    Cool overview and some additional knowledge, thanks Thorsten! A few years ago I bought one of your E39 vented shades which seems to have got a dent somehow. So it must have saved my lens. But I’ve really enjoyed using it. Due to the shape or the concept it makes setting the aperture on the lens a bit fiddly, although there is just enough space for my fingers behind the shade, but I still do not mind that since it is a part of the charm. Just like the advance lever on my M-A, or the fiddly-by-design focusing ring of the Summaron F/5.6. That lens also has a very special rectangular clip-/screw-on shade, very classic and unique. I kind of like varying lens shades and using yours is one more experience of using my lens, not just a pretty face :). It adds to the full experience. Hard to explain but you have to try. Due to the dent on mine though I should probably get another one :).

    Circular lenshoods regardless of make or design are at best a compromise and more often than not pretty useless. I am more infavour of a lenshood that has an opening proportional to the format of the camera. This takes some calculations to arrive at the dimensions of the aperture, but it is the most effective way of controlling stray light entering a lens. This also enables the lenshood to be so small as to be almost unobtrusive. Leica itself have some of this type of hood on tehir Q series of cameras.

    You just have a lens hood/shade fettish lol but I have to agree, the ventilated models look beautiful. She standard plastic square ones on the m lenses are the most ugliest on the market I think, the one on my summilux 35 I didn't even use for that reason. All the best Thorsten.

    Um, not to be critical, but it's "vented," not "ventilated." In English, "ventilated" means "to cause air to enter and circulate freely," which is not the purpose of a lens shade with holes in the sides. "Vented" means "having an opening or openings," which, as you described, applies to holes to decrease obstruction of the viewfinder.

    Looks nice,but has no function against the flair. There is no particular reason to be used then on range finder to avoid blocking the view finder and to protect front element against bumps.I use them on my Fujifilm X-pro's ,Contax G and Leica.

    Hi Thorsten do you make one for the 18mm Super Elmar?

  • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

    @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

    2 жыл бұрын

    I don't think any of the fits. The 18mm have outside filter to hold the Leica-made square lens shade, and hen a filter holder as the 18mm lens doesn't have a filter tread. I susped the 3514FLE shade would fit, but then the shade would be in the way as the 18mm is wider. So he short answer is no.

    They were designed for rangefinder cameras with wide angle lenses like Thorsten indicates. I was wondering why they were being used with SLRs and thought perhaps they had other uses or advantages. Besides perhaps being a little lighter there does not seem to be any other purpose than to be able to look through them.

  • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

    No reason for the ventilated feature, but the look great on some lenses. And they are metal and study, and generally much more compact than the larger plastic ones you get with SLR lenses.
