Why American Cars Get Terrible Headlights

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Adaptive headlights now include laser technology and the most advanced systems are finally arriving. At the forefront of this technology in the US is SLD Laser which has been developing advanced headlight systems which will soon see its way into domestic cars. Unfortunately the C8 Corvette doesn't have these yet, but Geman manufacturers like Audi and BMW have been leading the charge with LED Matrix headlight adaptive headlight technology for years. The NHTSA is slowly opening up the rules for Americans see them on the road in the near future.

I know BMW has had Laser Lights available on their cars for a couple of years now. I’m not sure about how they are currently, but I know when they debuted on the i8, it only worked for high beams only. As for the Anti-Dazzle feature, you can code it on for BMWs (and I’m sure other cars as well) and enable all the EU features. You can also increase the overall brightness for low and high beams (which are decreased before the cars are brought to the States). As for adaptive headlights, my 2008 Lexus ES 350 has them and I absolutely love them. They operate only when you’re actually moving and up to 45 mph.

We are so far behind when it comes to headlight and lumen satisfaction and regulation. We need adaptive headlights, but NHTSA now has approved that, but manufacturers like GM and Ford take these approaches way too slow. Another one I want to discuss besides the technology is the color temperature. The LEDs that have been constantly manufactured have a color temperature of 7000K, which is insanely blue, but to the human eye, it looks crisp, cool white with blue aurora surrounding it. The blue around it cannot penetrate through heavy rain or snow too well. 4300K is the ideal color temperature for LEDs but it's so overlooked.

Seriously, with how limited our headlights are here in the US and how much brighter they have become it is definitely starting to become an issue. I cannot tell you how many times an oncoming car has had bright headlights and ends up blinding me temporarily at night. It's a safety risk to everyone. **Your night vision takes at least 30 minutes to fully develop** and getting blinded by an oncoming car's headlights ruins that night vision. Ruined night vision? Good luck seeing something that you would have seen if your eyes were to have been fully adjusted. Deflecting that light away to prevent blinding other drivers would stop people's night vision from getting ruined. Also, with some of the technologies here shown provide a lot more capabilities of lighting the road ahead of the car, helping to increase road safety at night. While we're finally starting to see some progress here in the us, I kind of find it unacceptable that it's happening now when other parts of the world have had it for quite some time with it working out well.

Nothing wrong with HID (Bixenon) bulbs if it’s in a proper housing. Ie; projector or manufacturer built reflector housing (with self leveling) that’s aligned for the bulb. It also has a shroud that cuts the beams pointing up but when you put it on high beams the shroud moves out of the way hence the “high beam” effect! Either way, people need to push the regulators to change the law to allow these safer (futuristic ) headlights that don’t blind people!

And while I appreciate IIHS testing lights of you look on their rating system you see a huge flaw. They are so focused on glare that they don’t look at the quality of the light. They gave the 2019 edge with led lights a fail because of the glare. I’ve driven a 2019 edge and the light width and height was fantastic. I never got flashed either. What auto makers do to avoid the glare dong is aim the lights super low. They then PSA the “glare” test but you can see anything beyond 80 feet.
