    Apple has a ridiculously long history of being popular with 'artsy' types, and bases a lot of their marketing around being focused on 'good, high quality design'. The last is complete bullshit marketing of course, but both appeal to one of the true constant of Hipster cultures: elitist perceived artistic merit. For the easier to use crack: Ehh... kind of. The Iphone/Ipad are certainly less complicated than what Android gives you, but the explanation falls flat once we start looking at the GUI on desktops/laptops/etc.

    If being a hipster is about avoiding the mainstream, the you become the mainstream, therefore since you are the mainstream you can't be hipster but since your avoid being hipster since it's mainstream , does that still make you a hipster?

    About two years ago, I went to an outdoor swing dance event in NYC. It's a scene rife with hipster trends, except everyone there definitely enjoys what they're wearing and doing. One man did catch my attention, though. He wore a straw WW1-era vintage hat, light pinstripe pants, a pastel plaid dress shirt and red suspenders. I asked him why he was at a dance event and not dancing, and he said, "If I sweat too much, it'll mess up the wax," as he re-twirled his handlebar mustache... And that was the day that I met the King of the Hipsters.

    I've always liked and liked to wear plaid shirts and jeans. That's just the way I've dressed for as long as I can remember. I also shop at Value Village for clothes, it's so much cheaper than going to a brand name shop and paying $20 for a shirt with a small bird in the corner. I grew up listening to the music that my dad played which is more indie/alternative rock and still listen to it. I wear glasses because I actually need them to see, not those stupid fake big black rimmed ones (the whole I wear glasses but they're fake thing is stupid). I don't see what the big deal is, why people feel the urge to call me "hipster" when I simply go with what I know.

    The Law of Hipster, and the Inverse Law of Punk: The more you worry about being a hipster, the more likely you are to be a hipster. And the more you care about being a punk, the less of a punk you really are. There is no such thing as counter-culture. There is only culture. Attempts to define something by it's negative are pointless. Just like what you like and don't give other people shit for liking what they like. Strive for excellence and openness, and leave it at that.

    Because 70% of the population are socially dependent extroverts. Hipsters are the people who feel like everyone else will respect them more if they act more independently, which is a paradox since changing for other people is an act of dependency. Also, it is a fallacy because of the fact that it is a trend, meaning it does not express independence at all. All in all you see a bunch of sad, weak minded people who have no idea what they are even thinking, caught in the paradox loop of culture-anticulture annihilation until they choke on craft colas and designer ipad cases. However, who said they weren't being themselves? That is exactly who they are: a confused person with a crippling addiction to social acceptance. Like most people. You see the exact same thing in all social cultures. People will let their clothes define them, and even worse, they will acquire clothes to change their definitions. And most of the time, it looks stupid. Chances are that anyone laughing at a hipster will look equally dumb from the outside. At least they got themselves a laugh, and simultaneously boosted their confidence, *and* the confidence of the hipster(hipsters love that shit. Makes their horses feel higher).

    Being a hipster is nothing to be proud of. You're just the type of person who wants to be cool by pretending you don't care about being cool. You're not cool nor are you counter culture. This trend is also something of the big cities. I can't imagine you not getting laughed at if you tried it where I live. If you really want to be part of a counter culture movement try Goth or something like that or just start doing your own thing and stick with it. Hipsters are just cool obsessed idiots and hipster culture is one of the worst cultures in America. There, I said it,

    Wait, hipsters have always meant fakers, pretenders and people who want to be hip and new for the sake of being better then other people, not because they like it. They never follow the latest trend, they follow whatever makes them feel better then other people. Back in the late 90's it wasn't popular to be, the jock, anymore it was more popular to be the individualists, be yourself. And those hipsters who followed what was popular like being a bully or being a nerd. Jumped on the bandwagon and tried to be individual even tho they have no idea how to be one because always following the trend. So now they are forced to be themselves which is impossible for them. So they just try to be different. Because being yourself was basically being different from the group and hipsters don't know how to be themselves. Hate how people try to figure out what a hipster is by hearsay and doing studies, and not trough experience.

    I'm not a hipster and I don't like hipsters. I don't like when people strive to be something they aren't (extremely colloquial statement). But even though I don't like hipsters, I have to admit that they are good at looking interesting. The hipster style is attractive and it sends the message of being laid back, approachable, and cool. It's just that the hipster style takes so much effort to accomplish that it's anything but chill. But just because someone looks like a hipster or dresses like a hipster, that doesn't mean that they are a hipster. The video says that you know a hipster when you see one, but that's just the dress-up; it doesn't man that that person doesn't dress differently on other days. This topic is complicated because I'm projecting myself into this study, but I know that a lot of people are simpler than me and if they look the part then they are the part, but there are bind to be countless outliers who don't fit that mold. This topic is difficult

    funny though. I thought hipsters just liked to set themselves apart from the crowd and not follow trends. I didnt know they actually bought clothes they dont like and force themselves to wear it. So in other words, you are saying " Who do they think they are! "? There isn't anything wrong with people that are trying to be something better than what they started ass, I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to be something different than what people think you are not either. I mean, who am I to Judge who someone is or stemming what someone aspires to be? If someone wants dress like a hipster, so be it. It doesn't offend or affront me. If I was to go up to that person and say "who do you think you are, dressing that way?" This is offensive!

    Doesn't your opening point to the basic flaw in these studies? If the idea of a "hipster" itself is subjective, how are they measuring anything related to "hipster" culture? It sounds more like they've randomly picked various subcultures and decided to make generalizations.

    I'm a hipster because I'm in the age group for looking hipster. I'm in my early 20s and male. Never in my life have I been able to grow facial hair and now that I can it makes me look a bit more masculine (that babyface). I'm just getting comfortable with the idea of looking presentable to professionals in my career. Naturally, I begin to buy better clothing than the usual band t shirt and cheap hand me downs I used to wear in high school. There can be many forms of a hipster. There are science hipsters, music hipsters, fashion hipsters, anime hipsters, movie hipsters, etc. They all contain their own subculture with their own fashion statements and codes.

There's also a bunch of people who listen to mainsteam which makes a fucking lot of people shudder.. I personally listen toooo.. anything that sounds good.. that just happens to not be mainsteam very often because all mainsteam is kind of bad to my personal taste.. and it all has a very similar feel and sound.. like you can tell it's mainsteam.. follows the formula for mainsteam music.. I don't care if the music I like is different or not.. as long as I enjoy listening to it.. for a lot of people they can't enjoy it if it's too popular though.. because they start thinking about all the other general population they fucking hate listening to it lol, puts you off a bit..

We can't even discuss this because you're an irrational fanatic. FYI: you realize your "case" is riddled with fallacies and simply loose facts and opinions? • @ArbitraryLifestyle

    George Cataloni I have been living in an apartment in Boulder, CO actually. Here, the LBGTQ community is reclaiming the words "gay" and "queer". You point out that people use the term "gay" to mean "stupid" a lot, and that is the point of my mentioning of "gay" not being interchangeable with "stupid". It's simply not. I am far from advocating PC, but I am an LBGTQ ally and will gladly stand up for equality. PC is not fake, it's a real pain in the ass IMO. Growing up (in Georgia) I used "gay" to mean all sorts of derogatory things, but I have woken up to how painful that is for people who identify as gay. It comes down to our own compassion for others-either you are compassionate or you aren't, and that really sheds a lot of light on how we treat others. In summary, I am an avid rock climber, but I do not live under one at the moment. The word "gay" simply means a sexual orientation to me; nothing negative or derogatory in any way. Annndddd I accept your point of view, as I've been there before myself. I can resonate entirely with your comment.

  • @georgecataloni4720

    ArbitraryLifestyle _Only_ sexual orientation?! Man, you DO live under a rock! Lol. Most likely you're just forgetting that the word gay used to, and still does, mean happy. Homosexuals adopted the word for themselves. Heck, black people adopted what is probably the worst word for them and made it nicer. Words have no inherent meaning, we people imbue them with meaning via our usage. If a gay person in your LGBT group is butthurt over a word, teach them this lesson; they'll be happier in this world.

  • @ArbitraryLifestyle

    @ArbitraryLifestyle

    9 жыл бұрын

    George Cataloni I'm not forgetting that it means "happy". That's the dictionary definition, which as you pointed out, "words have no inherent meaning" and we will imbue or own meanings unto them. Here in Boulder we have imbued the meaning of "gay" to mean a sexual orientation, similar to trans-male or gynesexual, etc. The community here is far beyond the days of getting butthurt over words. They're more concerned with having equality with the people who feel comfortable interchanging the word "gay" with "stupid". There is a WHOLE LOT MORE involved than words. We're talking about quality of life, equality in general, and many other basic human needs that are deprived to the LBGTQ community. Thoughts?

    Despite looking like what some would call a hipster, I definitely have never bought anything I hate. There's no subconscious convincing myself that I like something. People don't get that "acquired" taste exists outside of fancy alcohols. It applies to fashion, food, music and art. The appreciation of cheap beers is also an acquired taste, some are better than others depending what you like. Some people are afraid to try a style or a trend so they make fun of people who do adopt a trend. Who cares if the style will fade, its fun for the time being and people don't have to be such downers about those willing to experiment. Support each other, the same way you'd support a hockey player even if you're a soccer fan or the way you'd support your relative playing music even if you haven't listened to anything past whats on the radio and don't "get" what they're doing. Don't generalize a group of people and make assumptions on what they're like based on what they wear or what music they listen to or what their hobbies are.

  • @sicktoaster
    @sicktoaster7 жыл бұрын

    Hipsters hate what they're wearing but convince themselves they like it because they are "bucking the trend". So hipsters are rebelling against themselves? Too funny. I'm not a hipster, but I'm not anti-hipster either. I don't really care about clothes beyond saving money and wearing something that feels comfortable, and usually something plain, not something displaying a band name or a movie name or any of that stuff. And in having something dressy enough for formal occasions and job interviews. And the occasional souvenir that says I traveled to such and such a place. Whether clothing fits or bucks the trend isn't on my mind. If what I wear becomes the next hipster countercultural trend fine by me. If I become a hipster by coincidence then that is fine. If I don't that's fine too. I just don't care about these sorts of things, and I don't see why so many people do.

And just because someone wears a lot of plaid, glasses they don't need, has a fondness of coffee shops, and doesn't like most mainstream music or trends doesn't make them wannabe hipsters. I wear hipster/indie looking clothes, listen to mostlty alternative music, and not into a lot of "mainstream" things, drink too much black coffee, but I'm not trying to be a hipster, those are just the things I happen to like. And if it's now mainstream I'm fine with that. Not everyone that's into those kind of things are anti-mainstream, it's what we like! Hippsters are so envious and vain. They are all the time concerned with what everyone is going to think about them but all they do is just look... hipster, wich is basically mainstream. In short, they are nothing but posers. I do a lot of things that many hipsters state they do or things that they are so proud about but I dont think I have to change my appearance and show off, like "hey look at me, look how I think dif, someone gimme a Nobel". I have my own urban minifarm, I brew my beer, I have a car but I ride a bike (not a stupid fixie, a regular branded MTB) and I listen to some "weird music" but I dont grow a stupid beard, all my T-shirts are regular branded, my hair is as everyone else's and I wear as ordinary as possible, I'm never in need of attention and looks. Also, I like simple girls, no tattoos, no stupid pinup clothes or hair or glasses, no piercing, no posing and etc. I'm selfconfident enough to not need to trick myself telling "you're special, you think dif", which they need to do to themselves. Hipsters are the most mediocre kind people you're gonna see around. Do not try to look or think you're special, DO something special.

    My favorite hipster spotting story - I couldn't find my glasses one day, so I had my BCGs from basic training (look 'em up, they're hilarious). I met with a couple of friends who I always suspected, and they immediately told me they liked the glasses and wanted a pair for themselves. At that moment I knew... hipsters.

    I'm parcel hipster, I do it because I like how it looks and because it's easy to dress that way, I don't do it to be cool , trust me hipsters don't do it because they want to be cool. It's part of expressing ones self.

    There's this store in my town called People's Food Co-op, and it's an organic, all-natural, grocery store and restaurant. Originally, I didn't think much of it, but when I finally walked in and say they had weird stuff like, chakra balancing kits and took a look around, I realized how much of a hipster store it was.

    Market research has gotten so efficient that a subculture hardly even exists before it is ruined by aggressive marketing. Subcultures used to last a lot longer before becoming over-saturated, now it is so much easier to collect information on trends and then sell it back to us

    Is interesting how people are just looking for ways to say "You don't get me, I'm way off your comprehension " or "I'm not like others, my life is too complicated" or "I'm original". I know that we want to let know others that we are not all the same, but we really have a lot in common. So trying to say that no one is like you is just a waste of time, enjoy yourself in what ever sort of things you are into. I view hipsters as people that like a lot that fashion industry but don't want to "obey" the "rules". The problem here is that society always wants to put a label on it, so that's why you can see that they like to go towards the current even tho denying that mainstream doesn't take part on they're life. But indirectly being the main cause for them to be who they really are. People that just want to be different from the "conformist" and are open minded but support the "left" side because the "right" side is just too saturated "Mainstream".

  • @alphacause

    Striving to be a hipster, while born of an effort to be different, just causes the wanna be hipster to conform to another set of fashions, tastes, and interests that are outside of the mainstream. This causes them to congregate around others who share this need to be different, which will invariably lead to others within the same subculture mimicking each other. Thus you start to see similarities in appearance, tastes, and intellectual interest. The movement that started out as a rebellion against conformity, becomes conformist.

    Ok so just to be clear if you have a style, idea, belief, opinion or hobby that someone else decided to capitalize on, and you dont immediately change that characteristic about yourself your automatically being trendy or "a hipster" ? Also, how does what someone wears define who they are as human beings, idk, maybe i just dont live in a big enough city, but it just seems really trivial to me..

    I never really thought of my self as a hipster, I just kinda thought me was me but my one friend said that this girl on her bus said I was the O.G. Hipster (Original Hipster) which made me confused but also really happy and I wanna meet this girl cause I honestly had no clue she existed and for that matter even recognized my existence. I guess cause I do stereotypical things that are related to hipsters like I wear big sweaters because i'm don't have that great of a body, i'm not super over weight but sweaters hide that all. I have the big glasses cause i've needed glasses all my life, not my fault I cant see shit and I think I look bad without glasses and contacts hurt. I listen to a lot of indie music cause well I enjoy but then again i'm also a big kpop fan which contradicts the hipstery-ness. Im also an artist and plan to go to an art school but not all hipsters are artist sooo I don't know. I also don't go to Starbucks all the time generally cause I don't like coffee.

    For my 13th birthday I went rollerblading with my friends and I saw the most hipster couple on earth. He had slicked hair, a big waxed moustache, suspenders and just overall the same wardrobe as my great grampa. And she had circle John Lennon like glasses, long hair tied up with a bow and was wearing a dress that made her look like she should be in the sound of music. Not to mention that their rollerblades were probably the initial prototypes for the shoe. I will never forget the day I first saw full-out hipsters, for it will be scorched in my mind forever.

    Like I've never tried to be someone different than who I was, I literally just do things that I like, but many of those things are "hipster". I like hipster fashion but I like every type of fashion, I end up not having a fashion sense bc I can't choose between all the styles, which makes me look "hipster" I guess. Literally poetry and literature is my passion. It's not a "stupid trend" or a way to "look intelligent" people have loved it pretty much forever and it will never go away. I like coffee shops and Starbucks and shit, but who doesn't? I grow tired of songs after I hear them a few times and they play the same songs on the radio over and over so I listen to a broader and broader genre of music. I am vegan because I couldn't mentally handle not being a vegan. It's not because I "look cool" if anything I get shit for it. I don't care if my coffee is black or not as long as it has sugar. I try to use more reusable shit, I'd get an electric car if I could, because I don't want to kill the environment. I am a loner, but it's not to look cool or mysterious it's because I'm too scared to make friends. I talk/write strange often. I don't do it on purpose tho that's just how my words come out sometimes. I enjoy talking about "deep" shit or philosophy. I've enjoyed making my brain hurt since I was little. I don't really push it on others tho bc I know it comes off as pretentious. I love flannels and combat boots bc they're cute? Am I hipster? If so why would you hate me for it?

    I'm steampunk... but I do occasionally go a little hipster when I'm going casual. My steampunk clothes usually involve a waistcoat and my hand made jewellery (made out of old clocks and watches). It is hard to be casual steampunk as it gets less obviously steampunk but I enjoy the challenge!

    I got into a friendly "discussion" with a Hipster about Hipsters and I claimed that they were unoriginal pretentious conformist. He denied it so I pulled up some pictures of Beatniks from the 1950's - 60's..... and the Beatniks were identical to Hipsters from the glasses, to the facial hair, and right down to the skinny jeans. Needless to say that that was the end of the "discussion".
