I'm a foreigner living in Korea and it's really hurtful to see how they treat each other sometimes, there is a lack of compassion, even to us foreigners, they only talk to us when there is something they want from us and then bye and it's the same between them, when they don't have the status they had, they cut all contact, why? That person was your "friend" how can you just disconnect emotionally that easy?... I understand competition and hardwork and all that, but the lack of compassion to a fellow human being is wow, out of this world, I lived in other asian countries and there is nothing like SK, they have the new rich syndrome, where everything that matters is pretnding, all the time. Guys, relax a bit, life is hard enough, we don't need to make it harder ourselves, give yourself and others a chance! They don't ask for help from others, because simply you don't know who can you trust and then the hurt ego on the top, it's hard. The harsh way they treat their celebs online is just the tip of the iceberg to how this society behave between themselves, it's a beautiful country and culture, don't allow fakeness to make it ugly.

Unfortunately traditional Asians even here in da states (Chinese, Koreans, Hong kongers, Vietnamese) cares 2 much about the money to da point they idolize it. They don't enjoy life at all just saving money. So it's like they have a lot, but they only enjoy adding more. 😅😅 once they perish, it goes to their kids who enjoy it by spending some of it 😅. Young, middle aged, or the boomers. Death has no bias towards age. 😮 Everyone should think about where she/he goes after this life. 😅 Don't wait until the end comes, and death swoops down for you. Have u ever thought about whether u go to heaven or hell after this life? Look at how many peeps die each day...but there's real hope... There's a way to not suffer, not be in danger, not be poor, not get hurt, not have to work in vain, not have to feel any kind of negative vibe, & not to be disrespected anymore by anyone. Imagine you will be invincible, immortal, and holy with a new, upgraded body. Imagine everyone around you will be the same as you without ranking/hierarchy. Isn't that a delightful thought? It's true you or anyone can have eternal life. All you got to do is to accept Jesus Christ 🙏 as your Savior! Once you do, He will let you into heaven during your day when you finally see Him! God does like you. You have to reach out to Him by prayers 🙏 ❤️ ♥️. Let Him know your issues 🙏 He is listening to you.

It is not the society that kill these people, it is our inherent weakness and the lie we built up around these weaknesses that kill what is left of an already bad being. Changing our nature learn compassion, understanding through conscious decisions are what make our lives better, not trying to buy sth (with money of course) in our lives without regard to everything else. Slowly but surely these Asian nations will have to face the collapse of human value and human society. A terrible end for such enduring nations who have been pawns of the West for many decades, after all it is a combination of many elements, high population and few resources and the idea that they can live a life like rich european colonizers, and an inherent delusion of human beings

I am chinese (grewup in Canada), during my childhood my parents put a lot of pressure on us to succeed. I had a successful engineer career and I married another engineer. Our son was diagnosed autistic when he was 3. Very mild and he goes to normal school and do very good. My husband and I changed our job to have less stress and more time for him. All we wish is health and happiness for him. I refuse to perpetuate the asian stigma, my son is not my social card to show success. My western education help me a lot to not care about what other people think and be more conscious about individual needs. My son has a lot of friends and as a mother, his smile and joy to live are inestimable.

I'm half Vietnamese / Maori and I live in Australia with my Vietnamese family. The aunties would always compare us kids and our cousins with how well they did in school or what they're studying etc. My mum was Maori, and shes like "it's always a competition with your Vietnamese family son. Don't feel pressured, just do your best, do what you enjoy and as long as we're all here (5 kids) then that's all that matters." It's a strong mentality amongst Asians. Even my brother in law is work work work. He's got 2 houses, a business, all the toys / nice trucks etc, but he's the most angriest person lol, he lost all his hair... My brother in law is 28 years old. I am 37 years old and no word of a lie, he looks older than me... I will raise my kids to do well, but I'll also let them know I love them no matter what and my house will always be open with no judgement.

Most exams are trash and won’t impact your ability to make money. It is better to work hard on relevant skills in order to score a good job or earn income. However, in some Asian countries, having a diploma is important and you must pass these exams to obtain paper certificates. So, it is important to do your best to pass them. Remember, failing these exams is common and should not discourage you.

The societal pressure is too high since childhood until adulthood. - Getting good grade (no rest, no dating...) - Getting into a good university - Getting a good paying job - Getting married at certain age - Having children before 40 - Must follow trend, brands... The society need to accept that THE YOUTH have an harder time to achieve all of those things. Some may succeed but not all. Those people will isolate themselves to not burden others and not to be seen as failures.

You need to have a "RELATIONSHIP" with JESUS NOT "RELIGION" TO GET INTO HEAVEN. Religion don't get you in heaven. Nicodemus in the BIBLE was religious it's the same today lots of people are religious "talk the talk" but don't "walk the walk" JESUS told Nicodemus he had to be BORN AGAIN(SAVED) to get into HEAVEN ST.OHN 3:3. Read about the Apostle Paul conversion by the HOLY SPIRIT on the road to Damascus this is the epitome of real christianity, the life that the disciples lived that JESUS CHRIST is talking about and unless a man is BORN AGAIN he will not enter HEAVEN and so this is why we want to teach children early the difference between religion and a true relationship with JESUS CHRIST. So this is also my witness to you "you must be BORN AGAIN(SAVED) if you want to enter HEAVEN and not HELL. PRAYING FOR ALL KOREAN PEOPLE.I THINK YOU ALL ARE BEAUTIUL PEOPLE.

That is more of a way of thinking imo. Because I think in the end people who experience those thoughts, it is not about the place they are put in or the experiences they go through eventually they will express those "depression" feelings no matter what. I am european the same age as you living in the EU. I never lacked anything from the start yet my ambition for life grew weaker day by day. I realized that it's all pointless. Existance itself is meaningless. That is why from now on I'll live my life doing whatever is fun for me and will stop worrying so much about studying/social pressure. Take care and only try to do WHATEVER makes you happy without worrying about what people might think about you. :)

I’m a Korean who grew up in the west and still live in the west. I grew up in a typical immigrant family where parents had to work very hard to provide us children with ‘better lives’. One thing I can confirm about Korean culture is the toxic nature. I’m not sure if the Korean War is to blame or was it always like this (according to Korean period dramas apparently so?) but after studying psychology I’ve come to understand a bit more about why so many Koreans are the way they are. There have been few studies done over the years that shows ASD is quite prevalent amongst Koreans (far higher than western average), only until recently Koreans virtually did not mix with other races or cultures (at one point they hit 99% ‘pure blood’ title) which is not great for the gene pool. Maybe this has had a big impact on their psyche and mindset but whatever it is it’s affecting people’s behaviours. I’ve always wondered why so many older Koreans are so angry and very negative and ill tempered. So many Korean boomers gaslit their children by using ‘filial piety’ as a reason for their poor behaviour as parents. I actually don’t have many fond memories of my own parents. I’ve grown up resenting them over the years for their emotional abuse and sometimes physical abuse. And yet they constantly remind us how lucky we are that they’ve raised us with a roof over our heads and that we didn’t grow up in a broken home (despite the shouting match everyday). I cannot help but compare my own family to my western friends’ families where the parents genuinely loved their children with no strings attached. For us, often we felt like we were born because they felt obligated to have children because of society’s expectations rather than the real desire to spread love. We had to do well at school in order to give something boast about but they have no real interest in what our desires are or what we’re really good at. I left home at 18 to go live in London and I learned by forging my own life, and I’m so glad that I did as I was only able to breathe life after moving away from my parents. I needed a lot of therapy to get this far but it was all worth it as now I can think straight. I’m now a parent to a beautiful mixed baby and I’m working really hard to make sure not to repeat the same mistakes my parents have made. Too many Korean parents don’t offer real love to their kids, these kids grow up with a misconceived view of what love and affection really is. You cannot offer love/kindness if you’ve never received it. The first formative years of your life is the most important but this is often done wrong in my culture (one of the reasons why I’m not a fan of joriwon). Unfortunately, they’re the by-product of their environment and they genuinely don’t know it’s wrong. If you’ve spent your whole life only knowing one thing that’s all you’re going to know. And most don’t have the courage nor the curiosity to break the mould out of fear. It’s sad that too many don’t understand the meaning of life and real happiness. I pray that this will change in the future 🙏

I’m a chinese living in Canada. I used to know a girl of Korean ethnicity from school, who speaks perfect mandarin and Korean, and is from a big Chinese city (shenyang, the capital of liaoning province). She took the entrance exam in Korean though (allowed in china for minorities), and she told us that her parents demanded her to marry to a man of Korean ethnicity (regardless of the citizenship) in the future. That was over 20 years ago and we lost touch after I came to Canada, but I still remember that conversation somehow.

I kinda relate with the woman who cut off her contact with friends because there was a time when all of my close friends had graduated when I was still working on the finals. I shied away from them and so were they, but turned out exchanging simple words meant a lot. Of course I was embarrassed because I was the only one left behind, but turned out they also experienced confusion because they wanted to help me graduate but they just didn't know what to do and they had things on their own hands, those things hindered our relationship for a small period of time. So I began to swallow my pride and asked them for any input they could gave me, asked for their company to the campus for encouragement (it helped a lot with my nervousness), and sometimes they took me along to see the life after graduation so I got prepared better than they were. So, my message to the ones who feel left behind, try to reach out even if it's bitter. Try to think of alternatives if you feel stuck in the same place but at the same time keep trying your best and live your best life! 🎉

I had all my friends tell to my face that they didn't want to hear my problems because they were busy in college and private lives. I listened to their problems before, but I guess they wouldn't do the same. I cut them all off, and nobody cared. I won't be surprised if I end up like the people in this documentary someday. This is reality. If you get left out, most of the time, people will move on without you. They won't wait for you. Can't blame them, they have their own lives to live. As you grow older and become more isolated, finding friends who are similar to you gets harder that you won't even bother anymore.

One of my friend's cousins once visited south korea and told me the harsh truth about the society and the people living there. Keeping the racism aside, the a part of the people around there lack on sympathy, socialize and compassion towards each other. And at first I thought it's only Japan to have lonely deaths but after watching this I felt I am wrong. Personally I think Depression and mental illnesses are nowadays a global problem. Loneliness and Depression are prevalent in every country in the world; but it's especially true in places like the Far East. In Korea the people who become shut-ins and ultimately die alone are known as "Godoksa" (as shown in the video) and in Japan they are known as "Kodokushi." Something has to be done to try and rectify this situation as it is a public health crisis and government officials in both Seoul and Tokyo need to get their heads together and work to get this under control.

They gone need to have a "RELATIONSHIP" with JESUS NOT "RELIGION" TO GET INTO HEAVEN.

The root of depression is lack of support and not able to share what. are you feeling with someone. Parents should understand what their kids going through . They are the biggest support . If they are with you then it doesn't matter what the world say about you . My parents encourage me to move on when I face any failure . For my graduation I moved to other place but still my mom call me daily and my father twice a week , they know I am introvert and its hard hard to express myself. How can parents not find out when their kids are not being their usual self .

From what I’ve seen and experienced living in an Asian family is hard. Kids can’t openly tell their parents about their true feelings. We keep it inside because many of us never experienced that kind of connection with our parents. Even if you tell your parents they most likely will ignore it. Mental illnesses isn’t view as an actually illness in many Asian families. Even siblings can ignore your feelings. I’ve had my brother tell me “you’re lying about your depression’. After he told me that I refused to speak about my feelings from then on.

We all need to have a "RELATIONSHIP" with JESUS NOT "RELIGION" TO GET INTO HEAVEN.

This is so sad. I’d watched a similar doc about lonely deaths in Japan, but they weren’t so young. All these poor lads dying in their 20s and 30s…. I also really felt for that poor girl who failed her exam by 1%. She should not be sat alone at her desk for 15 hours everyday. That is insane. So physically and mentally unhealthy. I hope she changes her lifestyle….and that poor man living in a tiny room, no light, no friends, eating crappy tub food..I sincerely hope he finds his way out too……god I had no idea S Korea was so tough….. I do get it; the isolation. I moved for a job that didn’t work out, to an area where I only know the guys at the gym and my Co-workers in my part time job. But I have no actual friends here, and if it weren’t for the gym and job, I shudder to think how I’d be feeling. For any other lonely souls out there- try to join a social group (I’m working on doing this myself) just to do something that isn’t just going to work & coming home. It’ll give you more of a social life and give a chance at friendships.

This is a bitter pill to swallow and it's not only happening in Korea. People don't care. We post social media to fool everyone into thinking we're okay when we're not. We don't check up on others. What truly hurts is the assumption everyone is doing well. Also few people know how to validate another person's feelings. "Negative positivity" is real. For example if someone says they feel sad and cry all the time and you tell them to cheer up or others have it worse than you. Wtf? We live in a society that shames you for any feeling that's not slapstick happiness!!! We're lonely and want to speak our truth. Those poor people in the apartments. If only someone knocked on their door unannounced and took them out for a walk or coffee. They needed someone to care. I'm 100% alone in life and fear being found in my apartment months after I die. Please care about each other more. Please. ❤❤❤

I feel so sorry for the young girl that did not pass her exam by 1 point. Please don't give up! keep striving forward and you will pass. I was in that situation where all my friends graduated from university. I lost all contact with them and to be honest spiraled into severe depression. But I think this is where my experience differs from those poor South Korean individuals that decided to commit suicide or are experiencing depression. If I was born and raised in South Korea, I think I would have committed suicide in 2014. The crucial difference is the cultural value and support-system of FAMILY. I come from the Pacific where family ties are strong, we openly speak about our problems with our elders or it is mostly our parents and grandparents that sit us down and we talk about our problems. Even siblings and senior members of our families correct and encourage us even in our darkest times. What I am trying to get across is, please maintain or establish communication with family members or friends who are willing to listen and talk with you. Be open and form friendship that make you smile, laugh, happy and encourage you. 💖

I used to live in a oneroom alone and just go to my university… it was only when one of my colleagues who isn’t Korean noticed how distant I became .. he said u need to visit a counselor or therapist and talk it out ! At that time I became homeless because of heavy rain that happened in 2022 And even my one room was totally ruined ! I talked to the counselor for a little bit .. and she suggested that I should find a tworoom or a sharehouse and not to live alone ! Now I have been leaving since December in a sharehouse and though my flat mates mind their own business… having someone around prevented me from the unthinkable! I once caught myself thinking about ending everything like why should I be hurting like this .. then I just remembered my family why should I allow myself to end my suffering but cause it to them … I am trying my best everyday… I just want to say there is always hope !

I was preparing for my exams far from home but after few months I could really feel depressed and living in that small apartment with an introvert roommate who was usually in someone else's room was more devastating. Being an extrovert everything around was killing me from inside. I was not even studying, just watching reels to avoid my loneliness. But then one day, I suddenly called my mom and asked her to take me home. My parents understood my situation and the next day I was at my home and I am preparing for my exams from home only. I do not regret even a bit that I left the place because I feel lively now. I really want to make studies a part of my life not my whole life. I just want to say that, I know we all asians have that societal pressure to be the best but just try once to make yourself and your parents understand the way you REALLY want to LIVE!!!❤. Your life is only yours and you must be the only one to take decisions for yourself but always be connected with your family, they are your backbone ❤ It may happen that my friends being there perform well and I may not, but the thing is that I will try my best as much as possible.

There is no such thing as "dropping your pride" in depression, it has already gone, and many feel worthless. This is why they self-isolate, seeing themselves as a burden. The depressed person eventually becomes numb inside and stops caring about anything as they no longer find joy in anything (anhedonia). They become depersonalized from self and others. This may lead to derealization. All worth looking up for the uneducated before making rash comments like "drop your pride". I am not trying to be mean to you, your response had compassion, but this is an oft made mistake by family or friends. Another unhelpful comment is "pull yourself together", if they could, they would. Depression is exhausting for the person and their helpers.

I think these sad cases of isolated death will even increase but not only in Korea. The problem is, unfortunately it becomes easy for people to avoid true social connections due to the possibilities of the internet. Many young people decide to spend their weekends at home, scrolling on their phones. Social Media creates the illusion of comfort and "connection" when in fact they are just sitting alone at home, watching others living their lives. It creates the illusion that we don't need each other. The longer they avoid socialising and real encounters with people, the harder it gets for them to cope with a healthy daily life. There is a rise of young lonely people and we all know that loneliness can kill.

I agree with you to a certain extent. This is part of the problem, but I believe that the other part of the problem is that we don't know certain things about ourselves as we didn't really take the time to understand our physique. So usually people who want more alone time have issues with social skills they didn't develop during their younger years because they had a different pattern of growing up than most of the people. As these things which they didn't learn at a young age are more needed at older age, they get depressed as they use more energy for the same social interaction compared to others. Life is build for those who are the average next to that those youngsters who get sick are usually in the age range where our metabolism changes and actually need to increase our pure energy intake (more bio, more sustainable, our vitamin and minerals intake should come more from natural resources rather than chemically achieved pills etc...).
