Welcome to our KZread channel, solely dedicated to words.
Say Your Word is a digital platform by the acclaimed novelist, storyteller and women’s rights activist Elif Shafak.
A platform for words and anyone who cares about them.
Language is the key to understanding and unlocking our world.
It is also the key to the human heart.
Words are often said to have power.
What is not said that often is that they can hurt and even spread hatred and hostility, just like they can heal and bring about love, empathy and wisdom.
They can divide, distance and "dehumanise", just like they can connect and “rehumanise" those who have been dehumanised.
East and West, North and South, regardless of race, sex, gender, colour, religion, ethnicity, nationality or any other category, we are all made of stories.
Stories bring us together, untold stories keep us apart.
Today's word is IDENTITY

As a person who have lived across India, as you said nomadic upbringing, with every states different culture and language. I have had a same problem "where are you from" with lump in my throat, I would always answer to the place I was born but never could terms with it. This is a common conversation starter, but it also creates space for stereotypes to the place I am from and how the other person percives, if i prove it, case in point and if I do not, they make assuptions ti fit the narrative in there head. Identity today is not what I think of myself but what the others think of me, as you have mentioned in your book Forty Rules of love ,"its dangerous if people know me and I don't know myself" (paraphrasing) But its also beautiful,as the borders more porus now then ever before, such questions are natural, but there is always the insecurity which binds the fears who we are and our roots.

Living as a citizen of the world with no identity is like living as a nomad nowadays without having a nationality

Very true that, when we are losing our identity we identify ourselves by our birth place. We are human (sapiens ) and it is our actual identity among all other creatures, but when we are in need of identity in relation to other humans we must have something special that we have achieved by our own efforts, unfortunately most of us don't have any such thing to be identified with..after al ong break (almost 10yrs) I read a book THE FORTY RULES OF LOVE a very great work by Elif Shafak and that is the true identity of Elif Shafak for me. in my opinion if a person is identified by a work or deed that she or he has done exclusively by her or his personal efforts, is ok. But how can one have an identity for which the person have no personal efforts or have no control in that i.e birth place, mother tongue and tribe etc.
