Nobody complained. A reporter looked into the permit in an attempt to trace the owner but found out there was no permit. The4 machine continued to operate for a few more years until it started malfunctioning. It tells you all of that in the video

I assume the haunted soda machine had its ghostly power cord plugged into the locksmith’s outlet. This is obvious nonsense - at best, an innovative marketing scheme. Well played, locksmith.

It wouldn't be too hard to run this off a couple of leisure batteries, which could be swapped out every now and then for recharging. Nowadays a few photovoltaic panels would provide trickle charge direct to the batteries. I run a pond pump off a couple that probably requires more power than this coke machine.

There was another machine like that in another city in Washington state. It was right out front of a coke bottling facility and had dented cans for 25 cents each and multiple mystery buttons.

My local Coca-Cola Bottling Plant used to have a machine in front of their office door, available to the public. It also had nothing but Mystery Flavor options, but the machine was actually used by the plant to sell damaged products; random cans that were perfectly drinkable, but maybe fell and dented during packaging, etc.. and at 15 cents per can, it was definitely worth whatever popped out. I think there was a complaint at some point and they took the machine down, but I miss popping a nickel and dime into the machine and getting something I might not have gotten otherwise.

@@bensoncheung2801 probably more along the lines of people complaining that they spend 15 cents on a bottle that was broken so much that they couldn't open it or it was empty. which isn't exactly a smart idea to complain about if it didn't happen too frequently - like imagine only every 4th can being unusable or empty/leaking, you'd still go out with a huge win in beverage. Some people just complain about everything honestly.

@@bensoncheung2801 It's illegal and unsafe to sell dented canned foods actually. When you have a severe dent, the sharp edges on the crease can cause a tiny hole to form, then air enters the can, causing botulism bacteria to grow and somebody who eats it dies. Grocery stores and restaurants regularly get cited by the health inspector for dented cans. Could be something similar with the health department.

We had a mystery vending machine where I used to live. We didn't have many selections from other countries.

1:55 - Squirt isn't discontinued. It may be a little harder to find than most other soda brands, but it's fairly widely available (typically distributed in conjunction with other Keurig-Dr. Pepper brands such as 7up, RC, Sunkist, Canada Dry, and A&W). Likewise with the Sunkist Cherry Limeade.

IIRC companies that retire brands always keep a tiny batch of them for sale to preserve the trademark. I remember hearing about a small independent store in NYC that sold all this stuff. That said I wouldn’t be surprised if what was in the cans of old soda wasn’t the same stuff. Hard to believe they’d keep the ingredients and dedicate a bottling/canning run for a disused product.

A friend bought a used Pepsi machine for fun and put it next to his front door. He stocked it and set it to dispense fairly cheaply. Strangers noticed it and kept using it at all hours!

1:56 Squirt is not discontinued, it became regional. It was pulled back to its region of origin, the Rust Belt. Mainly Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and Indiana.

Squirt is still available all over the place here in Seattle where that mystery soda machine was, so I'm not sure why anybody is saying it's discontinued. As far as I know, it has just always been difficult or impossible to find in certain parts of the country.

I said the same thing. I live in PA and there has never been a time in my 30+ years of life when I couldn't find it in the stores here.

Working in Seattle i use to take friends there all the time who were visiting from out of town. I don't drink soda but it was still fun getting the retro soda. I was sad when it vanished.

A normal soda machine is basically a glorified fridge, and it takes a fair bit of electricity to feed it, especially on days when it's baking in the sun. That means it has to plug in like a fridge, and I don't think too many people would be okay with some random vending machine jacking their electricity without their consent. If it was indeed serving "ice cold drinks" as you say, it must have been doing so with the consent of the business whose electricity it was using. The mechanism could have been rigged to run off a car battery or something, but that could only serve ambient temperature drinks.

This sounds like an SCP...

In college I lived a couple blocks from this machine. I didn’t realize it had such lore until it was missing one day. I was just sad I couldn’t get my random sodas anymore. From what I heard, it was owned by the locksmith. Somewhere in town they had a storage unit with a bunch of retro sodas they used to restock it.

Those mystery selections aren't something new if you go to the main Coca-Cola distribution center in some places in America they actually do have the vending machines in the car park set up with mystery selections

My best guess is that the owners were sea travelers who had a residency around the Seattle area. It would explain how overseas drinks ended up in it.

I work in logistics, and we do beverages.... I can get you a whole pallet of squirt for a few hundred...... Who told you it was discontinued? Maybe the supplier didn't make enough off the product, or it received not the best reviews in your area, and therefore, the middleman passed on the contract renewal.....

I've been to this machine in 2017 while visiting Seattle. Found it on Atlas Obscura. Can't remember what flavor I got and all the buttons were labeled Mystery.
