I think there are a number of reasons but you can just sum it up as self concept issues. The person in a relationship thinking it's too good to be true, the one pursuing someone thinking they're too good for them, someone thinking everyone cheats...etc I think most of the time instead of fulfilling ourselves and giving that relationship to ourselves within we'd rather spend time yearning after someone. Yearning for something can be quite addictive. Humans love romanticizing what we see as 'unattainable' instead of actually doing something about it.

Do t be dumb, that’s just an expression, hearts can’t really break. If anything, they just go thru a process to have more self love, (which is love for the one and all).
