WHO Were The Spirits In Prison That Jesus PREACHED To?

Baptism is important because it is a sign; it's as though when you go down below the water and come out, you are mimicking this journey of Jesus. But early church tradition also linked baptism to a denunciation of the dark powers, in the baptismal formulas. Because their idea was Jesus goes down there, he preaches to the spirits in prison, and Peter hints that those spirits are not the dead humans. They are the Watchers from the book of Enoch. Check it out!

It’s so crazy you said that Mr. Heiser, because it’s exactly how I felt in my water baptism! I’m an ex Muslim, now YESHUA follower. I remember the day I got baptized in January of 2012. It was literally as you said: I went under the water and I felt like I was being buried, going to be buried, then when I came up, I came back to a new life. AMEN! My first thought as well. As I've been studying the word the last few years with a much more focused intent on reading what is ACTUALLY written, and not extrapolate all kinds of meaning out of it or reinterpret the words to mean what I've been told they REALLY mean. I have grown more and more weary of all this doctrine floating around out there that has little to no backing in scripture. I think a lot of it has to do with how many services each church feels the need to have. I went to this church years ago, where there was adult Sunday School, Sunday Morning Service, Sunday Evening Service AND Wednesday Night Service. That's FOUR Sermons a WEEK the pastor had to come up with. How do you have any time to actually live your life, to gain some life experience to then come up with a sermon to talk about it, when you basically have to come up with a new sermon 4 of the 5 work days! LOL So no wonder pastors have become "experts" at extrapolating all kinds of "hidden" meaning in scripture to try to come up with something news 4 TIMES A WEEK! And THAT'S on the plain scriptures, let alone the puzzling ones like this chapter.

He said: *"Unless we put medical freedom into the Constitution the time will come when medicine will organize itself into an undercover dictatorship. To restrict the art of healing to doctors and deny equal privileges to others will constitute the Bastille of medical science. All such laws are un-American and despotic.".* Now, after the year 2000, we are very much facing this reality, as we live in an era where our medical freedom is increasingly under attack, and "healing" has been replaced with "treating" ‘diseases’ with toxic chemicals and surgery. This drug-driven medical paradigm not only depends on the sacrifice and, some might say, torture, of animals in medical research, but also in many ways uses humans as sacrificial lambs.

@@incorectulpolitic Your reply is seems to be trying to answer two things at once. rockymntdan1 simply said the Bible never says to pray for salvation, which is correct despite your attempt to contradict him. The medical stuff is a red herring so we'll work around it. Half of your passages are Old Testament. I'm assuming that means you don't actually understand the significance that makes to your argument. Think of the the Testaments as contracts. We did not get an amended contract, if we had, the Bible would be about a hundred times more confusing and might actually take a law degree to understand. (Because with an amended contract, the original is 100% binding except where the newer version is contradictory in which case(s) the new is accepted.) Hebrews chapters 8 and 9 make it abundantly clear that the old contract, in its entirety was erased and the new contract is all inclusive, making interpretations fast and easy. Literally, out with the old, in with the new. Does that mean adultery is legal since the ten commandments are no longer binding? No, all it means is, if you want to know the answer to that question, you don't go to Exodus 20 or Deuteronomy 5 to get it. You could try I Corinthians 6, though. The other half are not dealing with salvation and when they are, you only got half the context which only gave you half an answer. Everyone loves John 3: 16, but they miss the fact that Jesus is talking about being baptized when He said it. John 3: 1-6 is the beginning of the conversation that led to the statements made in 16ff. You also missed that Jesus was raised up like the serpent in the wilderness in verse 14. If you were bit by the serpent, you had to find and look upon the brazen serpent to live. Did you have to believe in the brazen serpent? Sure you did, but that belief required action. Jesus said, that He would be raised up in the same way. You read the words, but missed their meaning. Peter said, baptism now saves you, and books have been written to try to change what he said. It won't work, the scriptures are plain and simple. Jesus did the hard part, but you have to do your part as well. Read Romans 6. You won't find a single passage that says pray for salvation. The passages like I John 3: 9 are written to people who have already been baptized. John wrote to saints. We are given the same answer that Naaman was in II Kings 5. Wash and be clean. Sadly, many people have same reaction that Naaman did, minus the obedience to the command.

For example, psalm 82 as the stepping off point. He is clarifying the Scriptures in such a way that the depth of my understanding has improved dramatically. I have been a Christian for many years. I have never been satisfied with the commentaries on Psalm 82 they just did not seem to make sense in regard to what the Scriptures actually said. Now it is crystal clear to me what is going on in that psalm. Now he’s doing the same thing with 1Peter 14 through 22. Thank you Dr. Heiser. I’m very grateful.

Everything he tries to teach is totally wrong. He is not a Christian, he is a man of the Godless world and the God hating worlds false manmade religion of scientism. One is either of God or of the Godless world. MH is a man of the Godless world it is just that simple. The men of the Godless world cannot understand the word of God and their interpretation of it and teaching of it is an entirely different religion. This is the case for the entire church. The entire church is of the Godless world, it is not of God. The churches real religion is the God hating worlds false manmade religion of scientism and scientism's counterfeit christianity. Ultimately, nothing MH teaches is Biblically correct, and if anyone cannot clearly see that it is because they like him remain spiritually blinded by God. Anything he does state correctly is then mixed with a bunch of leaven ruining the entire batch, just like all the churches false preachers/teachers. All false teachers say something that is correct, but then teach the rest all wrong, and lead everyone totally astray. The link to the correct teaching that exposes how fake MH is, is called the Bible and we can all have access to one. But one must first be made spiritually alive by Jesus to be able to understand the Bible. The unsaved cannot understand the word of God, only those that belong to Jesus can.

@@tonybasoni8443 Wow. Sounds like you’re thoroughly familiar with his work and ministry. Are you aware of whether or not he has accountability in his life or whether he considers himself above correction? I’m not. Let me tell you where I come from: This video showed up in my newsfeed. Not sure why or how. I can’t vouch for everything he teaches. That’s it, plain and simple. Is this a Scientology channel? If so not good. Is this a leavened channel? What I mean is hypocrisy. Leavened is often associated with obedience but it should actually be associated with hypocrisy. Does he teach one thing but does something other? I know I’ve asked a few things. But what I’m really trying to figure out is whether or not you have some insight into the “spirits in prison” doctrine that Peter brought out in his writing? Maybe a teaching of your own on this subject or a link of a teaching on this particular subject. I’m still not seeing where you think he is wrong on this subject. I’m well aware that scripture is the final authority on what we must conclude with. You attempt to affirm something and the spirit of God, the Helper, will affirm it. Agreed. No better link than that. Agreed. Now we don’t have the book of Enoch in our canon... the WHY is for another discussion... so it most certainly seems we must be incredibly careful we don’t shape our theology from extrabiblical books... but what we do know is that Enoch was quoted. So, Your thoughts on that and the subject of “spirits in prison” mentioned in the Bible. Or maybe you’re not taking issue with this particular subject but rather everything he discusses? I don’t know. Or you taking aim on his whole ministry? It seems you are. You know, I just learned two days about the Ravi Zacharia sex scandal. I used to listen him years ago as a young believer. It made my stomach sick to think that Satan effectively got ahold of him. Was he unsaved? Was he saved? Did God finish His work in him? I don’t know. His work and ministry was meaningful to a whole lot of people. His scandal, if true, disappointed a whole lot of people. At the very least it reminds us that none of us, regardless of how popular or how unpopular, we are still human and we all seem dimly. I was born into a catholic home, baptized as a baby, grew up Protestant, and now I’m taking my faith into my own hands. In other words I’m not letting anyone shape my theology. I let the spirit holy and the Bible do the teaching. So, with all due respect, I’m not so sure that your warning really amounts to anything with real substance. There are so many people calling out other people as false teachers. That really doesn’t impress me. Christ was called a false teacher. So was Paul. What makes your warning different? Do you have a rebuttal to this “spirit in prison” teaching? What’s your view on this subject. Maybe we can start from there. But if you’re just here to slander without backing up your words with scripture... with actual scripture that brings to light what Peter was trying to communicate... then I’ll not be a part of that. Seems your passionate about this subject and I think you must have some insight that greatly disagrees with what was said in this video. I’m willing to give it a read or a listen.

Scientism is the 100% antigod/antibible belief in the100% fake manmade hoaxes such as evolution, dinosaurs, a universe, the age of the earth and fake universe, and the spinning ball (baal) earth. Believing in any of these things makes a belief in the Bible 100% null and void. It is all a belief system, a religion. One cannot believe in two completely opposite things. One cannot believe that the earth is stationary and flat as the Bible clearly tells us it is, and also believe it is a spinning ball flying through endless space. These ideas are two opposing religions. This is serving two masters, and that is not possible to do. As the Bible tells us, those that do this (the entire church) will love one and hate the other. The fact is, the entire church loves the world and its 100% fake spinning baal earth, (scientism) and hates God and the truth of his word (actual Christianity). MH is pretending to teach christianity, as are all the churches phony teachers/pastors/preachers, but the truth is they are selling the worlds false religion of scientism. I listened in shock when my children were ready to be baptized that we had to be members of their church for a year or that baptism was not important for Christians ( Rightly Divided ). I have been bingeing on all your videos. To actually find someone that makes sense feels like my prayers have been answered. I've been struggling for awhile. I was raised up Jehovah's Witness but realized when I was an older teen that something wasn't right there. I still don't celebrate most holidays and it was a couple years ago when trying out different churches that I first heard that Christian's believed Jesus was Yahweh. Obviously with my upbringing I thought that was impossible, but then there was a logic to it that I couldn't shake either. So I've been searching. Your thorough studies, the vocab you cover, scriptures you dissect, have finally helped me accept the truth. It is by far the most beautiful truth I'll ever learn. My question to you Dr. Heiser is if you think baptism has to be done by an actual pastor? I can't find a church I actually enjoy being part of with the fact most of them feel like a joke and I especially dislike christmas time.

Any disciple of Christ can baptize you, no earthly credentials of "pastor" needed, but you really do need to find a Church to attend and most denominations require baptism into their congregation. It's an initiation of sorts. Don't confuse this with your salvation though. It is Christ that baptizes with the Holy Spirit, which is indeed His seal. I believe it's important to join ourselves with other believers and worship collectively for many reasons, but the most important reason is because scripture teaches that we should. You will not find a Church that you agree with on 100% of things and that's ok, so long as basic requirements are met and discussion allowed. We are meant to discuss the scriptures with each other and correct each other in love. There are things, like the current video, that don't really matter in the grand scheme of things and it's ok to agree to disagree. Those types of disagreements should not produce division or ill will within a Church. If it does, maybe that's not the best Church to be in. I wish you well in your walk with the Lord, and pray you find a church family to be a part of. God bless.

Ya my problem with making this about 'The Watchers' is the Greek usage of the word 'Pneuma' or 'spirits' which throughout Biblical texts only refers to humans created in the image of God whom He breathed the Pneuma or the breath of life into. It seems to me that Peter is referring to the humans who were killed in the flood after being preached to about a coming judgement. I think its likely that the celestial beings who were imprisoned there also heard the proclamation Jesus made concerning His own coming Resurrection but I dont think Peter in that passage is thinking of them because hes speaking in parallels all throughout those passages. He wants people who were alive then to identify with those who were alive at the time of the flood.

Whats sad in our churches today is the dismissal of baptism and communion as being only symbolic and memorial. When these 2 sacraments offer so much more to the Christian. And Dr Heiser just explained another aspect of it so well. Also, take communion believing a real work of God is taking place, and asking Him if there's more to it. You'll be amazed.

You used correct words, Sacraments! Through Sacraments, God communicates, to a believer, His Infinite merits and Graces. They are given only through the hands of His ministers, priests, ordained in His One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church. Baptism given by protestant pastors are not a Sacrament, thus it is not valid. People, who follow false teachings of protestant churches, believe that they are baptized. But in reality, they are not and still carries a dead soul without the Sanctifying Grace. Our Lord founded His Church on the Apostles (Rev 21:14) with St. Peter as His Vicar (Pope) on earth, vesting him with His Authority by giving him the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven (Matt 16:18-19), and sent them to teach to OBSERVE ALL He Commanded for salvation of souls until the end of the world (Matt 28:20). And Our Lord said, "Whoever believes your teaching and is baptized will be saved, and whoever does not believe will be condemned (Mark 16:16)." To be saved, therefore, they MUST come to His Only Church, Only Fold (John 10:16), so that they may hear His Voice, truly know and follow Him, and be saved by Him (John 10:27-28). Amen!

Baptism is more than a “symbol.” Otherwise, its necessity in the message of the Gospel would not have been so persistent. It is an initiation, yes, but it also marks, seals and empowers the new believer. As such, it shouldn’t be showcased in special meetings scheduled infrequently. It needs to be administered a.s.a.p., like a shield given to someone under fire, because he will be.

The pastor could have just read the scripture and said I'm not sure what this means but let's pray for wisdom. Better to admit you don't know the answer. This is the most convoluted explanation I have ever heard. One of the reasons this couldn't be more off-base is the fact that Dr. Mike uses Enoch as the type and Peter very clearly used Noah as the type. This passage is so simple, I don't even understand why people think they need a doctor to explain it. Noah is the type that Peter is using for Jesus. What do Noah and Jesus have in common according to Peter? A lot, actually. Noah offered salvation to all humanity. Jesus offers salvation to all humanity. Noah did all the work necessary for salvation. Jesus did all the work necessary for salvation. Noah preached salvation and was rejected by the masses. Jesus preached salvation and was rejected by the masses. Noah could save your life. Jesus will save your soul. Very few were saved by Noah's preaching. Very few will be saved by Jesus' preaching. Noah was saved from corruption (sin) by the flood. In the same way, we are saved by baptism when sin is erased. Peter did not say Noah was saved by the ark or that he was saved from the flood. When people try to insert these claims, the passage becomes confusing. Stick with what Peter wrote and it's easy to understand. When you read the Genesis account, you will agree that Noah was never in danger of the flood. His good conscience toward God saved him from the flood. The flood saved him from the influence of sin. Put all that together and what you get is simple: Noah preached Jesus to his generation which was lost anyway due to unbelief. How could Noah have preached Jesus? He didn't, but he preached an almost identical message. Repent and save your life versus repent and save your soul. Noah's generation perished both physically and spiritually and Peter's message is, "Don't let this happen to you!" How we went from Noah was a type of Christ to Enoch was a type of Christ, I have no idea. Jesus didn't go preach to anyone and Peter doesn't say He did. Peter says the people who heard the message of salvation (Christ's message) in the days of Noah are all in prison now, but we can be saved by baptism, when we answer God's call by wiping away sin and obtaining a clean slate. (Romans 6 paints the clearest picture of what happens when we are baptized.) The poor placement of the verses is really the biggest challenge in trying to understand what Peter was saying, but the second biggest is videos posted by doctors who can't tell the difference between Noah and Enoch.

@@tessw9744 Yeah, I Peter 4:6 is hard to get around. Heiser has great content in his books. I've learned a lot from him. But I think he has a blind spot when it comes to I Peter 3/4. For example, in the video he implies baptism is like going "down" into the realm where the spirits in prison are, and coming up in victory over spiritual forces of evil that are located there. Yet the passage doesn't even remotely convey this idea. It compares being saved through the waters of the flood with being saved through the waters of baptism. In the flood story, as Peter references,, the ark allows them to be lifted up above the waters of destruction. Their starting point is the earth. They never go "down" until the flood waters recede, but even then they only go back down to the earth (not under the earth). In baptism, we "get in the ark" (Christ) and are lifted up, by the resurrection of Jesus, saving us/lifting us up above the "flood of dissipation" (4:4). That's why baptism is an appeal of a good conscience towards God. We are saying to God, "We agree with your judgment about our/their sinful ways (the will of the Gentiles 44:3) and want to be saved/lifted out of that way of life, and do the will of God through "good conduct" (3:16, 4:2-3). The point of I Peter 3:13-4:6 is that Peter wants them to, like Jesus, use their unjust suffering as an opportunity to evangelize and bear witness to the hope of the resurrection.

4:6 did not specify that the preaching was done AFTER they had died, neither does this verse specify that this preaching was done BY JESUS HIMSELF. It could be referring to preaching" carried out by the apostles to their contemporaries BEFORE THEY DIED (while they were alive) More importantly, the people who were RAISED FROM THE DEAD along with Jesus (according to Matthew) on Easter COULD NO LONGER BE DESCRIBED AS STILL BEING DEAD AS AT THE TIME OF THE WRITING OF 1 Peter. Thus 1 Peter 4:6 could not have been referring to Jesus preaching to OT saints who had died before him & where subsequently raised along with him (according to Matthew) That verse is for Heiser easy to "get around" once you throw aside the assumption that the text was referring to anything Jesus did between good Friday & Easter Sunday (nothing warrants that assumption)

Happy for this variation of the understanding I also received as a revelation that water baptism in the name of Jesus isn't just a symbolic act or an initiation ritual but rather a gracious means provided by God for unclean spirits to flee and make room for the Holy Spirit now to indwell the repentant believer. "Why water?" I asked the Lord and He later opened my eyes to the purpose God used the flood to rid the world of those demonic beings and saved Noah and his family. Also, Jesus explained in Matthew 12: 43-45 how unclean spirits seek out people in waterless places! Hence in this context, we understand 1 Peter 3: 21 that baptism now saves. To be immersed with Christ into Christ we can make a pledge of good conscience to remain in Him. What better antidote for mental health issues!

The fact that he speak to the spirits in prison is a nice detail but has nothing to do with baptism symbolism. It's a cool story and probably true but 1 Pe 3:21 clearly says the baptism is an anti-type of the ark surviving the flood. While the world is dying to the flood you come up of the flood into the ark provided by God provision. Your body of death is dead by the circumcision made without hands. The inner man is the ark, you flesh is the world. The ark is one of many types of Jesus Christ in the bible. The Holy Spirit floods your soul and kills the flesh while the inner man is the ark. That's what "mortify you flesh through the spirit" means. The baptism is a dramatization of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Death, burial and resurrection. Colossians 2:12 (KJV) Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

By accomplishing His Mission of Redemption Christ earned the right to enter Satan's realm as the Victor - having remained faithful to God right to the end of His earthly life in spite of all the torments thrown at Him towards the end. I knew that once was enough but many years after my first baptism, I had to opportunity to see people get baptised during a gathering in Holland and had a strong desire to get baptised too in this very cold river. The night before I dreamt that I saw a huge album photos of my life on the wall, I took it and started to go through it. I did not know what it meant but got baptised again anyway. After what u said, maybe I reaffirmed to the bad guys underneath that my salvation was a done deal.

Rebaptism in Christianity is the baptism of a person who has previously been baptized, usually in association with a denomination that does not recognize the validity of the previous baptism. When a denomination rebaptizes members of another denomination, it is a sign of significant differences in theology. Churches that practice exclusive believer's baptism, including Baptists and Churches of Christ, rebaptize those who were baptized as infants because they do not consider infant baptism to be valid. Rebaptism is generally associated with: Anabaptism, from Greek ἀνα- (re-) and βαπτίζω (I baptize) Definitely that require believer's baptism, such as the Baptist Churches Mormonism Oneness Pentecostal churches en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebaptism

@@JustinHunterTCM Hence the words "too much". I understand there's a bit of toe-stepping when you're in a good and exciting conversation; it was just a bit much, in my opinion.

Interrupts? All I hear is him in verbal agreement. It was halfway through the clip before he even said a whole sentence. His later questions and statements are quite helpful in my opinion.
