Layne Staley is never given the credit or accolades that were due. He didn't have to stomp around a stage or have a "grunge" look. He captivated an audience not just by the words, but how he sang them. You could feel his torment with his yeah's and ooh's ("Love, Hate, Love") or even a simple "We" and "My" ("Nutshell"). That man could sing the high notes, as well as the low. If you want a good laugh, watch guest singers try to sing "Would?" They try, but they can't hit that high note in the first chorus verse of "Into the flood again..." Layne was a class that can't be defined by "grunge" or any one simple genre. That's what made him such a great vocalist. ❤

If you really listen to him and analyse his singing, there's not a lot to fault. Awesome range, could sing hard and soft with equal intensity, extreme vocal control; just an all-round excellent vocalist. Coupled with his lyrical skills, musicianship, and command of the stage, definitely agree that he was the best grunge frontman by a country mile.

Layne Staley, hands down, was the absolute best out of the 4. He's a damn rock god. His lyrics and pain that came through when he sang will *never ever* be matched. People like to say CC is better, but his live shows were never as fucking incredible as Layne's. I always felt a little underwhelmed when watching Chris because I always expected him to hit those paint-peeling notes, but he never really did deliver what we all knew he could do or at least did on the studio versions. Layne was even *better* live which is insane to think about knowing how perfect the studio versions were. Also, you guys should have a playlist for Layne or AIC during Layne's era. You guys obviously care for him enough to name a playlist "The Needle and the Damage Done," which was the title of a really shitty article that Rolling Stone Magazine wrote about Layne.

@@CenterThePendulum Sure, Cornell was the more technically gifted vocalist, but I rate Staley slightly higher because as an 'artist' he could stir up more emotion in his listeners. We were spoiled with abundance in the late 80's to mid 90's or so. There will never be, nor has there been, another era that touches the sheer talent of that time. No one said anything about songwriting, you already seem on the defensive for Jerry, or your own knowledge on the band. Again, I haven't counted, but I give their harmonies to the live shows, and dubs on the album. Jerry himself stated he did not want to sing early on because "We got that guy", and it was Layne who inspired him to do it. Layne doubles on Sickman, while Jerry harmonizes in the live performances. Stale confusion is the only way I can describe it, as death comes and goes, and you can't change the outcome. The passing of anyone close to you hurts, just forgive, remember the best and heal. Luckily, Layne left us with a lot. So, as your statement is factual, it's not how many of us remember him. Layne was a F'n powerhouse, and a gentle soul, all wrapped into one. Anyone that knows his story, knows he lost his battle, admitted his faults, and crawled away like an old dog. Had he been wired just a little different, he may still be around, who knows... @Stephen Hughes Thats because mainstream consumers today will eat whatever they put in front of them. But it wasn't as bad in the 90s as success from a financial, cultural, and influential standpoint Nirvana had a much bigger impact than the rest of them. Idk how you can argue that. Yes, you probably a lot of points that you would be right in that the other 3 were more musically talented and technical than Nirvana across the board but no doubt Nirvana was the most successful of the whole bunch.

Chris has always been my favourite of the four. He was the best writer, of both music and lyrics, he was the most experimental, and he had the best stage presence. Of the big four he's really the only one who felt like a traditional rockstar in my opinion. "That guy [Chris] has the most beautiful fucking voice in rock." ~ Chester Bennington.
