    Could you cut apart the Converse Chuck 70 Leather? You previously cut apart the regular Chuck 70 and had good things to say about them. Converse claims the Chuck 70 Leather is made with premium leather, but since they are owned by Nike, the claim is suspicious. I think it would be a good follow up to the Chuck 70 video and also a good leather sneaker comparison against the recently released and sold out MUGS. Thanks!

    thats not going to happen. they started out with very high quality materials and construction, and as they have been bought and sold again and again, they have seemed to maintain the very high quality build but they are saving money on materials. Things in our society only go in one direction, and that is down. Things get worse not better. Name one thing that's getting better. Most things in our society don't even maintain their current level for long. And that's because of the way our economy is designed. Obviously technology and innovation is the great equalizer, the great deflator, but it's balance between that and the entropy of inflation that is built into the system. brands like costco that haven't gone to trash are very rare outliers. everything else gets slowly nickle and dimed down to a shadow of itself over time, the same fate awaits Altra. Anything from a bag of chips or your favorite ice cream, to retailers, or anything else with the obvious exceptions being consumer electronics.. Consumer electronics are always getting better and cheaper. Almost everything else is getting worse and more expensive, and when vultures like private equity are involved thats the recipe for the most drastic precipitous declines. Luckily for Altra their new new owner VFC is not private equity but a publicly traded company. That means the same pressures exist but nowhere on the level that you see in private equity. And if you look at VFC you will see that they are not doing so hot. They have lost over 85% of their market capitalization since the high back right before covid while many of their competitors are reaching all time highs and generating more revenue and profits than ever. Altra's parent company is the toilet and if it doesn't turn around soon they will be on the ropes. Do you think their quality will increase under that situation? They're already losing money, so now they're going to reduce their margins to make higher quality shoes? Not a chance in hell. Expect things to get worse.

    I don't understand why "making a technically good boot" - good materials and construction - also for whatever goddamn reason seems to mean "making a narrow ass pointy-tipped shoe that fcks up your foot". Why the fck can't shoemakers make good shoes, good materials, *without* making them in the narrow "standard" shape modelled on a fckin fish.

    Altra hiking shoes (the lone peaks) are some of the best on the market. there's a reason they are by far the most popular for ultralight hikers and through hikers. if you want a traditional heavy and chonky boot, no they're not for you. but if you're seriously putting on miles and trying to move fast, they are amazing. THAT BEING SAID, the boots are absolute dogshit, some of the worst things ive ever put on my feet. which is weird because they seem like the same as the shoes just with a higher ankle. but no, something in the transition ruined them also fyi, your calf is not being "overextended" in a zero drop shoe, it is being properly extended. your calves are permanently being shortened in heeled shoes, no shit if you ask it to stretch to the correct lenght, your gonna have problems. but thats your problem, not the shoes problem.

  • @aurtisanminer2827
    @aurtisanminer2827Ай бұрын

    All the extra work your calves do makes the rest of your leg do less work. That’s why people get so worn out walking around in high heels. Their stride is like half the length of a flatter shoe. Your calves dont get tired but the rest of your leg gets twice as tired. I really dont think that argument was thought out very well. Also, someone with narrow feet is going to feel a ton of slop in these wide shoes but people with wide feet feel perfectly at home in them. Narrow feet would actually benefit from the women’s sizing. They are narrower than the mens sizing. And you get the option of having pink or purple shoes. You just cant lose!

    @@jeffhicks8428 altras are extremely wide shoes so there’s a good chance you’d fit them pretty well. That’s one of their signature designs to have a wide toe box. Topo also makes a really wide toe box and they last longer than altras. I have really wide feet, between 3e and 5e, and these shoes all feel great to me.

  • @stevenshorten6184
    @stevenshorten6184Ай бұрын

    1. If your feet are moving too much laterally, it's not a good fit for your feet. Get something narrower. 2. If Altras "don't work" going uphill, then drop shoes "don't work" going downhill because you're over-extending your stride, and thus, you're unstable.

    I’ve been wearing Altras since 2015 and have been with the regular Olympus for the past 3 years. I would consider these hiking shoes, not boots. But the shoes work pretty well. You’re right, the bottom could use some more rubber and there’s definitely some friction inside. Every time I bomb a hill, I feel like my feet are gonna catch on fire! And no offense, but mountains and steep trails exist on the East coast too. 😊

    I bought the regular low Olympus 5s, and took them to hike the Tour Du Mont Blanc last summer. The lining in the heel wore through long before I finished the week's long hike, and I had to start using moleskin on my heel to prevent my heel from getting eaten up for the rest of the hike. I've never had to do this with any shoe before, certainly not after such little use. Needless to say, I returned the shoes to the store right after the trip, and got a full refund. My old Altra Lone Peak 4s that I bought maybe 5 years ago now, they STILL hold up great in the heel. Altra have started to cut too many corners in their production in the last few years, all while hiking the prices way up. I love Altra for what they represent with the zero drop and the wide footbox. But these days, there are other alternatives that are much more durable. I think I might be done with Altra forever.

  • @jereldonovan834

    In my experience with Altra’s (lone peak/torin) its only the toes that have room, the mid foot and heal are quite secure. As for the calf, I’ve read that the lower the heel the more strain goes on your ankle and calf, but the higher the heel the more strain goes on your knees and back. It’s just what I’ve read in reference to heel height in footwear. To me they are great, but like most shoes they’re not for everybody.

    I had hiked for years in La Sportiva Wildcats and have loved them. A couple years back I decided to try out the Lone Peak without realizing they were zero drop heels. I quickly realized that my narrow feet (Brannock B) made the Lone Peak feel so incredibly unstable, that there was no way I could use them on a trail. The unstable feeling combined with trying to get used to zero drop made me retire them to around town wear when running errands. They feel like super comfy slippers, but for us with narrow feet, they just don't work for their intended purpose.

  • @vtxgenie1

    As some others mentioned, walking barefoot, true barefoot fully articulating shoes, or zero drop padded shoes in that order will build up your foot ankle and calf muscles and balance to where they should naturally be, then you can put on as bulky or heavy a piece of footwear as you want and get some different benefits from those as well. If you only wear high heeled shoes and boots you will cause problems over time, otherwise our feet would be made that way. Last, if your feet are "swimming" your footwear is too large and or wide and you need a different size, and since measured sizes don't match from one brand or line to another you might need another model or brand. People also tend to damage their feet when growing if they wear very narrow shoes, whether due to style or what they can afford, but shoes that fit a natural foot shape are kind of ugly but obviously more functional in nearly every circumstance. I still support your work, but this might be the farthest off you've been, you know better than to say a poor fit is due to a wide toebox, or to say there's no benefit to natural zero drop, and I like Altra but am saying this as someone who might never own this particular line of shoes.

I wore nothing but Vibram 5 Fingers for running up to 50k's but once I started going past 50k, I started wanting some cushioning so I went with the Superior 2.0, and then moved on to the Lone Peak 2.0, then 3.0. I was getting roughly 150-200 trail miles before they started falling apart. That was a pair of shoes every 6-8 weeks. I'm currently on Inov8 G270 and they are holding up well. Zero drop, durable build, and a tow box just wide enough for toe splay without feeling like a clown shoe.

    As for the comment on toes sliding, for people with wide feet, it is far more comfortable to have a wide toe box for hiking. Especially on the rock climbing trails. I am using a 4E boots because of that and the standard US cut cause my feet to hurt. It would be nice to see some comparison to the international brands like Montbell. As for feet sliding backwards and forwards, it is mostly countered by the shoe lace tension, and boa system makes regulating it a lot easier.

The same happens to another well-known brand's 'hiking' boot with similar glued-on traction lugs so maybe it's not entirely Altra's fault, but you'd think either Vibram or the shoe manufacturers would test for real world durability first.

I really want to find a boot that is going to last at least a year without causing physical damage to my body. I'm currently trying to recover from a torn hip flexor. Few years ago I tore my achilles tendons, each a year apart. I'm currently using Merrell because they are affordable and so far hasn't cause any injuries. If you could possibly include some testing for all day use, I would be much appreciative. Also if you would recommend a brand that I should invest in. I wear a women's 7-1/2 to 8. I usually gets 8 but in the summer it's in the 90's and my feet get hot with the extra socks. The winter in NorCal is rainy & muddy so I use a water resistant boot, which always ends with wet feet before the season ends.

    In 2017 I hiked 1000 miles on the pct with one pair of altra lone peaks, then 2 years later I bought a new pair and they were already wrecked after 100 miles on the Sierra high route. Their quality definitely dropped though they are my favorite hiking shoe

    I hope the new Timp Hiker’s will remedy these problems. I use my Olympus 5’s for almost everything outdoors. My only complaint is the scant outsole and they are a bit clunky. They definitely take max cushion to the max. I’ll try the Timp 5’s when my Olympus wear out but they really have held up well and it’s been about 2 years of solid use.

    I have a few thoughts. First feet sliding around in a shoe/boot hiking is not only annoying but dangerous in steep elevations. I have worn zero drop boots/shoes hiking and this makes my footing feel less than secure. That is not fun with drops over 1k feet. Second Altra shoes are AMAZING for the first month or two and wear out quickly. I like the idea and asthetic of the lone peaks but don't buy them anymore. Or buy them on clearance. If you look at the ReSupply section of REI a lot of people feel this way and return them.

    I ran my first marathon in an old pair of Altras they no longer make and that worked out fine. Since then, I could never wear their trail shoes since my feet trend on the narrow size and they're just too wide. I also don't get the whole obsession with drop, makes no difference to me.

    A few thoughts (I have worn Altra shoes for years now): 1. They are more of a high-top running shoe than a hiking "boot": I don't think there's any pretense of these being paratrooper boots. 2. Gore-Tex hiking boots are kinda silly for anything but day hikes (get something more breathable and wear gore-tex socks when you get wet) 3. After years of wearing Altras (and a few others), my forefoot has really spread-out: they fit comfortably without any swimming around

I am not a huge fan of the ultra vibrant patterns that many athletic shoe companies are gravitating towards.

    Speaking of zero drop. I used to wear my pair of LEMS boots all the time. I have adapted to the zero drop, wide toebox type of shoe. Now I have developed edema (swollen feet) and can no longer wear my LEMS. It seems that you cannot get really wide shoes withough going longer. Doesn't work. I have looked and looked and have not found a light boot made for us old folks. Would you consider trying to find a company that makes zero drop, wide toebox, very variable width for swollen feet in some kind of light boot? I cannot be the only one in your audience that has this trouble.

    After having Altras and Solomons, I’m never going back to leather boots, unless the world ends or something. A light, waterproof, cushioned boot that still lets you feel the terrain, yet protects you enough with a 30-40lb pack is just so far superior to heavy, inflexible, leather boots (unless the situation calls for it, ie ice climbing or something). I hiked the Laugavegar in my Altra Lone Peaks, and I’m never going back to a non-zero drop hiking boot. Sure, I’ll keep my Red Wings and Danners just cause, but honestly, they never get worn haha. I’ve had them for 3 years and have put hundreds of miles on them. No durability issue other than the waterproofing kind of “wore out” a bit near the seams.

    This brand owns the loyalty of the vast majority of thru hikers with the Lone Peak shoe. And let me tell ya, the PCT is REAL HIKING dude. You'll eat thru maybe 5 pairs but I dare ya to walk the length of the Western US in what you'd call a "real boot". You won't make it. I suspect Alt knows they own the space and this was an unsuccessful attempt at offering a boot vs shoe for the job. In the old days we did these hikes in Vasque or Kolfach waffle stompers and we were slow and hated ourselves by day 5. Ultra light changed the game and Alt, though not perfect is at the summit...see what I did there?

    I need to disagree with the foot slid thing. I use the Belleville mini Mil as an infantryman and I don't find that with a wide toe box at all. I find to have better grip on both up and down hills. I've gone through some nasty terrain with them and felt fine except 1 med size gravel that's with the mini vs the vivo tracker 2 is better in every way then both of these. That being said you are right that the Altra is a med to low hiking boot and I think it's a good transitional boot from traditional style boots to zero drop barefoot style. *Side note I only wear BF shoes and sandals except on my motorcycle. So I'm not the average person 😅

    I have timp gtx boots they aren't leather, the fit wasn't great on the leather ones but they are still gore-tex. They have been great for me out here in Arizona hiking the rim and in the superstitions (where boots come to die). I use a different insole with high arch support but once I got the shoes adjusted (they have little structure so lace adjustment is key) I haven't had any blisters or sliding in the shoe. They will wear out your calves until you get used to them and you won't be passing them on to your kids but the grip has been excellent in my experience(they wrap around rocks like aireddow tires). The wide toe box and fit of the shoe doesn't cut off circulation so my feet stay warmer in the cold, it also seems to have better floatation in sand/snow. I have timp 2s for wet and warmer weather, similar performance but not water proof and low top so gators are helpful in sand or brush. Mine have held up fine so far but altra seems to vary in quality (like a last boot made on Friday deal) as others have had them fall apart on them. So I get mine at REI so I can vet them with no hassle on return if needed. I won't say they are the best but they work well for me anyway.

    Not surprised at all by this vid. Altra’s quality and workmanship has always been hot garbage whenever I look at them in stores and having tried them on multiple times have deterred me from buying them to begin with. Gave in after seeing many glowing reviews about them and finally bought a pair of Lone Peaks. Never again after only wearing my first pair two times. The heel was all stretched out, foam felt dead and flat as a brand new pair of shoes. Cannot understand how they haven’t folded by now

    It really depends on your version of hiking. If on an established trail, wide toe box is acceptable. If off trail for something like hunting where you're stepping over blowdowns while side hilling or dealing with very rocky and technical terrain, a narrower and tighter boot will make sure your feet aren't sliding around inside the boot and giving you blisters. I live in barefoot footwear. When I'm hunting out west, I cram my feet into boots designed for the task.

    It's interesting to hear the negativity towards zero drop, barefoot, wide toe box boots for hiking. I have been eyeing the Jim Green barefoot African Ranger for hiking, but it sounds like that will be a bad idea. Maybe the barefoot African Ranger isn't meant for hiking, or maybe there are differences where zero drop, barefoot, wide toe box is fine with the barefoot African Ranger but a fatal flaw for these Altras. Maybe once broken in, the leather conforms to your shape to reduce sliding, but the calf issue would still be there.

    I think Zero-drop and wide-toebox doesn't work for rose anvil because his feet are not particularly wide. For people with wider feet, they would be fine for hiking, and I personally use barefoot shoes for hiking with great results. I had to send back my Barefoot rangers because they weren't wide enough for me (my pinky toes rubbed), so bear in mind what he says is targeted at people with normal sized feet.

    I love and hate Altra. I only wear lone peak mids. But they last me about 6 months. In my opinion they have made the best fitting and feeling boot for my feet but they are trash build quality and that is done on purpose so i keep buying them. I wish someone would make lone peak mids with real materials that at least last me a year or 2. im sure people get longer out of altras but I live on a volcanic island and there are alot of rocks. But I would prefer to pay more for a boot that lasts than need to keep replacing. I would 100% buy them if you made them!!! I did try the olympus but i find they have to much cushion and the sole is goofy wide and didnt like them.
