Was watching an opera by Vivaldi called Dorilla in Tempe the other day on You Tube and this aria appears in that opera as well -same words but to a different but very similar melody. Baroque composers often did that sort of thing - using basically the same tune but "improving" and embellishing it - Handel did the same thing with the famous "Ombra mai fu" from Xerxes which appeared previously in an opera by Bononcini and before that in an opera by Cavalli.

WTF why are there no comments? Anyway, who sings the best? Anne Hallenberg!!!, who i think is one of the best "Singers" at the moment and blessed with the RNG of a " Great voice". Jaroussky is an " Ornamentation-Fineliner". Sabadus is this new generation of CTs who found a way to compete with women, concerning "smoothness" of voice ( though some do not like the "nasal sound" of it.) They are all able to sing this aria ( Handel i love you!), ... that is more than you get sometimes for your money.

IMO Valer is spot-on in certain respects (although there's a little too much scooping). His dotted rhythms are ideal: there's impulse, buoyancy & effortlessness. His rendition is also a bit less square than the others, & it's consistent w/ Handel's subtle stretching of the 6/8 meter.

The natural voice of a mezzo cannot be compared to the falsetto voice from the countertenor. Their voices are in different categories. Natural voice of the soprano has better colors and more dynamic range. I like countertenors too, but i’m very surprissed with the results off Philippe Jarousky. He has very loyal fans. There is (or used to be) a better rendering by P.J. on You Tube--an actual recital video. Of the three performances here, Valer, the slight scooping aside, is probably closer to what Handel intended; he has the affect, character & dramatic situation better in hand. By minimizing the important consonant "M" in the first phrase A.H. takes some of the punch from Handel's inspired word setting. P.J. is not helped by his instr. ensemble & I've heard him sing Italian better.
