I admire her for having such great control over her class. I was a preschool teacher for a decade and having 20 five year olds in a class was SUPER hard for me. I know how horrible school can be when little to no control is in the classroom. This teacher has the students FULL attention. We see that when they say "yes yes" every time she says "class class". And the fact that they all repeat the rules out loud with ensure that they have an easier time following them. I loved the alphabet song they sang. I can see the children ARE having fun, they get to dance, sing, and chant. They get to talk and use their bodies the entire duration of this video.

This is my 2nd year teaching kindergarten. Your video has been a helpful tool. I've already applied much of what I've seen. I do find that including choral responses and the repetition keeps more of my students fully engaged in the lesson.

Every thing has a sound or an action or a movement, there is repetition, but the children are engaged at all times. These routines brings order and discipline, it is targeting all of the different types of learners such as audio, kinetic, visual etc! Wonderful!

This is a fantastic method for classroom management as well as pedagogy. The 30 second micro lessons have made a huge difference for my students learning.

After the truck driver cheer, they do HANDS and EYES--this is when all attention is focused on the teacher. Hands folded in lap, eyes focused on teacher. I went to the Power Teaching Seminar recently and it was wonderful!!!

I had the privilege of meeting Andrea at the National Whole Brain Teaching Conference this week. She is so charismatic and ready to help the rest of us. I have never enjoyed teaching like I did last year using WBT for the first time. The children love it and it is so positive. Having fun learning involves the emotional part of the brain and helps put things into long term memory faster. The gestures help the many motor learners. Class/yes and Teach/OK are ingenius!

For auditory learners they will learn better listening to themselves speak, it also helps a child who gets distracted easily to concentrate on their lesson as they can hear their lesson. the phone they are using is mostly used in speech therapy so children can hear any mistakes they are making in speech. It may seem crazy but it is an amazing teaching tool.

NO,its not hypnotizing. i totally understand where she is going. the kids are focused. mind you this is only part of the day. im sure they have play time during the day. i love how they go to their seats chanting seat, seat, seat. it helps them focus on the task. most kids will detour going to the seat and try to do something else. GREAT JOB TEACHER!

Thanks for posting this! I tried this after I watched a couple of whole brain videos and my students LOVED it. I will study the method more now and use it more often. I also teach kindergarten and the total engagement is perfect - especially for my ESL students who need LOTS of practice! Ignore the naysayers - they obviously aren't teachers. (or are terrible teachers who are stuck on old fashion let's-lecture-and-bore-the-children style teaching) Great job!

Great teaching technique!! As a K. teacher, I can assure you this is NOT hypnotizing. It is difficult to engage 20, 5-6 year-olds at one time, for more than 10 mins. It is important for children to do and be interacting in order to actually be learning. These children are learning when responding to the teacher and each other. Partner talk is important, like when the students teach each other. I am very impressed by this well-designed lesson, allowing for active learning and tons of fun!

Engaging Kindy children is so important. They need to be involved in their learning and their attention span is short. The one or two children who are not engaged take up all the teacher's time and nobody ends up learning. I love WBT.

Also read Harry Wong's "The First Days of School" for some insight into the importance of procedures in classroom management. Clear consistent procedures, like reciting the rules and the procedure the kids use to move from the carpet to their tables decrease the amount of discipline problems in the classroom because a lot of discipline problems arise when kids don't know what they're supposed to be doing. This is true for kinder all the way through twelve.

I do think this is "one" great of teaching. The students can not get distracted! They are focused the whole time, and not day-dreaming... Plus kids love repetition... This looks almost exactly like my kid's tae kwon do class (except obviously they are learning something different). All the gesturing, answer and response. They love it, they learn better this way at that age. I thought it was going to be too much for him, but structured like this, he can handle it just fine. So much answer and response sounds horrible to us grown ups, but it shoves a ton of repetition into a short amount of time.

Repetitiously annoying (for an Adult) but all together wonderful! best kindergarten teacher I have seen, these kids are having fun and learning tons at the same time! wish there were more teachers like this around!!! I am a homeschooling mom of 5 who uses as much fun and repetition as I can find. Found this video while looking up interactive learning songs for my preschooler and kindergartner. This is definately not hypnotizing. If you are a kinder teacher or teacher in general, classroom management is pretty darn hard. How would you go about having 25 plus children to be engage, learn and have fun? This technique is one that I find very powerful. I would love to have my daughter be in this class. Just a glimse of your class tells me that you are a wonderful teacher. I can only imagine what the rest of the day is like. GREAT JOB!

I am curious as to what the hand actions were for the alphabet sound rap (Who let the A out - a, a,a, a)? Did you make them up yourself or do they go with the whole brain teaching?

@RaoYiLan My experience of my extremely independent and capable year ones has been somewhat frustrating as their efforts have been, usually, focussed in a contest against each other. They cannot organise a classroom. I watched and waited but no surprise, it wasnt happening. My professional responsibility is to focus their capacities and join them into a cohesive learning team. My first experiences with these techniques are promising and fruitful.

I love whole brain teaching! I used to do it when I taught older kids. But a few questions, how many hours are these kids in school? I feel that a lot of the in between chants and transitioning takes up alot of time. Also, how can this be applied with preschool? A lot of it might be too much for them. I do have a very consistent routine with arrival work, small groups and everything in between, but I still feel my kiddos are too small for this! :(

Do you use it? I think I would love to use it! I am interested in starting it this year, but I do not have proper training on it. I think I have the gist of it, and think that their website has videos on how to teach it. But, I've seen several now. What did you do before teaching with this technique?

What music did you use for the alphafriend's chant?

As much as I, as a kindergarten teacher myself, watch whole brain class examples, much of it to me still seems like military-style rote. HOWEVER, one can completely see that it works. I am in a class this year that, no matter how many years' experience with inner-city children, and however many years' working with behavioral kids, I for some reason have not been able to get a handle on this class. It has only been a week! However, I feel like I am already losing the battle. I think behaviors get worse each year. So, I am going to implement some of these ideas. For example, when I call my students to their table, for example ,table 1, I am going to insist they say 'table 1 sitting' as they sit. I also am going to implement the 'hands and eyes' phrase. I have always gotten my students' attention by doing 5 claps, then students respond by clapping 5 times themselves. NO. Not this class. I am going to go through the rules this way, and maybe implement your rules. They seem more effective. After years of using the same rules, which were highly effective, I am going to use these rules. I am not so into my own teaching philosophies that I don't know when it's time to change up some things. So thank you. :)

This all looks amazing but I cant see it working for my class of 31 children. The majority do not speak English as a home language and have a very limited English vocab.

@Coolguyus123 I don't think the children are hypnotized here, as you can see the teacher is gentle and affirming, not coercive, controlling or manipulating. There is indeed order here, but it is natural and although there's obvious choreography having taken place previously, and recitation of "rules," they are of basic, respectful ethics, and the spirit of the children is lifted up, naturally engaged with creative, interacting song and movement, and is just plain wholesome and healthy.

Carpet time keeps concepts fresh on the mind. Young children= young brains. Stop reviewing the "1st grade" material your daughter knows &the proverbial "cobwebs" would set in. For example, some teachers use the beginning of school to review old material bc the summer erases some previously learned info. This is not a representation of a school day-just carpet time. See the artwork hanging up in the background? I'm sure this teacher had other TEACHERS in mind when she posted this video-we get it

I assume you are refering to Bloom's TAxonomy with your "higher order" comment. However, rote learning precedes the synthesis of new knowledge and experiences. A cheesy phonics Song in K can give a child the tools she needs to write a beautiful poem or short story later on in life. There are basics that must be learned and anyone worth his or her salt in education knows that young children need routine. If they were not having fun in this class, you would NOT see this amount of participation.

You need to take a look at Bloom's Taxonomy. If kids don't master the basic levels of "remembering" and "understanding" they won't be able to get to higher order thinking. Also when I taught kinder they LOVED doing whole group recitations like this. If I forgot the rules, they'd always remind me. Very young children love chanting together and doing gestures, that is fun for them. They also find repetition and routine comforting, especially if they are coming from a chaotic home environment.
