Why a closed shackle padlock is best.
Ғылым және технология
Generally speaking a closed shackle padlock is best compared to an open shackle equivalent. The bottom line is that crow bar attacks are the most common. Crowbars are cheap, silent and effective but if you restrict the gap between the padlock and the hasp you lock it to then a crowbar is defeated.

The last lock!! Put a pipe wrench on that bad boy! POP!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been using the Abus 20/70 on my storage unit and what I like is that with it's keyway cover on it looks pretty much just like every other discus lock out there, so it looks like nothing special is in my unit. I had an Abloy PL330 on there, but in addition to being an open 8mm shackle it's so nice looking and so high security compared to what's on neighbors units it makes it look like there's cool stuff my unit. Security through obscurity I think someone called it. So a big part of a padlock is where it is and what it "says", the 20/70 says "I'm just a disc lock" but it's really a disc detainer that tensions off a random disc so even "the pick Bosnian bill and I made" won't actually work if you do go in for the pick, meanwhile a big shiny Abus Rock says "I don't care if you have a ramset gun, I have money and probably spent some of it on cameras too". Security will always partly be about theatre.

Nice comment and good points!
TY. Never knew such existed.
I had to drill an Discus lock and it was very easy and made almost no noise. I would never buy one again.

It largely depends what you drilled. If it was a genuine Abus then drilling the keyway would not release the shackle. The Abus also contain a hardened plate under the outer stainless body.
Yea but you can get a pipe wrench on the disk lock and something is going to give. Hasp or lock.
Along the same line a pipe wrench applied to the body of padlock is a common method around my way.

That will bust open nearly every padlock made.
You could try a custom security pinned puck-lock.
Yes, we can't do anything to difficult it but nothing resists an angle or die grinder.
On the shackle put two big nuts to reduce the space for crowbar.

No padlock can stand up to the presence of a Cordless Angle Grinder Mighty Powerful Makita XAG13Z1 - 36 Volt Lithium battery powered steel cutter, armed with a high quality industrial grade 3M-7200 DAD-D (Diamond Abrasive Disc - "Diablo").
Unless you use a wrench and just grab the whole padlock.

That won't work with a diskus lock but it might still break the hasp.
You'll need 8 tons of pulling force to defeat the Abus 37rk/70 for instance. Good luck with that

RANT you’re quite right! I agree... perhaps I should have done it with a different open shackle lock! I did however say “unless it’s one of the best ones, it won’t hold”... and id call that Granit is “one of the best ones” :)

A lock is only as secure as the hasp it's attached to. Might take 8 tons to force the lock, but an average hasp will give out far before that 😂
Yeah cover the shackle is best . Some container padlocks just laugh at saws . Once we tried to cut open these extremely heavy duty one and nothing . Didn't scratch it
They don't have bolt cutters out there? Cause that's by far the most common attack out here. That or a hammer.
The round padlock can be open with the drill in 5 second.
His door has two holes. Use both holes with both kind of locks
Maybe the diferent kind of thieves use different ways . They don't use several different ways but use only one for each lock . A bike thief might more commonly use bolt cutters and a container thief might use another way to get through . Depending on how hard you make it for them and how much you spend . Niece's place padlock was cut with bolt cutters . Now bought her a disc lock that is a low priced but added nuts to shackle to protect it even more . Her door and the latch doesn't look verry tough at all .. though . Next way might be cordless grinding wheel cutters . if I was a thief and wanted to spend more that's what I would use . They go through a lot of things .
Smaller tool???
He looks like husband of sofia coppola frontman of phoenix
U can twist them off
Try a crowbar against an Abloy PL350 or ABUS 37/70. A crowbar will lose. But it's all about the weakest link. The diskus lock is not vulnerable to crowbars but has other vulnerabilities. I'd still take a higher security large shackle lock any day.

Yup. Lock picking lawyer has a video where he twists a disc lock with a pipe wrench and it's a very easy low skill attack.

@@Steven-gv1ke the locks that completely sheath the disc locks are definitely a step up and can't really be attacked except by lockpickers
Another lock expert showed how easy Discus locks are to pick so I guess I'd like a more challenging closed shackle padlock to combat crowbars AND lock pickers. Correct?

Completely depends on who made the cylinder. A lot of discus locks are Chinese rubbish and hence easy to pick. An Abus one is really not easy. And if in doubt they do a discus lock with a Plus Cylinder.

@@Nothingbutpadlocks Very unlikely thieves have the custom made tools & practiced skill to pick Plus/ Disk detainer locks. Just 2yrs ago LPL could not pick Abus plus locks but he can now.
Can’t I just grind down my crowbar end so it would pretty much fit it any hole but still be hard enough?
@modelsfirst

You could get a narrower long bar in of course but still very unlikely to break the Abus 90mm solid discus. Much more likely to break is a hasp it's locked to. Lock is only part of the equation.
thanks for the info m8, I didn't know that. I think granit has been picked, no need for crowbars and grinders.

Unless Lockpicking Lawyer is breaking into your house - that means nothing. Garden variety thieves are not lockpickers.

The ABUS core is only pickable with a very special tool which is unlikely to be carried by your thief. It is not pickable in the way a tumbler lock is picked. If you're worried about lock pickers (and you shouldn't be unless you have a cheap tumbler mechanism), buy an Abloy Protec PL350 or PL362.
I'm really boring, I'm sat up at 4:30am watching a video about padlocks. 😴
Try a shutter lock.... but not with this tiny latch!
crowbar are for novice a pros will go whit a pipe wrench
Skinny fellow with cute haircut would not have the strength to pry that ABUS open. He doesn't even want to try because he knows he would fail.
You know what??? From your appearance, I wouldn't think that watch belongs to you. YOu know what I mean and I am serious.
