Whoever Controls the Media, the Images, Controls the Culture | Min Kim | TEDxLehighU

How does Media change your perception of culture? Nowadays, because of social media the way we look at an image and receive a piece of information have changed.
Min is a Lehigh student ('16, '17G) who studied Sociology and Entrepreneurship as a member of the Eckardt Scholars Program. His senior thesis-as presented at the 2015 Eastern Sociological Society Conference in NYC-explores the effects of representations of race in pop culture through the lens of the hip-hop and basketball industries. Min will be working at Red Bull in Santa Monica, CA starting mid-July, where he will be envisioning and executing brand campaigns around music and culture. Min graduated from Lehigh in 2016 with departmental and university honors, and is now pursuing a number of self-directed projects at the intersection of media, business, and culture through the Presidential Scholarship. Min is also known for his passion for music and DJing, and performs regularly under his the alias 'minnit'.

Nothing is more painful than trying to explain to people they are brainwashed or being brainwashed by the media when you are one of the only rare human beings that didn't watch TV, movies for 15 years after waking up from a 2 year coma.

Cultural context is not just about political echo chambers. Changing media "representation" patterns, for example, can change what we think or feel we have to think of ourselves and others. Changing media discourse kills and creates conflicting identities all the time. And the faster we change our discourse, the more anxious and angry people we get at each others' throats.

Go play a digital game like WoW for example and go read their EULA. Almost certainly says if you intentionally or not exploit their game you are likely to be banned permanently. You best not exploit if you want to play. Meanwhile the harvest your data and find EVERY POSSIBLE WAY to exploit you and turn you into a mindless zombie. The only way for society to really get ahead is if each individual was a moderately successful Corporation.

Being afraid is what has allowed us to survive for so long, it naturally results in people taking action to reduce threats... no matter how likely or unlikely. mar504 Making decisions out of fear is not wise and someone cunning will take advantage of that fear. I’ve searched the question and criminologists are still baffled by it. One theory is that millennials are literally so insecure that as an age group they don’t participate in crime because they don’t like risk. Another theory is the lower consumption lead contaminated water. Even video games have been thought to be reducing violent crime because kids can just play GTA for an hour instead of actually robbing the seven/eleven. Who knows? :/

Heres the one thing hes missing: entertainment is still very important. At the end of the day we need entertainment because life has no sense of purpose outside of raising a family in our day and age and even then having a child is a very big risk from government intervention. It's not just entertainment is bad, it's that whoever controls entertainment controls how people feel. If every single thing that comes is a cheap atomized remake then the majority of people watching it will feel cheap and atomized.

@@neilfoster883 The first mistake you made was bringing up media: media is only a small protion of entertainment as literature, music, fine arts, and even gladiator fights of old have played a big part before it ever existed. Yes it is very important because theres no such thing as a human who goes to work and does nothing else afterward. Anyone who thinks that is describing Frankenstein much less an actual human.

I dare anyone to find a real physical address for Home Advisor it doesn't exist. No physical address exists that way you can't sue Home Advisor when you get scammed. A multi-billion-dollar criminal crime ring right before our eyes with no sign on the front door or in front of the business anywhere in America. Home Advisor advertised in all 50 states in America and over 200 professions they operate scams in. No signage for Home Advisor in the six countries they operate in. And everybody mostly has heard of Home Advisor they advertise on radio TV and internet big time. One of Google's biggest clients is Home Advisor. Google protects the criminal crime ring Home Advisor. And don't believe all the excellent reviews with a lot of companies online they're made up of course you will not find a real reviews with phone numbers for companies that mostly doesn't exist either. HomeAdvisor is the same company as Nelnet student loans in Lincolnton Nebraska with a lot of fake reviews. Don't believe it call up Nelnet student loans they want your social security number. And people will give Nelnet student loans their social security number and personal valuable information not knowing they're giving their information to a huge criminal crime ring Network. How do I know this Nelnet - HomeAdvisor told me it's the same company. If you like this comment give it a thumbs up. If you don't believe it I challenge you to look into it you'll be enlightened.

Most of our knowledge (is it 80%?) is semantic, meaning we learned it from others. (Whether we talk to parents, friends, watch the media, etc.) We can only learn so much by ourselves. I think it's okay to watch media if we remember no media is objective. (It's not possible) Later, we can say " I don't know everything since I watch my own news, so let's learn from others." We can learn from them simply by listening to them. They have their own experiences that shaped them as a person, which they can share but our favorite media often can't. (It seems like that at least) Now, we're also learning about those experiences we didn't know (from different people). I.e. Remember we don't know everything and that's okay. I'm doubting my idea a little. Is it only an impossible dream that I could be more open to other ideas? U.S. politics feels very divisive right now, so if I vote, I have no choice but to pick only one side. It's like I have to agree to all the ideas of one side even if I don't, since I have to cast a single vote in an election. I'm sure it would help with awkward conversations, and it would make it easier to remember we're all in this together. I don't think it's bad to watch media personally, even if it feels very negative sometimes. It shares knowledge we couldn't have learned otherwise: what's going on in our community and the outside world. I make sure to read good news too.
