    @@gbulmerIf you make it so MPs go to prison for lying to parliament, you make it so they won’t say anything at all. There is a reason why parliamentary privilege exists. • @gbulmer

    @gbulmer

    17 күн бұрын

    @@HALLish-jl5mo Thank you for replying. Misleading Parliament is already an offence. MPs are *NOT* free from all restrictions on their speech while in parliament. Members of Parliament do not have license to say anything without consequence. I am not asking to change that. I am only asking the punishment to be more significant than sacking, and resignation not be protection against punishment. The effects of misleading Parliament by a member of the government can be enormous. Parliament's legislation effects millions of peoples lives. It is sometimes more profound than any civilian lies could be. Lying is, for example, a foundation of fraud. Government fraud might enable £billions of tax payers money to be wasted, or given to fraudsters, and never be recovered. Resignation should not be an adequate defence. Punishment should still be possible. The punishment for lying to parliament needs to have proportionate consequences. If someone is baited into claiming the price of beer in one of Parliament's bars has gone up by 5p, but that isn't true, then the consequences might be minimal, nothing more than acknowledge they were wrong. I'd expect an appeal to the speaker would be enough to minimise 'baiting' in Parliament. If you don't believe in that, I am open to suggestions on how to curtail attempts to cause someone to lie. Punishment for a member of government should be more significant than an MP because they wield more power. Punishment for a member of a shadow cabinet should be more significant than an ordinary MP. Also, the US Constitution's First Amendment protects free speech. However, that does not give the freedom to lie without consequence. There is still the balancing protection of 'Defamation', which can have significant financial consequences. AFAICT, the US does not suffer from significant 'baiting' people to lie, even though the financial benefits may be significant. Best Wishes. ☮

    This is quite easy. Suppose a total of 15k people voted for some MP. When an issue is up for voting, those 15k people would be naturally divided on what is the best vote. Also, an MP does not only represent those who actually voted for them but also represent those who did not vote for them, hence the divide could be even more pronounced. The party, therefore, can whip MPs to vote whichever way based on political or ideological considerations and argue that voting for a member of that party sort of means agreeing with that party's agenda. This is especially true if the way to vote has a "mandate" i.e. related to some election promise.

Also to note, 3 of the Tories (out of 20) and 3 of Labour (out of 12) left out of choice, as well as 1 out of the 3 SNP MPs.
