It's very cheap, but it's also not entirely free to go to the doctor. For example, we pay 15€ every time we schedule a consultation and if we need blood work and other tests done, there is a small fee attached. Usually though, it's insignificant. Amalie had an ultra sound, blood work and a bunch of other stuff done two years ago and it was around 80€ in total. In other words, it's infinitely cheaper than in the US and most likely the same quality, if not better. Cheers from us two ❤

Madeira, but I'm biased, I was born there. I do love the Azores for vacation but for me the weather is better in Madeira, it is more developed, it has more activities and commerce, it is closer to mainland Europe for quick flights to Lisbon. Downside is the airport closing during high wind days. Of course it the airport didn't close, the airplanes might end up in the ocean...😲

Very reasonable. Doctors are very highly educated a precious resource we all need. We have to keep them happy and respect their talents. Thank you doctors.

As a Portuguese my fear is that my country gets to overcrowded, I don’t want it to lose its essence, many locals can’t afford housing and services because of the rise of prices due to the excess of tourism and immigration

this is not unique to any place on the planet at the moment. every place that attracts tourists is experiencing the same issues. as a Canadian living in Mexico I have run into this and so I no longer live at the beach in Puerto Vallarta where prices have almost doubled in the last 3 years. but dont worry, the elites in control of our planet are working on depopulating it and making air travel illegal, so all will be fine in the end (depending on your perspective of course).

The lack of assimilation by many to the traditions in the US and vilification of groups are disheartening and among the reasons people want to leave. We are leaving the US and coming to Portugal we will accept the traditions and not try to change Portugal in anyway.

We're rural (São Vicente), but it is great how easily we can be anywhere on the island. We keep hoping we'll run in to you two. We love your videos.

Madeira is absurdly beautiful

In Madeira property (and rental) prices have been going through the roof the last couple of years, pushing out locals and giving uncertain futures and an enormous amount of stress for people. I'd say Madeira is not so much the next big destination but more now a place where the bubble is popping from already having hyperinflated prices due to influencers and remote workers who took to the island during the pandemic (where it was, at least for a long period) something of a safe haven from covid. This has led to a huge influx of foreigners wanting the "instagram lifestyle" and large overseas investment companies buying up properties and renting them out at ridiculous rates (often 3 or 4 times what they were on the market for previously) which has led to a great deal of problems for local people who have lived in Madeira all their lives. At the same time, and it may just be a coincidence, homelessness, crime and drug use has risen sharply and eveyone who lives on the island is seeing and talking about this. It is also worth noting that many of the tourist attraction places have, in a short space of time, become ridiculously overcrowded compared to only a few years ago. It is a shame, because Madeira is a lovely island full of calm, patient and tolerant people, who deserve better than being pushed out from their own forefathers land and / or living in desitution.

My parents emigrated to Canada when I was very young. I love Canada but in my heart I feel a strong pull to return to Portugal to help contribute in a non capitalist way to possibly help maintain a way of life that my fore fathers created. You can take the boy out of Portugal but you can't take the Portugal out of that boy. I was less than 2 years old at the time. My parents loved Canada for what their own country couldn't help provide for them at the time. I feel it's my time to help give something back . I have many friends from different cultures around the world who feel the same as I do.Lets try and help celebrate one anothers unique culture without exploiting it for one's own personal greed.

The point I was trying to make is that just because your ancestors were from Portugal, that doesn't mean you know shit about Portuguese culture. Because culture evolves, it doesn't stay still in time. The Portugal your parents know and told you about doesn't exist anymore. As with almost any country on earth, things have changed, a lot. In a random street cafe, one of angolan descent will be able to talk about his day to day with others, because he relates to it, he belongs here. You don't. The vast majority of those 1.4 million Americans of Portuguese ancestry are from Portuguese from the Azores especially in California, probably 90% are from families from the central group of Islands. Terceira, Faial, Pico Sao Jorge. Not many from Graciosa island in California.

Joen your Portuguese is getting better and better. Same for Amelie. One small correction : I heard Joen pronounce ‘Casa’ as Cassa. That would be the Spanish pronunciation. In Portuguese it’s pronounced CAZA. The “s” is pronounced as a “Z” unless it’s at the end of a word in which case it sounds like a soft “J” for example the word CASAS (houses) sounds like this : CAZAzh. Hope that helps.

B4 the airport, visitors arrived by cruiseship from all over... Madeira has always been a tourist destination, its not a recent thing. Madeira has a strong connection with England and many people from madeira used to work in Jersey and Guernsey Islands picking flowers or on the potato farms.

The international popularity of the portuguese TV series "Rabo de Peixe" aka "Turn Of The Tide" has helped put Açores on the map of many bucket lists.

A lot of young Madeirans that are coming out of Universities are more health conscious and choosing to be vegetarians /vegans. This is quite a trend when I travel abroad too. I guess it’s the rise of the East! People in the west are adopting more yoga, meditation, spirituality, vegetarianism, etc….

You have the islands from the south of Portugal too!!! Yes, the islands of Algarve! They are beautiful. Portugal has many islands, you need to visit all of them!

@@joaojervell5810 There are several sand barrier beaches separating Ria Formosa from the Atlantic Ocean. The "Ilha Deserta" was my childhood beach, but I wouldn't consider them as being proper islands. By those terms then we could also consider Almourol as being an island in the middle of the Tejo / Tagus river. And, by those terms also, in Madeira, the Cruise Ships Port would be in an extension of the "Ilheu da Pontinha" island.

The inefficiency we see in Portugal has to do with the following issues: 1- Very powerful trade unions in the public sector that have jobs for life. No encouragement to improve or produce. 2- The public sector is too big. 3- Monopolies in the energy and public utilities sector. 4- The justice system is inefficient on purpose to protect the powerful elites. 5- Too much regulation is preventing people from starting their own enterprises or surviving the first crucial 5 years. I’m Portuguese, a capitalist who believes in a free education that is geared towards creating free / critical thinkers and a free health systems that is geared towards prevention rather the current system that only benefits big pharma.

all 9 islands of Azores are very different in many ways: culture, history, their people, food, etc. No one should assume that visiting one island is the same as visiting all the other islands, despite the focus of the government is usually on promoting a single specific island and ignoring the others. BTW, Corvo is the most isolating island, by far.

A lot of people here complain that outsiders drive our prices up and make life unaffordable. I say that locals here have at least part of the blame, they (we) sell themselves cheap and don't defend their rights, to be taken advantage of by businessmen who are looking for the bottom line. Add an unhealthy amount of corruption. If the local civil society were better less people would have to leave to get a decent life. The problem is not the people who come, an island only survives linked to the mainland, the problem is our own options. I see no problem in having outsiders spend money here. The only problem is getting the people working here paid. The cost of life here is affordable for an outsider because the locals are kept poor, plain and simple. Locals were priced out of houses by emigrants before foreigners did it, and before that they were priced out of housing by the local elites that used to own everything. The only solution to this is not to work for anything below a decent wage, but that takes smarts and courage. It's easy to talk about but hard to do. Madeira has a small footprint, high population, amazing weather and good security. As a friend of mine once said, "Madeira is all worth gold". Madeira will always be relatively expensive because of that. Locals never had cheap housing. Enjoy your life here, most of us do not resent you for it. We mostly resent ourselves for not doing better. Although the filete the espada we got right!

If you want to know about madeira ask the locals they will show you places that tourists never get to see.

Happy for the expats, but it's tragic for the locals. It takes a special personality to thrive in an isolated environment or a period of time no matter how gorgeous it is. I grew up on a farm and at twenty moved to the Amazon Basin so I know a little bit about that. I also lost my beloved Nashville to all the "internal Immigrants" from other states like California. It's sad not to recognize your own landscape nor not to hear your own accent spoken around you any more. Good luck to all!

I went to Azores for a month in 1995. I fear this attention will ruin those delicate islands, the same way as they ruined large swathes of the Algarve. The Algarve has suffered a cultureside, most traditional architecture has been destroyed, replaced with an incongruous mess of concrete and grass, the traditional boats that respectfully pottered about with designs dating to phonecians replaced by vulgar glass fibre speed boats, the once pristeen trails covered in 💩 from people so unfamiliar with their own bodies they can't control their bowel movement. Roads into town lined with cheap warehouses housing th same handful of blind globalist companies selling their poor quality tat and ruining the environment, breaking smaller local supply chains, causing dependance on their systems.

Joen, you are the photographer. There is the title of a book by one of the worlds most famous danish photographers hidden in the audio of this video. So famous that it was mentioned by Bill Clinton in his speech in Copenhagen in ‘97. And still - a photographer almost unknown in Denmark. Can you find it?

If any Portuguese here are worried about the level of immigration going on in Portugal i want to assure you that nothing is bad with that, most people immigrating to Portugal are high net worth individuals, retirees, investors, etc and these are the people that can contribute significantly to Portuguese economy and most of these people are natured enough to understand culture and give respect to the country's and people's culture. I'm just 20yrs old and I'm from Africa, my plan is to live in a place that feels like home because my home here isn't a home for me anymore, I want peace, so why do you think I'd misbehave in a country that offered me peace? I would do everything I can to adapt to the culture and be one of you guys because I see you as my savior With alll that said; we just have to love each other no matter where we come from because that's what we need to fight against all these greedy politicians that would send us to war and make us kill each other and tell them "no we don't want war"

No one I know is concerned with “gun violence” most of the shootings happen in the nasty inner city. It used to be cheap to go to Madeira but not anymore. I almost bought a house there ended up going a different rout. If you have the opportunity to go don’t turn it up because it’s beautiful!

I'm Portuguese but have lived in North America since I was 12 (1991). After 20 years of not visiting Portugal, I finally did in 2022 and am returning again this August. Part of me is happy to see Portugal on the world stage in a way like never before. The other side of me firmly believes that the Nation will be exploited to no end in an indirect gentrification that will take years, yet will be extremely damaging to the native Portuguese and landscape. The government simply does not have the means to keep up with this growth. It's always been very bureaucratic and the relaxed Portuguese pace of living already seems to be deteriorated a little with too many crowds and price gouging like never before, especially in Lisbon but also now observed in refurbished rural villas. Again, I'm excited to see growth but it's so rapid that I fear the locals will become further impoverished because they simply will not be able to afford their country. I'm from Aveiro and fortunately there are still many beautiful places in the North to escape to and absorb the senses of old Portugal. Love your content btw and you represent Portugal very well, always! Cheers!!

Nice Numbers, so in 2023 US citizens living in Portugal 9794, so discounting 3288 that arrived in 2022, before there were 6506, so in just one year 50% more...uau ok not exodus from the total US population here because that could never be right, but quite an increase if the numbers put by you if they are correct...probably the most increase number by percentage of all the nations coming...because some nationalities we had allways in big numbers like ex colonies and northen Europe countries that do come for more sunny days....

When someone uses relative percentage such as “50% more” it’s very misleading. The smaller the sample size, the more dramatic the effect. Example: In Portugal, there was 1 person from Barbados in 2021, and there are 4 persons in 2022. (Actual SEF statistics). That is a 400% increase. Oh wow!! Using relative percentages to describe something is a way of “spinning” the data for dramatic - and often misleading effect.

@@christaylor4667 sorry about refering objectively to your numbers, and sorry again to just point out that comparing 1 with 6505 that is misleading comparison, and yes everything in the world is relative...but what you say is obvious its undeniable!!... but 1 its not even close to 6505 ...of course I know what are you saying its not like US is draining all of its people everywhere, I can even agree that Portuguese ( small country Population ) going out are much more than US citizens comming to Portugal... but that does not contradict the numbers ( and the percentages objectivly by country ) are increasing by a lot...and I even bet next year a lot more... kind regards

yeah mate im portuguese and i am fed up with this country, cheap stuff for foreign people, bunch of benefits compared to portuguese, nowadays where i live the rent use to be around 400 euros now i am paying 900 euros just because the place is full of tourists and everyone starts raising the price and we get paid the same amount of money. Im not against you by far, love your job, but the boom that all youtubers gave to portugal, wasn´t good my opinion, true portuguese people in lisbon nowadays are rare everyone is foreign

Btw we don’t want the kind of development found in Madeira etc. in the Azores. Evolve yes but not change the authenticity or character of these beautiful islands. The islands already are very evolved when it comes to creating responsible tourism structures that are environmentally friendly. Mass tourism kills the soul of most places. And with mass tourism comes destruction of the environment and mass immigration. We don’t want that either.

Who said anything about changing the authenticity?

I was there in April for a month travelled thru Lisbon Sintra Coimbra porto braga and all over algarve after hearing so much stuff about it but unfortunately was not impressed it’s run by migrants graffiti everywhere garbage over flowing cigarette butts all over the place home prices outrageous food over priced for smaller portions so guess what not for me anymore can live way cheaper and better and you can choose from so many places in US and I am a emigrant

Not really, it was more Germany than mainland. Mainland still owes money to Madeira, they always pay "mal, tarde e nunca"

We visited Madeira twice and really enjoyed it but had no desire to move there. Not a fan of seafood, your parking situation sucks, and your roads scare the Hell out of me. When we retired we moved to Texas.
