Why 95% of you will FAIL to learn another language... and how to fix that
I talk about 10 reasons (plus a bonus one!) why many language learners fail to learn another language and achieve a high level of proficiency. I talk about how to solve these issues so you can ensure you're not "doomed" to giving up and failing to achieve your language goals.

*Selinker (1984) predicted that 95% of second language learners would never be able to attain a native-like command of a target language. Their paper focuses mostly on 'fossilisation'. A quick Google search will lead you to their papers and more research if you're curious to know more.

I teach using just one of many accents in the world. Please only learn it if you like it and if you are interested in learning it. I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Please LOVE and BE PROUD of your accent. After all, it is part of your identity and makes you unique. 💚

For an Asperger that I am: learning languages is like a therapy because it has transformed my life. But, I'm rather a self-taught as I left school when I was nine years old. In short, learning has saved me from going crazy.
I've been living in France for fourty years now and I've been learning French since my arrival here. Learning a language is like climbing a mountain: the higher we climb the more we encounter difficulties.

Thank you Emma for your valuable advice. Your tips are not only applicable to language learning but also to learning other things. You have motivated me because I love learning different things but they may not be useful in others' eyes. I learn just because I like it, but people always think that you should learn something that can help you to make money.
Thanks for the advices ! You are an amazing teacher.
Valuable hints. Staying motivated is key as well as starting right. To me learning English was like walking in a labyrinth of teachers e techniques. I had to step back several times and see what works for me.

Thanks for a lovely lesson, lovely Emma!! 😊🙂
Me encanta como hablas inglés!! Me ayuda escucharte. Simplemente escuchándote, aprendo un montón.
I’ve been listening to your podcast since you started it! I really enjoy your voice and accent, always glad to see you back with new topics! I’ve also been learning English for several years now, 6 I guess... This is endless journey, though this is the greatest part of learning! Wanna say thank you with love from Russia 💖 Love your hair style! 😄 I usually watch series in English, use coursebooks and have a study-buddy to practice conversational English, which turned out to be the best decision of the last year! Happy new year btw 🥳
Wow!! You are really the best teacher of all Emma. I can't imagine more logical and perfect teacher than you at all. Not only that, but also you are a good human being with a good heart. I don't know maximum of the British are as good as you or not, but I am going to like and respect your community hearing and seeing you. I am really thankful to you. Best wishes.❤
Thanks so much Emma.

Valuable video as everything You've uploaded. Thank you very much my awesome teacher 😘😘😘 Now I'd like to share what I did and what I'm still doing 1) Keep away any negative thought. 2) Set up goals but not ambitious goals. Just step y step 3) Have an schedule 4) Look for speaking parteners 5) Don't give up NO WAY! 6) Practice writing 7) Read a lot and loud out 8) Speak up 9) Training your ears PODCASTS 10) Duolingo this app has been working for me
❤ as usual excellent way to explain the things. Thank you Emma. I am learning a lot of things from you.. love you😂
Yeah, you are right. Because of not being mother tongue sometimes we can't express everything in another languages. But in the case of English it's completely different because this language can be mastered because of being an international language all can speak English more or less . But your consultation was also very much effective. But in view, to learn any kind of languages own avidity is much needed. Overall this video was so helpful as well as educational .Sometimes this kind of motivational video makes the lessons delicious....🙂🙂🙂💖💖💖
Fascinating topic Emma, For me my observation has always been that quitting is always an option for English native speakers. We have a comfort zone in the world that is hard to leave and it becomes difficult to put yourself in positions where you are the only English native speaker in the room.

Yessss, so true!! And it's also so easy for us to "give in" when people switch to English around us. Living here in Spain now, I encounter a few waiters and people who speak to me in England and I FLAT OUT REFUSE to back down and speak English back to them 🤣 Then it just ends up being a weird conversation where they refuse to speak Spanish and I refuse to speak English.

I can understand every sentences you spoke in this video. But when I watch an American movie or drama, it is 10 times more difficult to understand. I keep encountering advanced-level vocabulary when I read newspapers. It is endless journey. So, mastering English as 2nd language is as difficult as becoming a doctor or lawyer for me. I admire your passion for languages.

Hi Emma, I love learning a new language like Arabic and Spanish. As you said I have to study hard to learn them Emma. I want to improve my British English from you Emma. You can teach English so well. I only love native British English rather than other English accents in the world
I love your teaching methodology
I'm doing an experiment right now. I learn about 5 hours of English every day and I'm excited to see what I'll achieve in a year. I can speak German very well and some Spanish. There is a lot of vocabulary that occurs in both languages. The hardest thing about English is pronunciation. When I read something, I understand very well, but I can't pronounce it. That means I have to check almost every new word in the lexicon. That's not fun.

Good afternoon Emma. I am Paul from Italy. First at all, thanks for your job. I am following you on your youtube channel. You are a good teacher and a kind girl. I am 37 years old. I studied English until the age of 14, then I stopped, but a few months ago I decided to improve my english skills. I am doing exercises with duolingo, I am watching english video on youtube, I am reading articles in English, but I need to speak much more. Could you advice me some free english speakink clubs on internet? Thank you in advance and have a good evening!

hello EMMA your talk is interesting don't consume a lot of content to learn I'm RICHARD and I'm French people result I don't have ENGLISH teacher what I do to improve my English skill I listen to KZread and it's more easy for me to listen to you than AMERICAN you pronounce English word very well it's nice to understand.AMERICAN seems to be like ANDALOUS. I don't recommend people who want to learn SPANISH to go toward ANDALUSIA is not a good idea they speak like American . I learned Spanish hearing my parents. now my goal it's to improve my English skill. when I was teenager I listened to ENGLISH GROUP such DEEP PURPLE and RAINBOW . And my dream it's to practice more output but it isn't easy in France I don't find English people . I like to speak Spanish too . At home with my son and his wife we speak Spanish each others .Emma you're beautiful accent . I don't know where are you coming from ?. to help me to continue I take no so more serious my learning English language. because it's true I'm French and to speak like you isn t possible. Even when I go to Spain people see I'm not native speakers but the main purpose it's to comunicate that all. if you learn something and you think to the top .I think you surrender and is not wise .thank you to share with you my opinion.
