Why Are Americans Buying Italian Football Clubs?

Спорт

Try The Athletic for FREE for 30 days: theathletic.com/tifofootball
There is a wave of American-owned clubs in Serie A currently. Roma, AC Milan, Fiorentina, Parma, Spezia, Bologna, and Venezia are all under American or Canadian control, that’s more than a quarter of the league clubs.
Why do they want Italian clubs? Why are the Italian federations letting them? And is it working out for them?
Seb Stafford-Bloor writes, Henry Cooke illustrates.

Thanks to those that pointed out we have our billions and millions mixed up at 4:18! Correction: In a 2021 Forbes list of the world’s most valuable clubs, no Italian side featured in the top-ten and Juventus, ranked 11th, were the only one to have a valuation in excess of $1bn. Even AC Milan ($559m) and Roma ($548m), one a multiple Champions League winner, the other a regular participant, were sandwiched between Everton ($658m) and West Ham ($508m).

I worked on the diligence for The Friedkin Group on the Roma acquisition; it was by far the most interesting and crazy project I ever worked on. There were fans with phones following us everywhere, loitering outside the hotel, getting tips off hotel staff as to where we were eating, and it even developed into a TV camera loitering outside the Roma offices towards the end of our stay. The fans are passionate and the club has so much potential, it’s been nice to see their improvement since those days (right before the pandemic began).

To what degree does the Italian bureaucracy create unnecessary hurdles for stadium building or renovation? Seems like many owners (not just Americans) commit to building new facilities for their respective clubs, but often meet heavy resistance which inevitably leads to a loss in revenue and damages their relationship with fans. You'd think that, given how beautiful Italy is as a country, they could find ways to make this work without sacrificing any natural/historic views.

MLS is a racket/ ponzi scheme. To think that league has that many teams. Italy is not lke American sports where teams threaten to leave if the TAXPAYERS don't build Billionaire owners a stadium or Arena. Also, stadiums in Italy are there for football. Not the private boxes, food and drink, Half Time show, the Phillie Phantic. Most stadiums are owned by the municipality. This is why many of them have running tracks because they are mult-purpose. Juve kickstarted the idea (in italy, anyways) of owning your own stadium. I do hope other teams in Italy follow suit.

Admittedly idk much about mlb but following the NHL you'll see that the richest teams haven't won a title for years like the maple leaves and New York Rangers whereas the Vegas Golden Knights have won more recently. I don't see how it's a Ponzi scheme still. American leagues are much more competitive as a result and not decided by rich teams.

I say this for years infrastructure, to going with the time, is the real problem of the Serie A, based on the football played, it has great quality, it is changing, is going more towards attacking football, and the last European title, with the National team, is showing this, this can give an extra boost to the Serie A, when you watch the games more goals, to less defensive play, more like everyone want to play like Atalanta style, in short the first that make a Stadium in the Serie A, not talking about Juventus, but the most difficult teams, it can break the ice.

As a Milan fan I can confirm that building a stadium is near impossible here in Italy. Living in Milan both Inter and Milan have suffered from trash owners in recent year and it's clear that both the owner of Milan and Inter are waiting to sell the clubs. Inter owner, which is Suning company, has lost a lot of value and lost so much money that they had to let go of their best assets last summer: Conte, Lukaku and Hakimi. Milan will host the 2026 olympics and both clubs hope that the new stadium will be built by then but in a few weeks there is the mayor election that is using this topic to get votes; many people don't want the destroyment of San Siro, which is arguably a top 5 football stadium in the world, but both clubs want a new one because the revenue are so low compared to the Juventus stadium (100 millions vs 35). By the end of the year the construction of the new stadium will be starting hopefully

You explain it very well, serie A is a top league clubs are known world wide and their cost is relatively cheap...to buy Roma at 70 millions euro is an incredible bargain. Many of Americans buyers are of Italian descent so there's clearly an attachment to their heritage there...However as you explained it Italy is not USA or Canada or even The UK.. Calcio is deep rooted in their culture but Italians are a old society which doesn't like to change quickly. Racism, match fixing, very old stadium etc...that league have many problems which the same Italian authorities are very reluctant to address because it has always been part of calcio according to them...Since their world cup at home only Juventus have a brand new stadium, no other clubs even renovated their. . which is shocking for anybody but not Italian authorities. The truth is if these owners failed to modernize serie a they probably will leave fast as they came.

It's not been a runaway success certainly. The American owners at Roma and Milan invest nowhere enough to be able to compete with Inter for example. No progress on stadium projects either, just announcements without time frame. Across Europe Liverpool are possibly the best-run among the US-owned clubs while Man Utd and Arsenal have flopped dramatically under American owners. Even there FSG is not quite willing to invest as much as Abu Dhabi or Abramovich do.

If someone like Kyle Krause bought Parma whom is in Serie B, means he come with serious commitment and I think it will bear results in the near future. If Dan Friedkin can persuade JM to manage Roma, the rest of American owners also can do the same to persuade top Coach to come to Serie A. My tip: Fiorentina could following Milan & Roma as football club in terms of brand development and this season they also play attractive football. For neutral fans, you all would love to watch Fiorentina outside Atalanta.

I have to ask. From the looks of it these American owners value sustainability so much (that's a positive!), they want to not keep operating at a loss every season so inevitably, talks of a "closed system" will probably be presented to Serie A after a few years especially if those projects slow down. Either in the form of an MLS like league or a breakaway "Premier League." Will Serie A have a way to address this? Or are the owners steering away from that after the super league collapse?

  • @alohatigers1199

Well, there’s no doubt that you can’t fund a league, with a 2nd division and 3rd division. That’s too much money, too much funding. That’s why the English leagues below prem are desperate for fundings because they are lacking the funds. It shows that the NBA, NFL, MLS, these America leagues are self sustainable, which means they are very financially stable. People may not like it because there’s no competition, no “relegation” but financial sustainability is the #1 priority. That’s why these Americans teams have the funds while English clubs in lower leagues don’t.
