery to where fitness makes enough of a difference... The bigger and more competitive the sport gets, we will see more and more archers taking fitness seriously.

    Spot on. The physical diversity you see in competitive archers is not a product of what is necessary for success, but instead a reflection of the fact that waistline measurements have a negligible impact on archer performance. For any sport, physical build comes down to how success is measured. You'll see a correlation between more "athletic" builds and success being a function of moving the athlete over a distance in the shortest possible time. Moving more mass more quickly requires more power. The more power you're trying to generate, the harder it is to sustain that power for longer. Being successful requires athletes to minimise mass while maximising power output (power to weight ratio) for the required duration of their activity. For example, 100m sprinters tend to have more muscle bulk because they're optimised to generate extremely high power, but only for a very short duration. Long distance runners opt to be lighter so that they can run lower, more sustainable power output for very long durations. In target archery the athlete remains stationary, so power to weight ratio is irrelevant. What matters is the muscles required to draw the bow string, position the bow, and stabilise the body.

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    3 жыл бұрын

    It's interesting to note that the burst-potential of a sprinter is idolised through media ("the fastest man alive!") and their physique represents the peak of human fitness, while the thinner long-distance runners are sidelined even though they might look unhealthier than the "overweight" athletes in other sports.

  • @infinity345

    @infinity345

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@NUSensei Indeed. Perhaps some of that can be attributed to media's inherent love of sensationalism. Really we should be qualifying that as "Fastest man alive (over 100m)!" I'm sure there's someone faster than the Olympic gold medallist over 1m. ;) It's also worth wondering whether the sprinter physique is idolised in that way because it's visibly fast, or because it conveniently aligns with the media's concept of a perfect physique?

    Pretty simple explanation. Archery is not physically demanding sport. It doesn't require stamina or a large amount of strength. However if you look at bow-hunters, many of them are in athletic shape. Getting close to an animal takes a lot of rigorous footwork while hauling extra weight. Not only that heavier draw weight is prioritized over super precise accuracy. The isolated act of archery is not a physically demanding activity.

    It's interesting that you put up the hypothetical increase in competitiveness being a driver for fitness. In S. Korea, where archery is an elite competitive sport, we still see the top archers (Kim Woojin, Oh Jin Hyek) being big-bodied despite their professional status and daily training routine, which makes top archers from other countries look like high school kids. The focus on archery training simply isn't in overall fitness.

    Snarky comments notwithstanding (many of which I enjoyed) I think the better question is why so many archers are deconditioned. My archery improved dramatically and I greatly reduced muscle aches after I started a regular conditioning program. I prefer 3D as opposed to static archery. In addition to 30 minutes of archery 5 days a week, I walk at least a mile each day and practice another 30 minutes of beginner yoga postures. If I can do this at 71, all archers should be able to add some reasonable conditioning program to their practice. The vast majority of us will never have Ms. Loring’s physique, we will all enjoy archery more and improve with conditioning.

    it is pretty easy : archery is a standing, relaxing, literally not moving sport or martial art. You are using only verz few muscles, and it wont burn literally any extra fat, no matter how heavy is your bow. You burn more fat to going and picking up your arrows from the target than from a 2 hour shooting session. However if you are a horseback archer you will become lesser fat, it burns some fat to trying to stay on a horse while shooting.

I am a better archer today than I was a year ago, but that comes down to practice and learning. I definitely feel off more often now than I used to, my heart rate gets elevated more easily, which I notice when I shoot, and muscle fatigue seems to set in more noticeably than it used to even though I still shoot 60-100 arrows a day. Being in shape definitely helps, and I need to get back there before December when I have my next backpack hunt.

    Don't take his word 100% the archer dose need a bit of arm too hold the bow up and steady in a match with the bow holding hand as well as have good finger strength in the string pulling hand or it will hurt a bit to shoot a bow with both body parts over time. Also the eye coordination needed to train the eyes for aiming has got to be there for the top level of archers. The other thing you need is the ability to do the same motion with parts of the body over and over that is like hand coordination not needing to be connected to the eyes. These things come with time but there is not a need unlike other sports like sprinting or the two types of throwing bodies like the Javelin/Discus slimmer muscles and the Hammer/Shotput, the rugby or USA/Canadian football none of that is really needed not even a hockey ice or field goalie shape is needed. Oh sure you might find a few in archery the guy who has a better body but really only other sport in Summer Olympics that is more like this is the rifle and handgun target stuff and they can be less in shape then the archery people, winter Olympics has the sport of Curling and they tend to look not in shape unlike most other sports including the skeleton and luge where they have been seen with a not so slim body but have strong muscled arms and legs.

    Archers don't NEED more fitness than required to lift and carry your groceries to your car ... THe opposing forces when at full draw make the bow set up almost weightless, and the pressure on the finger is only for few seconds...

    It's definitely skill and talent. And it does require an amount of physical control. NOT STREGNTH But when you observe most archery competitions, they're mostly stationary. And they are not required to move to point A to B. Now, warrior archers are moving. Archers who hunt, are moving.

    Fantastic Question

  • @HandyL
    @HandyL3 жыл бұрын

    I have thought the same question from time to time, hehe. Funny side note, I grew up with my best friend being one out of five Korean boys (I'm half Korean) and the third middle brother was by far heavier than his siblings and had a build similar to Kim Woo-Jin. All five brothers played sports and were competitive but I have to say that the third heaviest/fat brother was the best athlete and most talented when he applied himself. His hand eye coordination was noticeably superior to his brothers. So, maybe there is something to being heavier and excelling at certain sports.
