Who's the Boss? AR4000D 4k MAX Amp Dyno Test

#Boss #4000watts #AmpDyno
The Boss AR4000D is advertised to deliver "4000 Watts MAX" at a cost of around 100 US dollars. Most people who know car audio and ratings know this is a bloated rating. Many people want to know what is the true, RMS power rating of this amplifier? Well, let's take a look at the amp, hook it up to a subwoofer and try it out on the Amp Dyno.

Hell, if they named this amp "AR-1000D" it would still be legit (won't deliver a 1000w of clean power, but will still do more than 1000w uncertified or dynamic), and if they actually put rated RMS power in the manuals for all the ohm loads.. well, let's say 400w in 4 ohms, 700w in 2 ohms, and 1000w in 1 ohm, that would have been an amazing deal for 100 bucks.

We do a smaller version of this amp in our 5 o'clock special subwoofer combo package. Reliability wise, we never get them back. It would be nice if they did not over rate them like they do. For the price and performance, people might take it more serious. They are not bad little amps.

I have a Boss 1600 watt 2 channel(bridged) pushing a 1500 watt 15" sub strongly. I've had it for 4 years and it's still going strong and has never over heated. I've read alot of reviews bc people say Boss amps suck. In general people seem overall happier with the 2 channel vs mono-blocks. Mine seems alot closer to the actual numbers specified. Would love to see a dyno of a 2 channel to compare with the mono-block.

I used to work for a small shop where Boss was the biggest brand we could get legitimately. This is back in 1995 when they were almost unknown. At the time, they seemed to be wanting to compete with the larger brands and had a pro line as well as offer a base line. Their pro stuff was rock sold and I'd even say the ratings were accurate. Their base line stuff was exaggerated, but similar to this review. The price was so good that people forgave it. And honestly, all of our customers were very happy. We were able to set people up with a very loud system for under $500 using a "600w" Boss amp and a pair of Earthquake Annihilator subs installed. That was cheap in the day. They always came back to us saying how they kept up with people who had $1000 systems. We never tried to convince people that their amps were top end stuff, just a good value. And comparing the Boss amps to other cheap brands (Pyramid, Power Acoustik, Rockwood, etc.) at the time, Boss came out way ahead. I have always thought that Boss had many good heatsink designs through the years. Particularly the AVA-600M or AVA-400M. Oh and I still have a couple of those amps from 1995 and they still work perfectly. Sadly, I can't say that about a lot of the Rockford/Soundstream/Phoenix Gold amps I have.

That's exactly what a real audio custom installer home or shop would do too. Or do like I did when I was 16 and I had some white coned realistic speakers and went to the stereo store and stole the BOSE tags off the speaker grills and pinned them to my grills on those poopy realistics. lol. People were stupid fooled just believing what they saw and bragged all over the school... Nifty got those Bose 12's yo!!!!! lololol. If you are truly unique you would use no brand name and make your own brand name and put it on everything you own like red hot sauce. My name back then for installation and comp was Vigorous Sounds. I ripped all tags off every speaker dust cap and magnet as well as the amps and repainted and relabeled into my color scheme and name. This isn't a Boss ride or a Rockford ride it's fkn Vigorous Sounds mufuckaaaaaaa!! lol.

Derek, I decided to order this amp today, 2/7/20, based on your review. I didn't pay $85.00 you paid, as Amazon's price went up to $114.95. But I wound up paying $109.95 for it on Walmart.com, which still seemed like a pretty good deal, even though it was a bit more than I wanted to spend. I watched several of your amp dynos, as well as many of Budget Gems. Despite the fact that Boss grossly exaggerates, and sensationalized their ratings with their fictitious figures, I found I was quite hard pressed to find an amp actual dyno tested figures of power this high for $100. The watts per dollar in the neighborhood of 950 + watts dynamically at 2 ohms looks pretty hard to beat. And nothing beats the validated research you do, and dyno results. I'm thinking this should drive my two JBL 12" subs, at 4 ohms each for a final 2 ohm load quite nicely. Interested in hearing your thoughts and opinions on that. I was also impressed with your thoughts on the build quality, and the fact you had a hard time destroying a Boss, short of dropping shreds of copper wires inside of the chassis. That in itself speaks volumes of what one might anticipate in terms of an amps durability, and longevity. I considered many amps, and found a few that did come close, but went up in price dramatically since being dynoed. One in particular was the Walmart in store stock Power Acoustic amp for $69 when dynoed by Budget Gems, which is now almost $100.00 in store. No doubt retailers like Amazon and Walmart are watching these dynos, and marking up their price. In any case, I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your videos, and how influential, and helpful they are for us naive consumers out here, who are quite easily duped by market strategy, deception, and baloney some of these snake oil salespeople will try to have us believe. At least those of us armed with knowledge you provide can make educated choices, and find value for our hard earned dollar. For that sir, I thank you for all your efforts.

People are just caught up in the "youtube hype", thinking they need the biggest, baddest car audio to beat. Farthest from the truth. I've built, seen and heard systems from both ends of the spectrum. It's a preference in the end. I love them all, but like seeing budget systems over high-end any day. If you hook it up right and put it in descent inclosure, it's gonna bang.

Best amp under $200. Its basically a JBL GTX500 that goes to 1 ohm which the JBL can't. This Boss though beats that JBL when running 1 ohm and both were priced similarly. Keep in mind that this Boss is 58.5% efficient running it like you see in this video (at least going by my math I could be wrong) where that JBL will around 80%. 160 amps and 13.7v at 100% efficiency would be 2192 watts. This is only seeing 1425 watts. At 80% efficiency you would get 1753 watts which is realistic for a better quality amp. You will not get an amp like this for even close to $100 though.

I strapped my two AR 4,000 together and wired my two Audiopipe Txx BDC 15s down to 1 ohm and I have to say Big D !!! You are right!!! Not bad for the price. These subs are frickin slammin with two amps strapped and two amps for only $200 bucks a person really can't go wrong. I'm happy with AR 4,000 for the price. Thanks for your honesty.

Keep in mind that when strapped together the minimum impedance changes from 1 ohm to 2 ohm. You say your wired down to one ohm, but I think in reality you're amplifiers are not seeing a signal below 2 ohm due to box rise or impedance rise. The AC impedance is always going to be higher than your measured DC resistance.

A guy came to my shop with 2 of those "monsters" and 2 boss "2300watt" 12s he thought it banged. And was the loudest setup on the block.AAAnd it sounded like crap especially with the gain up all the way also on one battery rip off red top. 1000ca. And don't forget the box was one big rattle trap. His voltage drop tremendously were the car wanted to shut off. But after I redid the wiring with stinger 1/0 to the And for the big 3/4 also reinforced his box with some dail rods and a extra baffle. I also added a XS power D1200 in the back. Did the speaker wire as well (12gauge Rockford fosgate) each amp was tuned with a DD1 and gain match with a CC1. The system actually surprised the heck out of me according my to APM-1 he meter A 143db sealed. So it's loud for the price he paid. Boss maybe knocked but in the right box and tuned correctly it can bang That goes for any manufacturer. It's up to the installed to make it awesome.

Whoa - the box says 4000W PEAK POWER instead of max - are these manufacturers attempting to change marketing tactics (slightly)??? My guess was 850-900W dynamic into 1 ohm, 700-800W RMS non-cert into 1 ohm. So it did so better then my guesstimate, making me quite pleased to see the results. In terms of assembly, it does look like some of these Chinese makes are attempting to step up the game a bit (though I'd like to see a wider sampling before I commit to that). But it's still a lousy move to market a 1400W Dynamic power amp as a 4000W amp (be it peak, max, etc.). I'd be ecstatic to pay $85 for this amp if it had 900W label. Heck, I'd be just as happy if it had a 1400W Dynamic label. Not to mention, I'd be significantly less apprehensive. That's what I wish many of these manufacturers would learn...

To be fair though - For people that even somewhat know what they're doing (IE: Watching BidDWiz's amp reviews) they will likely stay away from these sorts of brands (Pyle, Planet Audio, Boss, etc..) in the first place. The company most likely gets more sales due to individuals who do no research and are just looking at big numbers for a low price (there's a LOT of those people compared to those who do their homework). I get your point though, if they were more honest I'd definitely be more willing to purchase their gear.

I think your generous on the 15V assumption. Granted some people do run 16V for better performance, but all car alternators are 15V Ice cold, to 14.4V expected Voltage to 13.8V hot, with internal regulator. So I hope no one runs a large system without the car on. LOL. Still I would give this amp a generous 1656 watt rating at it's lowest possible Ohm rating. Myself I owned a good Boss amp over 20 years ago, it came with a 6 year warranty, and it actually held up. Eventually it suffered from vibration damage.

I bought 4 of these in the past, 3 of the caps inside blow after a while driving at 2 ohms. You'll see my review on amazon to replace them. This is a good amp for the buck, really is, and as BigDWiz says great for starter setup because that was when I had my starter setup. I had the 2000, then the 3000, then the 4000, and I actually liked these amps until they started blowing those caps. But in reality if you want power just dish out the money ahead of time and get good amps and good power. As with any amp make sure you have enough power to push these, you don't need much extra especially if you just have 1 amp, a HO alternator and maybe a second battery.

Yep, it's 100% legal. And the car audio market isn't the only place you see these practices. Ever look at computer speakers? My servo drive Yamaha multimedia speakers where advertised as 100W "max" though the manual said 12W RMSx2. Yeah they are quite old now (but still work and sound great) - I don't think Yamaha makes computer speakers any more (too bad). Oh heck, just look at consumer home audio gear (esp the no-name brands).

Takes double the power for +3db which in loudness perception is basically just barely perceptible. So it wouldn't really matter much anyway. You can see here the real world numbers, it's a $100...what does anyone expect? It could be half the power and no one would even notice because most normal people don't max out their volume knob with correct gain settings anyway.

I have to say.. Boss are surprisingly good for a budget brand! I'm quite impressed with the way it protects there too! I've kept an old Boss Audio amp for years, it claims 160w x2 or 320w bridged to 4Ohms.. It does nowhere near that but really is 2Ohm stereo stable! Protected by a 20A fuse it does seem to put out more than 80WRMS per channel! Had it mounted on my wall for a while driving two pairs of speakers, running from a switchmode PSU, only giving it 12v but the brick was capable of 203 Watts (guess what brick i used!) and certainly made the neighbours complain.. The speakers were a pair of 8Ohm 8" Acoustic Solutions Powerforce 1000s (i think) and a pair of Mission 750 Anniversary edition (6Ohm) which sounded surprisingly good! Helps it was driven by a rather good sound card too. I also replaced the mediocre 4558D op-amp preamps for NE5532s. Only 'issue' with the amp is...it's pink!

I just got a Boss R2000M mono block amp that's rated 2000 peak and 1500 RMS to power 2 12" Boss CXX12 subs rated at 1000 watt peak and 500 RMS. Paid just shy of $120 all together. They aren't winning any sound comps by any means, but for that kind of price, I really can't complain about their performance.

Willing to bet it on the cheap ass capacitors. Fingers crossed on my "1200 watt" 4 channel, solid so far. I have two channels bridged running my sub and the other 2 for my speakers, with the gains properly set it's impressive for the price I paid, definitely better than head unit power. Considering putting a 1500 watt monoblock in for the sub and running the 1200 watt as a dedicated 4 channel.

256 watts total at 1 ohm. You have to realize it's not 120 amp it's rated for. It's only 40 amps. Cuz anytime anything over 40 amps runs across any one of those 3 fuses it's gonna pop a fuse if it's continuous.

Why are they doing this? 4K watts for that amp is crazy. No one anywhere would be upset if you rated that thing for 1400w and at $100 that is a steal! Boss would be the GO TO manufacturer for cheap watts if they rated it truthfully.

  • @carpetcleaningprofessor
    @carpetcleaningprofessor7 жыл бұрын

what I just don't understand is why the manufacturer just can't throw the rated power out there where else can you get a $100 thousand watt amp I mean would they seriously sell you less if they said rated power thousand Watts if anything people would be able to brag about it thank you for the video

Don't think anyone can really say much negative towards it. Biggest issue is some user buying subs according to the supposed wattage. However, if the true wattage was actually stated, the amp probably would sell just as good and garner more respect. That's why I love these amp dyno vids... nothing like having actual proof.

  • @wal

+Denis M I'm guessing their subs have bloated ratings to match the amps, so as long as you stick with the same brand you can match them 🤔

I'd even go as far as saying it would be ideal to use on decent quality subs of about half power or so to ensure the amp isn't stressed.

For what it [actually] puts out, it's not a bad deal for $85. It actually performed better at 1 ohm than I expected. There's better options out there too. But my biggest gripe is these cheap amp manufacturers with bogus claims like "4000 watts" when then fusing makes it obvious that it would be impossible (unless this amp could somehow handle 36+ volts lol). I don't expect everyone who's dropping $85 on an amp to have extensive electrical knowledge, but I would hope that something could be done about these companies that make false claims of their output/capability. Decades ago I was turned on to JL Audio because they rated their speakers at true RMS. The first 500 watt monoblock Class D amp they ever made, I bought one, it cost me $450 at the time (about $1200 in today's current money). It was advertised at 500 watts RMS. The certified paper that came with it said 1720 watts peak, which I believe because I was pushing a set of W3's that I was blowing line fuses with regularly until I went with a 100-amp breaker that I would only occasionally trip when I tried pushing it too far. In older age now I don't need something that rattles windows half mile away, but I still buy higher-end stuff just for the fidelity and capability to support a robust soundstage. That's the most important thing I learned once I jumped from cheap bargain stuff to more expensive brands, the quality of what you're hearing goes up dramatically regardless of loudness. I'll take 500 watts of clean volume over 800 watts of clipping every day.

Those are very respectable numbers for the price and it is a good looking amp. My only complaint is that they don't give you an honest RMS power output rating.

Thank you for you kind words....your statement is what Ive been saying all along....these are designed for the movice or someone just getting started...but that price is why tbe company buys as many chinese made amps and audio. I wish that they remove that max power rating and label the product as it really is and it would change how most view it...if installed as it should they perform well but they also sell a few paper weights as well so be warned...again thanks for that 90 cent per watt thingy

Big D been scope'n your vidz or years and have seen all kinds of amps true colors revealed but i cant recall ever seeing any Old Hollywood Sound Labs I have an RS-800 that ive repaired so many times the copper is gone where the transistors mount and I have to run the leads directly to the input resistors and the heat bars hold them in place. I have not seen any info on the specs but its a 2 channel class AB cheater amp, No fuse onboard, mine will run great in AZ heat for months bridged mono at 1 Ohm then out of the blue not even warm at low volume at a stop light ill see flames inside the clear plexi cover as another transistor burns up. A test of anything they made would be fun to see. and 1 other company ive never seen is Kenwood, never was a fan till i took out my RS-800 for repairs and saw i had a kenwood execlon 1600 sitting in a stack of amps that sat untested for years. I was very surprized when I installed it, Been my substitute amp for years now, never an issue always at 1 ohm and always in the hottest livable environment on earth. Any kenwood amp test just to see what they do compared to advertised. Not a popular brand, mine sat untested for at least 5 years, i dont even know where i picked mine up thats how much i thought of Kenwood before i decided to see if it even worked. its rated at 400w @4ohms 800w@2ohms 1600w@1ohm class D mono. or how about a Kole {i run a big 2 channel AB bridged mono 1 ohm without issues)

I did buy a planet audio 5k .... Lol no it put out maybe 1,000 hooked up to my soundstream splx 12" ....it lasted for 2 years.. now I got a Brutis amp from power of the Gods, it's way cleaner. But bang for the buck.... I've been a fan of the Kenwood excelon series.... but always trying other brands. Been into audio since the late 1980s... I've sold Orion, Kenwood, kicker, pioneer, MA audio, Panasonic, infinity, virtual technology they made awesome boxes, and the hammer line of subs. The Amps were made by Harris labs. I was a electronic strore manager for over 10 year's. We did up around 1.6-1.8 million a year with 5 employee's... the owner passed away and store is gone now... I sure do miss the old days of db drags, ect....was fun putting it on for the Fan's of audio.
