Who was the Forgotten Flag Raiser? Veterans Breakfast Club

Ойын-сауық

A few years ago, an amateur researcher named Eric Krelle made a blockbuster discovery about the famous photograph of Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. Krelle figured out that Private First Class Harold Schultz appears in the iconic image, not John Bradley, the Navy corpsman whose son wrote the bestseller Flags of our Fathers. The book and Clint Eastwood’s film adaptation were proved inaccurate. After at first resisting Eric Krelle’s claims, the Marine Corps finally conceded: Harold Schulz was the forgotten flag raiser.
On Sunday, October 4, Eric Krelle spoke on Greatest Generation Live about the research he did on the forgotten flag raiser and why honoring all those who served on Iwo Jima is so important.

Two of my uncles were there. Lee Logan and James Lee Husted. James was wounded in the neck by shrapnel. He watched the flag raised from the ship. Both suffered post traumatic stress. Sadly, Lee Logan became an alcoholic while trying to deal with post traumatic stress. He literally drank himself to death. He was a good man. He used to come to my grandfather's home and he would always have dynamite in his trunk and some interesting firearms. I still remember a little 22 caliber Browning semi auto that he let me shoot. I think I was 7 years old. He sent walnuts up on fence posts and we sat on the porch and shot the off. James Husted Died April of 2018. He left his wife of 75 years.

Just watched a documentary on this done by the Smithsonian Channel. They have the positions of Ira Hayes and Harold Schultz switched. They were able to identify Schultz from the sling on his rifle (Schultz is the only Marine carrying a rifle that is visible in the photo) and match it to the ‘Gung Ho’ photo.

No wonder people get confused. Your highlighting Ira Hayes as Harold Schutz at 3:47

My uncle Leroy was there and saw the American flag being risen on Mount suribachi. Everytime I see the picture of the flag being risen it just adds more patriotism to my heart. President Trump we need you back you are America's Superman
