Interestingly enough this can be said about japanese people as well, the way language is taught over there is not very good at all, and most of the citizens don't see a reason to learn another language.

Same in Canada too. I know a lot of italian-canadians in my town and almost none of them could speak it. Same thing is happening in the south Asian community where most can understand their language to some degree but many can't speak it.

I agree with you when it comes to the smaller localities around the globe; less so with the international, tourism-heavy cities where it's understood that English is an intermediary language for people from other nations to communicate with each other.

I'm an English teacher in Korea and there's definitely a huge difference in ability here usually based on if you attend an excellent, fully-immersive English academy or international school. Students that go to academies or international schools typically surpass their peers that don't by a large margin. It really becomes a class issue since most academies and international schools are very expensive I also work part-time in a lab and while my mentors and superiors can read science articles in English, they can't speak it. So we just communicate in Korean (but my Korean is very bad)

@@user-dw4qm2on3b L 2 is probably referring to the level of intensity of hysterium‘s English class. The L (Leistungs Kurs= high performance class)classes are chosen two years before you graduate from Gymnasium. And Gymnasium is the form of Highschool that prepares students to go to university. It has nothing to do with the English word for the place where you’re doing sports. Children can decide at age 10 to do that or chose another school that doesn’t focus on university but vocational training afterwards. Edit: in Gymnasium everybody has to study at least two foreign languages for 6 years straight. Some do more. In L2 they aim for the international C1 language skills.

@@winterlinde5395 Thanks a lot for explanation. Haven't though people online would spend so much time on telling how things work. We have soviet- style schools that have to be re-built from zero in my opinion. Soviet- like education is an bullshit that doesn't focus on personal view of kids. I am ukrainian but i studied my first nine years in Russian- speaking school. Where i had to learn Ukrainian, Russian, English and French. Then i moved to the other school and there was only Ukrainian, English and German. I could not think about better English level than b2 since no one cares about quality of education in here.

Also because english is very easy. The hardest part of english is the pronunciation, but it isn't crucial btw since you can 'understand' hindi or muslim guys speaking english with shitty accent. Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian are related, so it shouldn't be THAT hard to learn one of those if you are a native latin-related language speaker.

  • @LanguageGuy

There is no way to objectively determine that a language is "easy" or "hard". It's all based on your native language (hence why speakers of other Germanic languages like Norwegian and Danish can often speak impeccae English). Babies learn all languages with no issues, it's not like they struggle with other languages but learn English faster or something.

One major reason why many people all over the world learn English is because a VERY large amount of internationally popular movies, TV shows, video games, music, books, and the internet itself is either made in English, or subbed/dubbed/translated into English. That means that non-English speakers have a very rich world of media to consume if they take the time to learn English. There is no other single language that has as much of an incentive to learn it media wise for people who know English as a first language.

As a monolingual English speaker, I'd say my time is better spent doubling down on the language I already know than learning a second language. This means doing a lot of reading, writing, studying grammar, vocab, and history; all in and about English. I like the idea of learning a second language and might try to someday (I have my eye on French, German, Russian, and Japanese), but proficiency and productivity in my own language comes first and foremost.
