Why 35mm is perfect for photography in Japan

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I started this journey with way too much camera gear, and in the end it was my smallest and lightest prime lens that gave me most of the joy. Join me for a short visit to Japan and a chat about why 35mm is such a marvellous focal length for this wonderful country.
If you would like to know more about joining us for the “Curating Japan” photographic workshop in 2025 with Heritage Expeditions, take a closer look on my website here:

A huge thanks to the team at @HeritageExpeditions who made this journey possible for me and our workshop group. I’m really lucky to have had the chance to travel with them so often over the past few decades. They’re a small company based in New Zealand, and have a track record of putting together quality adventures to remote locations with superb guides and crew. Can recommend!
Thanks also to Panasonic Australia for the loan of their Lumix S9 and the marvellous F1.8 series of prime lenses. If you want to know more about my I love this little camera, have a look at my recent video that delves into my custom setup for the S9:

Absolutely lovely photos. I always think if I want to take 35mm or 50mm out. I don't want to take both but 35mm is so good for just roaming the streets.

Not to mention the gears in Japan are so much cheaper than Australia at the moment. Planning to pick up a S35mm f1.8 there during my upcoming trip!

It's a cracking good lens that S35 F1.8! I love the second hand market in Japan too. They're so organised, so professional and some great stores to walk into with almost any lens you might want.

Beautiful work, Ewen. I love the Japanese intentional design philosophy - especially with architecture, furniture, and the like.

@@EwenBell Indeed. My wife is Chinese, but her manerisms can often be very Japanese-like.

You have some really nice images there. I also did a trip to Japan in Jan. I took my S1r and the Sigma 24-70 and 20F1.4. I used the 20 for interiors and landscapes. For street photography I mostly used the 24-70 but reviewing my final keepers I find that I was mostly shooting in the 28-40 range or all the way out at 70. 35 is kind of the sweet spot for street for sure but having something longer is beneficial occasionally.

I'll have to wait until they make an F2 24-70 though, I shoot most stuff at F2 :)

They should be marked in the video, at the top left of frame. Sometimes I forget to put all the camera id into the final edit. The telephoto shots of the birds were G9II, all others were S9 :) Thanks for stopping by to watch the video.
