Who should or shouldn’t come to Taiwan ? ❌ 🇹🇼 🚫 誰不應該來台灣?

Taiwan’s recently become a very desirable location for foreigners all around the world because of the way we controlled the virus and prevented a lockdown. But... I don’t think Taiwan is a suitable country for every type of person to come and live.

Great video! I lived in Taiwan right after university, and I had lots of ups and downs. I love the country and the people so much and it was a ton of fun. Lots of good times and some lonely times, too. By the end of my stint, I was ready to go and feeling a bit depressed. It was a problem with myself and not Taiwan, of course. I think it's harder to be a young single woman living alone in Taiwan than to be a single male or a couple. Just my perspective. I find myself wanting to come back all the time now that I'm older, more mature, and have a family! I love Taiwan and hope to come back soon! It's my home away from home and I'll always feel that way.

As far as your topic is concerned, I can add nothing on what you've mentioned in this video, but I do believe that you forgot one thing: there is a category of foreigners who come to Taiwan for learning Mandarin. Though I felt pity, I’d like to say u r not the only one who felt it. Even as a Taiwanese and live here, I and my mom also felt lonely during Chinese New Year. Let’s take it easy. What if one day you try to create a group gathering those feel like to company each other and share warms even they don’t know each other before... perhaps it can be a good idea and share ur love with more people. Perhaps u can be that leader leads shy people to a open mind and smiling life.

I started coming to Taiwan as a buyer in the manufacturing sector. I met my wife in Taiwan, so we decided to plant some roots there. I never bothered with becoming a resident as I never foresaw a time where I would not need to travel out of the country within the 90 day tourist visa that I get issued. Taiwan was very generous in extending my visa several times when COVID broke out, but eventually we left and are now in HK (where we both have residency). But I hope to come back as soon as they start letting people back in, as I consider it one of my homes.

Hi there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts frankly in this video clip. Quite a few points raised here must've been appreciated and agreed among your viewers. At the same time, I'd like to further elaborate on the idea of teaching English as a way to finance travelers' living (and expense). L2 acquisition is something Taiwanese value tremendously with parents willing to spend a good fortune on kids' learning. Much steep knowledge in ELF (different from ESL) is then required of an educator, aside from his/her adventurous, enthusiastic energy. The technicality in such teaching involves the understanding of syntax, dictions, phonetics, TPR, content-based learning, elicitation of the four commands of language in relation to relevant test items, psycho-pedagogical influences on overall literacy, etc. are, which I must say, not easily attained within a year or without the proper credentials/training. Taiwan, indeed, is a hospitable country welcoming tourists and foreigners who wish to find a new life/career path, and I'm sure those who posses credible TESOL/EFL/ESL experience are very much in demand in the world of English language learning. Including this one, your videos have been fun to watch and sparked voices all around; hopefully, my two cents have not offended anyone thus far.

    別自以為立論正確,胸懷偉大,有多少老外搶了台灣人在美語老師的工作,這薪水不低,但職缺就是老外優先(憑的是他們是老外)。台灣人就是對本地人嚴格無情,對外來人寬容熱情

On the negative side, I also know there are those with very negative attitude, either married a Taiwanese guy/gal, settle in Taiwan or was sent by their company to work in Taiwan, but can't fit in or refused to fit in, refuse to learn and understand the culture. You can see them post negative comments on news media(Taipei Time for example), whine about everything, how much they hate the place etc, those perhaps shouldn't be in Taiwan.....

About whether or not transient travellers (backpackers/short-term visitors of sorts) are good candidates for teaching English in Taiwan, I think it depends. If they have good prior experience in teaching English as 2nd language and have the right mind set, then yes, they could be good candidates. If I was the hiring manager, I would check their qualifications and references even just for a short term teaching contract. After all, proficency in English and the ability to teach English to foreigners effectively are two very different things.

I think a bit missing is the group of people coming to TW for studying. Especially learning Mandarin and exchange students are a pretty large group in my opinion. And I would add, that not every in-laws is so welcoming to foreigners, some are a bit reserved and seem to have picked up too much of the negative headlines in the media.

From the positive side, there is one category missing, short term working visa/exchange work/Big Overseas experience/, Taiwan signed up with working visa with Australia/NZ and I believe Canada as well around 20 years ago, which allows Taiwanese to go work for short term from data entry/receptionist to (more popular) farm work/fruit picker/vineyard grapes picker in Australia/NZ/Canada and vice versa Aussies/Kiwi/Canadian can work in Taiwanese rice paddies/pineapple farms/fruit plantations as well as fisheries for short term. These will belong to your positive category, absolutely should come for a bit of short term experience in country Taiwan and sample fruit/marine products from fisheries , and great culture exchange too.

5:20 visa is quite difficult for some reason unless you want a teaching, factory, or nursing job. very close to getting my fcking work visa declined, the outcome in 2 weeks for revision. as in 2021, not the best place for younger people in their 20s to find a job, where their sole goal is to work in a foreign country to find experience, breakeven living cost, and not put your life in danger. and yes this means that I am fluent in Chinese conversation and have graduated from a Taiwanese university

I like you a lot, not because you love my country, but because you speak from your heart, and you have that kind of "Taiwanese" quality that makes the local people want to be nice to you. You know there are also those who cannot tolerate Taiwan, and likewise, those who were in Taiwan but were not received very well by the locals. There are reasons for these, but in your case, it's win against win. Congratulations!
