Animal crossing is not all about customization. At least, it didn’t used to be. It used to be more about simulating life and socializing with villagers. Newer titles lost interesting villager dialogue and made the world too customizable and basically made you a god or dictator instead of living the life the other villagers are living. Good review btw! This game doesn’t get enough attention

I agree. Decorating and customizing things used to not only have limits but also be a background element to gameplay as a whole. By the time we've gotten to New Horizons, there isn't any other gameplay. There's only changing how things look and nothing else to do

I'll be the contrarian and say I really like the Wii controls. If you have a nunchuck, you basically only use the Wii mote for the inventory, and it's pretty natural, faster than if you had to use the D-pad. They even let you plug in a USB keyboard to type, so you can avoid using the motion controls 99% of the time. It's also really cool that you can wave to villagers with it and catching fish is faster when you shake the wii mote.

For cityfolk you can do pretty much every action (except for the menu and your pockets) without pointing and clicking! If you make sure the remote does not point towards the screen/is "out of bounds", you can click "a" then it interacts with whatever is exactly in front of you. So talking, catching bugs/fish/fossils, opening doors, all of that :)

While not being my very first entry of the series, city folk was the first one I got pretty soon after release. It is also the one I have most nostalgia for, so I can totally agree with your conclusion. Playing on a big screen also had its very own appeal. Although not being portable, it created a whole new atmosphere back then, trying to catch a scorpion or tarantula at night on a big tv screen, while everything is dark. With new Upscaling possibilities, I think it looks just so nice and is indeed the best and prettiest classic AC!

One critisism I hear sometimes and I honestly don't understand is when people point out how there aren't any new villagers... Like there are SO many and you only ever have 10 live in your town, there's now way you would've had all of them live in your town. Technically when a villager moves in, they're always new to you... arent they?

Finally a real GOOD review of a game aaaah there are so many bad reviews out there and it's fantastic that you managed to be sincere about Let's Go to the City I actually started my first town in Let's Go to the City (trust me it's hard to be European and having to write the whole name) in 2023 and I loved the game. It has the athmosphere and the town feels like a town! Actually it's funny to be concious of having less customization options because you can create new ones with pre-existing objects!! It's creative!! I even have districts in my Wii town because City Folk towns are BIG and have TWO LEVELS! As a person who has New Leaf as his first AC game, having a bigger town on more levels just feels wonderful. Still, New Leaf will forever be the best AC game for me, but Let's Go to the City definitely occupies the second place alongside Wild World (it has charm because it's on the DS, and I would sincerely spend hours being insulted by the animals in WW :)) Well that's all, beautiful video I'm subscribing to your channel :))

Someone had to say it!!! I think we’ll always put Gamecube first for the sake of nostalgia and charm, but City Folk is such a joy. It’s got the amazing Wild World soundtrack only set to a town that’s bigger, high definition, and has a few more features. The city’s music alone takes us back to days after middle school where we finished our huge stack of homework and finally had time to relax with some Animal Crossing🥹

I've lovingly played animal crossing since the days of gamecube, back when I was a small enough tot to only be able to write "I Love You" in letters to my villagers because that was the best I could form typed sentences together at others in text and writing at the time--no other game let you write to its characters, let alone with any depth. Baby's first keyboard, truly. And I will always love City Folk. With wild world it felt far more loose and less homely or like a constructed community like the first game. The mixture of rural and cozy the first game brought [and given the traveling system was both open and different meaning it wasnt as easy to leave your town in wild world as buying another memory card.] It really both felt more loose, more open, and somehow more closed in all at once. But with city folk that community feeling came back. It was lovely, it truly felt like a sequel to the gamecube games, instead of a odd stop. Heck, in wild world you couldn't even have more than one house for all your characters, and unlocking shampoodle was a nightmare. City folk did its best, despite all the problems, to combine the the highlights of both the gamecube games and the new experiences from wild world---along with so much more. Itll always be a favorite for me, I had no clue how much it was disliked. I'll always hate how slow grass regrows in wild world, though. Absolutely abysmal. But in all other areas its a cozy gem that you can sink far more time into than wild world very easily. Wild world really felt like a pocket animal crossing, cozy and novel within itself but a little confined by that---I still love it, don't get me wrong, but city folk was absolutely a time sink of secrets and creativity for me by comparison. Both are great games in their own right. Thank you so much for making this!! Loveletters to the different animal crossings charms are the best.

Japan will remove holidays to be more like international friendly...but adding skin tones?? NAH. I always found that bizarre when this was aimed to hit international shelves...like people in countries where they're litterally darker skin tone were going to pick this game up. So people who defend that don't really understand that having to TAN your skin to get it darker in new leaf was absolutely ridiculous.

I also got introduced to animal crossing with city folk around the same time as you did, and was surprised that wild world was the more popular version, since when I got a chance to play wild world later on I had a hard time finding things to do on it and never really kept a long term town. Also I will say that wild world sis better is dislodge and villager/npc interaction because city folk has the worst diolouge out of the series, as tou mentioned the villagers started to get "nicer" however they also repeat things way to much. After talking to them once, they'll just repeat the same thing until you leave the area and it's really annoying because I've had this affect the move out process before where villagers would just never mention their still leaving and it's lead to accidental move outs.

Every time I play Wild World, I end up getting an itch to play more City Folk since it just feels like Wild World, but better (I also have the virtual console version of Wild World so while it does give the ability to have Nookington without being visited ever, it also takes away the portability aspect, so might also factor into why I prefer City Folk)

My mom was/is a fan of the series from the very start, so I got to play every game as they came out as a child. Despite that, City Folk is my absolute favorite game in the series! I see it as the definitive version of Wild World, with high quality music, better graphics, the return of complex towns, and return of real world holidays. To this day, it still feels like it has the biggest towns of any game in the series, and I remember finding little hidden areas, like near a waterfall, and just relaxing or catching fish there for hours! The only thing I hate is the grass deterioration, since it makes every town eventually become a desert due to the grass dying faster than it regrows.

  • @Frogleeoh

City Folk is certainly a very honorable entry to the series, even without online features. I personally also have nostalgia bias for it, as it was the second Animal Crossing game I played after Wild World, and was the newest one I played for several years, so it is very near and dear to my heart. That being said, I personally find it much more difficult to confidently give it the title of definitive best game in the classic era. After having played them all extensively, I have generally liked to consider Population Growing to be the best of the classic era due to its seemingly perfect balance between overall content and charm, in tandem with the ability to have several different towns on the same console and copy of the game just by using a new memory card, AND getting to visit said towns without online functionality. However, its utter lack of quality of life features, personal customization, and poorer graphics are large enough downsides to the game that I can most certainly understand it losing enough favor to be considered overall worse. Not even to mention it tragically doesn't have The Roost, one of my favorite little features in the franchise. As for how it stacks up to Wild World however, I tend to go back and forth on this a bit more. I do consider City Folk easily the best one to share a copy of the game with, due to the separate homes and collaborative features included, such as the co-op villager tasks that get unlocked, but when only thinking about a single player experience it's not so clear cut. Wild World is far more convenient on the DS, doesn't have grass deterioration, and has the best villagers in the franchise, waaaaay better than City Folk. Plus, while it may not have the biggest flashiest events, it still does have a consistent amount of events and they are a lot more unique, not to mention that events are only a small portion of a year's content. In addition to all this, Wild World does have villager AND special NPC pics to collect, as well as some really good special NPC dialogue and moments you may miss. City Folk may have overall more content and better graphics than Wild World, but I feel like it doesn't have as much charm or as consistent daily entertainment as Wild World. Ultimately it is all subjective tho and comes down to your personal situation and values. Personally I consider villagers and dynamic NPCs in general to be one of the absolute main pillars of the franchise, and arguably the most important feature of the game for consistent daily enjoyment, and Wild World nails that aspect completely. There are admittedly a ton of little things from City Folk that I absolutely wish was also in Wild World, which does add up to be a lot of missing content, but they aren't things I want so badly that I'd take them over the NPC quality and NPC pics that Wild World has, let alone the convenience of the DS and lack of grass deterioration. Either way, I think both Wild World and City Folk are valid options for best of the classic era.

Woah woah woah. City Folk isn't bad at all everyone was blind. Yes there's a few cons but it's literally in the top 3 best Animal Crossing games like ever. First off the Pros 1. No DLC 2. You can transfer Wild World data to City folk which City Folk is the only one that has this sort of feature including Wild World. 3. It keeps the challenges from the villages like Wild World. 4. It brought everything together in Shops. I know New Leaf has slightly better but City Folk was first. For the Cons 1. Taking the bus is drag to get to the City or visiting someone elses village. 2. Only in multiplayer, if anyone messes up the town flag only they can change it nobody else. 3. Limited choices to choose rather then having unlimited choices. I am talking about either a lighthouse or a windmill but you can only have one.

Population Growing was my first Animal Crossing game, and funny enough, I completely skipped over Wild World and went straight to City Folk. To me, City Folk was the definitive game for me, and it's were my fondest memories are from. I got City Folk when it came out with the WIiSpeak mic and I made so many friends (I used to have a video on my channel sharing my friend code) and honestly, I don't remember it being that bad to use, even with multiple people at my town and all of us using the WiiSpeak. But then again, I was in elementary school at the time so it probably was more cool than bad at the time. Funny enough, I'm playing Wild World NOW lol and I love it since it is nearly identical to my favorite, City Folk :) New Leaf was great and I also played that at launch, and New Horizons is also fine. But those games just don't hit the same as the first 3

Ngl when I was 8, I though Wild World looked incredibly good. I started playing again now and I don't know how I could ever think that! 😂 But I literally just got City Folk for the first time and I kinda love it because of the fact that it's basically a Wild World remake with better graphics. This was probably the reason why I never really wanted to get it as a kid, but now that I'm back to playing the old titles it's perfect. In all honesty - the WW hourly music is one of the main reasons for me to revisit those games. Brings back all these memories.

So I'm a Population Growing veteran to the series and have played every game except for HHD and the WiiU board game one for obvious reasons. I personally feel like for actual playability, Wild World and City Folk are on par with each other when I really feel like City Folk should inch ahead. City Folk has more things in it. Which should be good, more things means more stuff to do. With it fixing some of the criticism of its predecessor like adding back in the holidays we actual enjoy and giving us separate houses again, it was a positive. The problem is that while each game has its criticisms, the valid criticisms for City Folk truly did knock it down be about on par with the DS entry. Its a matter of preference regarding the controls and the portability functionality vs home console. Those are debatable. I find Wild World has more charm for villagers and City Folk has more charm for NPC's. Also depends on what you prefer there. For some reason Wild World felt very empty for me. But in the same vein, the city, you know... the actual marketing point for the Wii title, didn't even feel like a city. It also felt pretty lifeless where I think if they somehow were able to section off areas for each thing it would have felt more like a city. They were very smart with how they went about this shop hub scenario with Main Street in New Leaf since it matched the aesthetic that they said it was. The City in City Folk felt like a more urban "town" rather than the forest villages we are from. And there's just a massive distinction between these three themes of livable locations. I prefer playing City Folk over Wild World so let's not get it twisted since there's just point-blank more to do in that game plus the decoration options are leagues better than Wild World's. But the flaws really knock it down hard. I also feel like we can't even compare Population Growing to any other entry for if anything after it is better. That game is it's own entity where it's like comparing the rest of the games as fruits when Population Growing is straight up a vegetable. All the other entries are just going to have more in them. But I'll be honest, arguably it feels like Wild World detracted established things just as much as they added new stuff from its predecessor. Population Growing had campy charm but was limited to the times of the era. But that in itself also can be said to (almost) every entry based on the hardware. Its how the cookie crumbles. Wild World added in the most desired features we wish Population Growing had, but removed core charming elements from the original. City Folk levels down to Wild World because it back tracked some of what was lost in the previous entry, added relatively minor updates (yes the city is pretty minor its truly just not that exciting to go there you can be in and out in 2 minutes) and had MASSIVE problems that weighed it down. From there its a matter of what flaws aren't as bad to you or what perks were more important. And I won't even touch upon the rest because those two entries changed the entire series into something "new" (pun intended).

I should probably come back to this video when I've actually played the game (lol), but I really enjoyed the video along with the research put into it. though I wish you explained more about why you liked the game, it felt like you were just listing all the new features it had. 15:41 I so agree about Phineas, I love him (can we also talk about Wendell, I miss him dearly) Also I can't believe city folk and wild world introduced all these NPCs, and were even brought back in new leaf, only for nh to remove them u_u

honestly my only critique of city folk is the system it was on. animal crossing being portable and not having motion controls is just superior but everything else about the game is 💯

Keep an eye on this game, I promise you within two years this game will have a resurgence for a few reasons. Make sure you have a hacked wii and legit copy of the game before then because prices for both will only be going up with time.

For any returning fans, you can turn off grass decay with gecko codes on a hacked Wii, there's basically no reason not to if you own a wii and dislike the feature, it's free and easy. Also "Walking instead of running reduces grass decay" is a myth, grass will decay at the same rate regardless so long as you travel over it, the only difference is that if you're walking, you're going to travel less across the day in total (Ie you get less done) so of course the grass doesn't decay as fast - you're not using it as much! Best way to maintain it? Place path designs and use literally only those as much as you can, tree's also help. I recommend the Gecko code

My two gripes with City Folk are the wii remote controls and it's too similar to Wild World. If there was GameCube controller support & if there were other features brought over from GCN Animal crossing or had the hindsight to have something from New Leaf, may have kept my interest. Maybe with the DS Suitcase, they could have treated the move like a new game plus, brought a couple villagers from your DS town to your Wii town, or being allowed to repurchase exclusive items from the DS. Just my two cents on it.

While I don't think CF is bad, it has a lot of things working against it. The controls, the grass deterioration (which still sucks in NL), not being on a handheld console, and the villagers not being as interesting as in the older games. Despite all its limitations, I think Wild World is the best of the older games.

I'm glad to hear on how you said that City Folk may not as well be the MOST ABSOLUTE BEST, but you stated that the game had good superiority above Wild World and Population Growing. In return, Its a better choice than Wild World, for others who don't have Wild World, or for others who want an upgrade.

This was my first ever animal crossing game way back in the day and I'll always love it. One day back in like 2010 my mum came home and got me and my sister together because she said she'd bought something for us both which is something she almost never did spontaneously like this. She opened a plastic bag and pulled out lego star wars for me and animal crossing lets go to the city for my sister. Basically, the only reason animal crossing became such a huge part of my childhood was because my mum was buying a game for me but didn't want to be unfair to my sister so on a complete whim she bought a game she'd never heard of that just looked cute which to me is actually crazy. I love this game so much I will never listen to the haters lol Also as an english person I'll never call it city folk but lets go to the city is such a stupid name lol

Fun fact Animal Crossing for the GameCube does not have a subtitle. Population growing is simply a tagline on the box art. A) does it say population growing literally anywhere else? Say the title of the game? No. B) no one calls Pokemon Red Version "Pokemon gotta catch em all Red version" but thats literally what the boxart says, because its just a tagline for the box art.
