I grew UP in a presbyterian/reformed theological tradition in the Philippines. I always believed/believe in divine election even if I did not understand it the way I understand it now. Many of my friends and acquaintances do not believe in it and do not even want to hear and discuss about it. I Thank Dr. Ferguson for this clear and pastoral and loving sermon on this very important doctrine of election. I call it a major doctrine because it affects the way I live and grow as a Christian.

I think I have to agree with another commenter in this thread, that Dr. Sinclair may be greatest preacher and theologian of at least the last 50 years. We are and have been blessed with a goodly number of God-honoring teachers and preachers who maintain profound fidelity to the Holy Scriptures and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I think of Dr. John MacArthur; Alistair Begg; R.C. Sproul; Steve Lawson; and other great teachers and preachers of the Reformed faith. The quality of Dr. Sinclair's scholarship is unexcelled and compelling. What set's him apart for me is that no matter how hard the doctrine or message may be; no mater how consequential the ramifications in the lives of believers and non-believers, he always communicates his deep concern for and love for both. Even when speaking of such horrifying topics as damnation and hell, his deep heart of compassion and concern always comes through. Surely he is among the greatest teachers and preachers of the last 400 years. He never fails to illuminate and bless me through his work and service to Christ.

Why is the most common objection these days not addressed? That is, that he choose Christ as the vessel for salvation - meaning that all those who are saved, have "jumped on board" the ship of salvation i.e. the "ship" or "means" (those who trust and therefore are "in Christ") have entered the means chosen before the foundation of the world. I suppose its a corporate election.

HAPPINESS --- ONLY FOR THE GRATEFUL In heaven, as everyone is grateful, achieving happiness is the norm with everyone keeping just enough for a comfortable life, giving the rest to those who have less and no one suffers want. While on earth, as everyone is an ingrate, achieving pleasure is the norm with everyone enriching themselves upon the misery of those with less education, less wealth or less whiteness of skin. End result being, since the beginning of civilization the more intelligent upper-half of society has hoarded all the land, wealth, healthcare, political power and desdly force. For either gratitude is the motivation and giving happiness is the goal, or the glory and power of wealth is the motivation and taking pleasure can be the only possible goal,

When we are chosen, before anything else, we are given a grateful good nature. Then comes faith which is actually gratitude. And then a desire to do only good and beneficial things. And so, if you’re not doing good works and your still doing sin, what more can I say? SALVATION BY GOD ALONE ● Homeless too dumb to know God, they too are saved: "Lord, when did I feed you..." ● Most of the chosen few, they are given a grateful nature and saved at birth. ● The chosen are saved from sin by the free gifts of both a grateful nature and faith. ● Less than 5% of humanity has ever gained salvation. For earth is the realm of sin.

Why am I a Christian or what does it mean to be a Christian simply means a follower of Christ and certainly does not say you are now a true saved, converted, redeemed and born again from above in the Spirit believer who actually received in their mind the Holy Spirit from above who comes down and enter and resides in us from then on until our flesh bodies dies or still alive when Christ returns for his Bride at the imminent End of the Church Age!!! Many like you are called, (hearing of the Word), but few are chosen!!! Only the ones that received the confirmation and the manifestation of the Holy Spirit that you have been chosen to be saved who is our spirit's witness and certainly not coming from any man, pastors, preachers or teachers!!! The Church out there in the physical public have not been Spiritual but self righteous carnal minded man apostate churches for many past generations and centuries!!! Anyway, all I can hope for that some of your followers that have been deceiving themselves to believe you are saved without receiving the personal confirmation and manifestation of the Holy Spirit that you have been chosen to be saved who is our spirit's witness and certainly not coming from any man!!!

Raymond, so many words for errant Theology. The Spirit does not come into our minds but into our souls. Your entire speech is predicated on the schoolmaster or hamster wheel doctrine we in our “minds” so often do throw out at others around us. “You haven’t done enough! Your faith isn’t true! You haven’t died completely to sin because you still sin! You’re not as pure as you should be!” and on and on the accusations flow. Tell me, who is the great accuser in Holy Writ? The saints are daily accused by Satan, and Satan is correct in exposing our/your sins to God the Father. Our divine Advocate, Jesus Christ, is always rebuking the devil bc He not only died for our past sins but our present and future sins as well.our salvation is not dependent upon our doing anything. Our hope, our anchor is upon what was done for us 2000 years ago outside the city of Jerusalem. And you may want to look in your Bible what is the result of that salvation. What does Ephesians 2:10 say? Yes, there are false professors in the Church as Matthew 7:21-23 says & Matthew 13:24-30 along with most all of the parables. What you fail to realize is that apart from the external work of Christ, no one can follow Him. If anyone follows Him then they are chosen by Him and will continue to follow Him. There are many who will make a good show of following Him but will turn away from Jesus to their own sensuality thus fulfilling 1John 2:19, but you seem to with a broad stroke of a brush say “Unless you believe like me, you’re no Christian at all.” and that is so far from true. I truly hope you find “…the peace that passeth all understanding.”

@@raymondmelanson5757 Either you’re putting words in my mouth or arriving at another errant conclusion. I am not saying you are totally incorrect but one has to ask the question “What does Jesus save, our souls or something else?” Honestly, I believe that Christianity in America is dying although it is Jesus Himself that declares, “And I say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18 So is it then fair of you to say - “The church out there in the physical public have not been spiritual but self righteous carnal minded man apostate churches for many past generations and centuries!!!” In the small time that I have called myself a follower of Christ I have heard this many times, mostly from Jehovah’s Witnesses who show up to my door. Again there is an element of truth in the statement but the context does not align with the words of Jesus in Matthew 16:18 nor in my case, nor in the case of many devout Christians I have read of or fellowshiped with in the last 30 years. There are many instances where the Church has gone astray in the last 2000 years and a reading of the Epistles and the Book of The Acts of The Apostles clearly demonstrate that this was an issue within the first century Church as well, with the Judaizers as well as the “super apostles” mentioned by Paul himself. Was the first century Church corrupted then? Are the Scriptures we have corrupted also? I have heard the howling of purists within the Church and without for long enough to know that were this so we are again, ALL without hope and are hell bound at this very moment, and this again is what Satan wants us to believe. He’s had far more practice at deception than any of mankind has, and knows the Bible far better than anyone dead or alive, save Jesus Himself. I am a sinful person who has my sins taken from me and born upon (Paid for) by the Godman Jesus Christ Himself. As wonderful and so very undeserving that objective fact is, it is yet incomplete. Not only did He take upon Himself my sins (Past, present and future) but He has imputed (Credited) His perfect righteousness to me a sinner. To simply have my sins paid for at the cross would have left me with a clean slate, but as a sinner how long would that have lasted? The mind, my mind as well as your mind and everyone else’s mind on the very next thought would be condemned once again and those that accuse God the Father of child abuse would be correct. But according to Scripture such is not the case with God’s elect. I have been to heretical churches and to true Churches and by both the Holy Spirit and those children of God the Spirit has put in my life I am eternally grateful. Pastors, Elders and Deacons as well as ordinary lay people have all contributed to a greater understanding of the objective truth we are taught. I am not on a football team, nor in a Country that begins and ends at one sea or another, but am counted as part of the great cloud of witnesses whose lives have forever been changed to be a child of the Triune God. When unbelievers tell me they don’t go to Church because “The place is filled with so many hypocrites.” I tell them, “There’s always room for one more.”
