The Bottom Line
================================================================================
WHOA. In the real world, Sigma delivers a 35/1.4 in Sony FE or Leica L mount with image quality most of us will be hard pressed to distinguish from the mighty, almost six times the price Leica APO Summicron SL 35mm f/2. But am I selling my own APO Summicron? NO WAY. :) Buy: geni.us/UznrgoB

    Sigma and the L-mount was the reason I bought a used SL. I could not afford or justified all the Leica glass, no matter how much I love them. What Sigma delivers is outstanding.

    Well I did hear that the newest version of the Sigma fpL finally has phase detect auto focus. Combined wit its 45mp sensor. Might be good as well. Although I've also heard it could use a firmware update or two to get it up to par with sony or Canon. But at least it's a good start

    I don't do video, and I don't know how good the S5's AF is, so I really can't comment on whether it's the best L-mount camera for video tracking. My SL2-S doesn't officially have eye autofocus yet, but in the studio portrait sessions I have done recently, the camera has unerring found the subjects' pupils. I absolutely adore the SL2-S! And the Apo-Summicron 90 mm SL...oh baby! The Sigma looks excellent. However, 35mm is not a focal length I favour but seeing your street portraits may cause me to change my mind on that.

    When I went to Sony a few years back i loved to sigma art primes and have been very happy. Debating about the new Sony compacts G’s coming out or the Sigma contemporary lenses. Rough choice but reviews like this doesn’t make it easier!

    Lenses are incredible these days and Panasonic and Sigma are outstanding. Canon is still selling their 50/1.8 that is cheap, yes, but the LUMIX 50/1.8 is about five times as good for less than twice the price-and weather sealed. The Sigma 24-70/2.8 DG DN is top drawer and affordable. Thanks for this peek at the 35.

    Excellent. Seems to be an Leica issue (PDAF), as others have no issue with AF on Sony cameras. At any rate fixing AF is not a problem and I would expect a firmware will fix it. How is the manual focus for video?

    Hello, I Have recently bought a Leica SL Typ601 second hand and it was a impulse buy. The only regret I have is that I will probably never going to be able to buy a Leica lens for it as I live in NZ and the SL lenses starts at $8000 NZD I have bought 2 Sigma lenses for it. The 85mm DG DN and the 24-70 DG DN. Seeing how much you like Sigma I feel reassured that it was a good purchase. Thank you for all your videos. They are very informative and helpful. Thank you!

    I have this lens in Canon mount from a while ago, went to the camera shop every Friday to put some of my paycheck towards it. It has paid for itself so many times over now, it is on my camera for about 90% of the time when I'm shooting weddings and has such a gorgeous look wide-open. Fantastic lens and for the price it really is very hard to beat.

    Love your vids. Always. Slightly disagree with your talking head at 1.4 statement. In a two camera interview shoot, I find 35mm wide open like that can be a beautiful wide interview angle, paired with an 85 for the punch in. If the subject isn’t at your level of closeness shown here. More like a waist up shot.

    You should've started with the back focus issues... that's not a small thing. I've had and sold every sigma lens I've ever bought. I've never kept on long term - they're too inconsistent with autofocusing. I'll stick with Panasonic glass and the one Leica lens that I couldn't live without.

    Told by a press photographer a simple truth - Sigma glass is great - BUT WILL ALWAYS LET YOU DOWN - at some point. I've used masses of glass - my only problems - sticky blades on 30 + year old Nikon AI-S glass and a much more modern Sigma zoom that died ....learned my lesson that day.

    Most Japanese optics have an uneven division of sharpness from centre to the edges; real quality optics, like Leica and Zeiss, have a much more even division of sharpness, where there is hardly a difference to be seen between the centre and the margins.

    I can’t say vs. the GM, because Sony hasn’t been able to get one to me. It would be helpful if you could share two real world, high quality images with which we could compare. Though I’d dare say that my own actual test against the APO; my own real world experience; and the price differential are sufficient to leave me comfortable with what I said.

    @@3BMEP Generally speaking all modern lenses are good and of course some are exceptional, even cheap modern lenses. I think people were mostly let down by the size and weight of that new lens. Many were expecting some upgrades to mobility and compactness as it has been designed specifically for mirrorless.
