It's interesting how sincere Will seems before Lila takes over, he seems like a genuinely pretty okay guy, he's just awkward and a little shy and doesn't know what to do with his face. By comparison, Lila is condescending, intimidating, and eerily unfeeling but also exceptionally intense all at the same time

@@shoobzy3431 People, and especially young people and children, are incredibly adverse to the abnormal and strange. For someone such as William, they probably made fun of him to keep from being associated with him, therefore isolating him further. Life from childhood to young adulthood is no walk in the park, it's a test of mental endurance for many.

Epic fail, I kind of skipped through the game a bit to see what it's about and thought this whole time that Will was a woman and was trying for 5 minutes to find out who this Will guy was after reading this comment. xD

Based on Lila's reaction to the questions about the Strength card, I think the implication is that in that ending she actually lost control of Will, which is why he ends up confessing.

If the text says William William is in control, if there is no name it's Lila the rule of thumb. There's also some brief expression changes that show one personality or the other has switched in or Lila is sleeping.

It’s really interesting how the uncontrolled facial expressions when it’s just William in there are so awkward and painful but situationally appropriate, while for when Lila is driving the expressions are normal, but twisted and inappropriate.

Pretty sure it's a subtle Persona 4 reference, because the main character of P4 technically has no name but is as a default named Yu, since he is supposed to represent the player in all respects.

It's sad to see William make a decent impression with the people in his flashbacks and make friends, only to have them hate him because they know the truth about Tanya's disappearance.

So, it seems like the cult of Lawrence has been trying to get in contact with the spirit world. Specifically, they have a fascination with Lila, possibly because they can actually visualize her. They made a reel to force her even more into the physical realm and have greater contact with her. The thing about these spiritual beings, though, is that they like to have hosts. The members became obsessed and all wanted her to be theirs, but she picked William. Tulpas may either be a misunderstanding of the spirits or a red herring ("Pretend William cares about tulpas" during the interrogation). William's mother seems to have a weird connection to this. She appears to be the Empress, which might mean that William's mother spiritually ascended or that she was herself possessed all along. Could also play a role in why Lila picked him. We haven't seen much of Lawrence yet, either. The Emperor/Prince seems to prefer mimicking many human faces instead of taking a host. This might be how he lures prey. It seems like all of the spiritual creatures, including Lila and the boiler room Empress, need feeding. That's what Lawrence's farm was for. Side note: I really appreciate the sound design in this game. I have moderate hearing loss and usually can't hear sound differences in sound puzzles or hear atmospheric music, but I can in this game. It makes the game a lot more enjoyable for me. Thank you for that.

From what lila said to Yu in the death ending, I'm under the impressiont that what "spirits" (and i do think they are Tulpas of a sort) "feed" of is attention. And I don't see how animals would provide that. Lila at least seems to imply she feed of Yu trying to find more about her. It could be a lie, it could be a red herring, as everything Lila says is... highly suspect, but i'm not so sure it's an outright lie either as:uch of her lies tend to be bsed around a kernel of truth.

@@s.m.2523 Tulpas might play into how some "spiritual" things are supposed to be more powerful the more you pay attention to them. The idea of if you look for it, they'll be attracted to you. Ignore them and they'll go away. The animals might also have been for the boiler room creature.

You really do make the best horror game playthroughs. Not only are they the most atmospheric, but also the most relaxing. It's honestly quite the paradox! Other youtubers really take me out of it with screaming/loud talking, and I jump the most due to it. Yet Manly's videos feel like they build the most tension and fear, and yet I dont feel in constant danger or terror because I know he isnt going to scare me himself. It's just a very nice change of pace.

I agree completely. Other big youtubers, like Markiplier, get really annoying with the screaming and stupid shit. Manly is always calm and this nice and soothing voice. Makes it alot easier to watch the game more like a movie or show.

As the mystery grows more complicated, it becomes more fascinating. It seems like Lila killed Tanya because she was jealous that William had friends. William's mother was clearly abusive, but how is she connected to Lila? What exactly is the Stranger in all this? It's almost tragic seeing William in that flashback, seeing that, while he's still incredibly awkward, he did seem remarkably more normal. Oh, and the game having a Manly palette is just awesome to see.

Well the more literal theory could be that Will has some form of identity disorder and Lila is one of his personalities? (Not trying to stigmatise mental illness or anything like that). Of course that’s a pretty surface level theory and there’s clearly a deeper meaning to this, but the abuse could’ve traumatised Will and triggered Lila as a result. Edit: Also Will seems to have massive gaps in his memory, like with his mom’s death and what happened on the night of Tanya’s ‘disappearance’. This makes me think that these are the moments where the Lila persona or tulpa takes over, which we see in action during Martha’s murder. Will’s natural reaction to the torso was way too full of horrified disbelief to be a face of ‘oh no you caught me’, it’s as if Will himself had just finished connecting the dots.

Quite enjoyed the party flashback, it was nice to get to know William a bit more. Though it's bittersweet to see him make a good impression with people as the "new kid", knowing that later on, Tanya is dead and everyone hates him D:

The Strength ending is interesting. i interpret it as Will having the ‘strength’ to subdue Lila and do the right thing and remember/confess to what he did. Lila is the beast who was behind the murder of Tanya, her lookalike. At this point I don’t see any reason why Will would, he seemed to like Tanya.

I’m still not sure if it’s Will winning or Lila winning. On one hand, it seems logical that after Will connects the dots himself he would turn himself in as he probably can’t lie(at least he’s never seen lying and I’m following the neurodivergent train of thought) but in the Detective Yu conversation Yu asked if it was Lila’s plan all along, which given Will’s weakness could mean the strength meaning is ironic.

He added that to appease producers, which is part of why the ending has such a bitter spoon-fed reciting of the explanation by the lawyer. It was meant to be derisive but instead was well received and has given people with DID (formally MPD 30+ years ago) a terrible shadow of a public image

the main character seems to have a harder time faking emotion than he does showing emotion He says he doesn't know how to show emotion, but what he doesn't know is how to show socially accepted emotions He's instinctively smiling when he shouldn't be. The fact he says he doesn't know how to show emotion when he clearly does, he just doesn't know how to NOT show the emotions he's feeling, shows that he thinks "showing emotion" is lying, that that's how you integrate yourself in society, and he's right because if he shows how he truly is it doesn't end well.

From my under standing it depends on one's beliefs and perspective. I think "yes but also no" could easily apply here. Like not every one believes aliens are real but to the people that claim to have been abducted by them , they are very real and often terrifying. "Lila" could actually be "Lillith" and just thought of some thing : if I remember correctly , some one stated that the dev or devs allegedly claim that Will is not suffering from a mental illness / that the game is not about that.... for all I know may be you are right and it is all just metaphores or what ever and the dev was just trolling or lying for some reason 🤔 ( about the game allegedly not being about some sort of mental illness and / or Will not having one ) But may be me and others are right and it isn't about that ( or it could some how be some thing else entirely )

@@blueninety i think a key part of this game is that it's open to lots of interpretation. i find it's really similar to realismo mágico, a genre popular in latin america. in this genre style, you can't really tell where the realism ends and the fantasy begins. is Lila some entity or demon that has possessed Will and is controlling his actions, or was Lila a part of Will the whole time, fabricated by his mind to cope with his trauma? just some thoughts. haven't finished this LP tho

Lawrence's congregation probably do not see Lila as Tanya specifically. She may look the same to them all but as different people if to each them she simply looks like "someone you love." How Lawrence taught them to communicate with her probably was part of this.

Oh god, I remember that! It's such a deeply disturbing interrogation to watch play out because it just makes absolutely no god damn sense the entire time. Like, you'd think he would break or something eventually but he just doesn't. It's like he never really acknowledged anything that happened so when he's confronted with it he just completely disconnected so as to continue to not acknowledge it. Showing emotion might not be an admittance of guilt necessarily, but it definitely is an admittance of acknowledgement and awareness.

William seems to be able to convey the necessary expressions to show the proper emotions at the party with a little help. I feel like the expressions sheet was needed for Lila

It's interesting, we've never seen or experienced Tanya other then Lila/Will talking about her and her friends worried about her. She's just. An interesting character. The flashback helps the story tremendously, there really was chemistry between Tanya and Will, as well as a lot of solidarity between them. And with us having the flashback we know a lot more about the severity of her being missing. And we know that not everything is a lie, most of Lila's lies are at least slightly based on the truth (the fight at the party) Very well done, kudos to the creators

The game is so fascinating to me, not only because of the general ... well everything - but because when I was younger I found the concept of "Tulpas" and I tried to "make" one myself. Of course I was not able to pull through, but it is interesting to see this game based on something... like that. Gone wrong, of course. edit: I put in the "only" in the first sentence, because it sounded like I didn't like the game for what it was.

For me this might as well be the spiritual successor to Twin Peaks... mysteries surrounding a highschool primadona's death/disappearance that might be more than meets the eye... some weird spiritual/supernatural happenings tied to the case ... yet this game also brings smth unique to the table esp for the lynchian-esque genre.. love it

When tanya talked about her problems with winning and falling it's just so relatable cause people seem to don't see how much efforts you put on your work to be good at school , so they just see your good work as a natural thing and your bad one as a terrible thing that will end this world

The way William is so normal and actually relatable as a character when you play the flashback to the party is insane to watch. It’s so mundane, just a character talking to strangers at a party. But the fact that it’s so mundane is in itself crazy. It’s nice to see the normal side of things

I love this game so much, the interpretations, the mystique, it makes you want to know more but at the same time it confuses you. Also side note: someone should make a game with this gameplay but it's normal and you are just an awkward teenager or young adult trying to navigate life, like a party, work, school etc. I wonder what kind of face would people make.

The writer of this game writes cops well. They really show that you should 𝗡𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 talk to a cop 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙘𝙞𝙧𝙘𝙪𝙢𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨. You can only talk yourself 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗢 trouble, but never 𝙊𝙐𝙏 of trouble.

It's funny that you kept calling him "Doctor Yu", as the protag in The Garden of Forking Paths is Doctor Yu Tsun. This game is certainly well-done. It wasn't really grabbing me much at first in the demo and in the early game, but once it gets going, it really shines.

Okay, the stranger looks a lot like his mother, and seems to see Tanya as someone "Familiar" which scared Will(?), this could mean that either Tanya was the childhood girlfriend Will once had or someone who looks like her.

Despite his criminal mind, this man is behaving well so he gets five minutes in the canoe

I feel really bad for William :( I think he might be on the spectrum or have social anxiety. He was so nice at the party, generally speaking. Lila/Being Normal Bates ruined everything for him.

Manly's voice acting is so perfect for these horror games

God, from the graphic choice to the rotoscope-esque animation style to the music selection to the layers of gameplay progression, this game just oozes the style of a loving crafter. This is really an aspiration for indie game achievement.

As far as I know it doesn’t thankfully, some of the endings are already obscure enough, but there might be an achievement for getting all of them? Haven’t done it myself yet so I’m not sure ^^

I like how he has subtly different voices for the different characters. It's not to the point where he's like "putting on a voice" or anything, but it's just enough that you can still tell which character the dialog belongs to, even when you're not looking at the screen.

I'm loving this playthrough so far, especially the face mechanic. At times it can look really goofy and make me laugh, but in the more spooky parts like in the interrogation or with the Stranger you can really see the uncanniness with them, especially in the way it moves. Mixed in with audio and it's got me feeling like something's gonna grab me, such an interesting game.

I would've thought the Manful Soul palette would use the colour red like Manly's scarf. I guess it would've been too similar to the palette that's used when Lila goes into murder mode. --- This game could provide some great reaction memes with William's expressions, lol.

Tanya’s talk with Will about the great expectations and failure hit way too close to home, even Will talking about forgiving his mom.

a thought about the moon ending- Lila becoming possessive over William and becoming jealous could actually be true, as Lila is often depicted with Tanya's face. maybe Lila shifted her existence to represent Tanya, or mimic her, knowing how much Will liked her? it would also give a (sort of) explanation to why Lila killed both Tanya and Martha.

1:16:30 literally scared me so much i had to pause it and like sit on my chair for a while. the buildup was so incredibly done, couldn't fathom playing this myself omg

after the first part i immediately bought the game and it blew my mind how interesting it is. really cool stuff.

I had like a crazy fever the whole time I’ve watched this series and it’s caused me to have weird dreams about the game because I’m constantly taking naps throughout the day. Honestly enhanced the game in a weird way.

1:06:57 This entire scene, including the interruption by the stranger, was so tastefully handled. Beautifully, even. I've seen similar scenes in tons of horror games, but this is the first time it's actually given me pause.

After this playthrough I'd be really interested to see Manly play "Return to the Obra Dinn" Not really a horror game but I just like listening to Manly deduce things. It shares the same style as "Who's Lila" and is a fantastic mystery about reliving the final moments of people before their death.

1000% this, such a phenomenal game

I think this has to be one of my favorite examples of psychological horror in recent memory. Really digging what your playthrough brings to its table

4:12-4:33 has me WHEEZING. Manly didn’t even initially react to being an easter egg, just as deadpan as usual!

The game is not weird per se. It is very clear the dev knows a lot about occult practices, Kabbala, demonic entities etc. Being "on the left side" could represent "left hand path". Then again this whole game is pretty much left hand path, except for the instances where William is in charge and actually behaving like an empathetic human being.

Ah... This game really is depressing. William and Tanya could genuinely be friends (if they don't wanna approach it romantically in the end), if it wasn't for Lila. His life was already hard enough, now to be a killer and to kill someone who could and would make a connection with you? Damn, that hurts.

Hey Manly. I got the game while waiting for you. So far I’ve gotten 11 of the tarot endings. Temperance is really hard because there’s no obvious “cue” for it(when his face starts shifting it keeps marking me as sad even when I make him “neutral”.) I read the steam discussion, though, and there were talks of “Wheeliam(?)” (Is that where you go back to talk to the machine after taking the wheel) and the tower ending, both of which I have no idea about. So I’m looking forward to the all secrets/ all endings run. Edit: thank you planets for helping me out. I originally thought of the changing date gimmick, but it didn't trigger because I didn't look at the painting. The Tower ending is very obviously triggered if you follow the instructions. I also finished Temperance. The game is finnicky and just doesn't give you what you want sometimes. If you think your route is correct, try a few more times and make small variations. I am now missing The Lovers and The Sun. The lovers: no idea how to do it. The sun: I know I am supposed to go to the sunshine cafe, but I don't know where to find the address. Those on the steam community board have hinted at twitter. I do not know the characters' twitter accounts. If anyone could tell me if I must guess or if it can be found in the game I will be very grateful. I've only gotten 6 of the 10 available palettes. Particularly the party one doesn't load for me. I don't know why.

SMALL VAGUE SPOILER/HINT ON HOW TO GET THE TOWER, just because it took me so long to find it myself (feel free to just avoid this if you want to figure it out yourself!): You have to change your computer date to a specific one you’re given, and then interact with a specific item in the house. It’s a really interesting ending, but the hardest one to find IMO! Good luck :D

@@Bluesit32 Good luck. If you want to know how to get Temperance, this is what I did to get it: 1) Get Martha's keys. 2) Do not go to the roof. Smile when you kill her. 3) Stay neutral during the entire interrogation. You will know it has happened when Hutchins says "it's like you're in a comatose state." I did all neutral runs before, which is why I was confused as to getting it. Sometimes it just doesn't work, so keep trying until it does. I recommend saving after the Hutchins sequence is over because there are some trick faces you must face afterwards.

"So you' rather hang out with some weird dude you just met, huh? MBH: "hey!... well, never mind, I am kinda weird" That shit killed me LOL

A streamer I watch does a lot of Nancy Drew/Sherlock Holmes-type games and she has a whole notebook reserved JUST for notes she takes while playing them. For a game like this one especially I totally get how keeping track of stuff through notes is important.

god, the graphics in this game are just too cool. I can't quite articulate exactly how cool it is because I stayed up all night watching Manly videos, so just pretend I started waxing poetic about how the simplicity complements the story's presentation or whatever. Also i just like ascii art.

With all this talk about tarot cards, I'm half expecting Will to either unlock the Ultimate Persona of that tarot card, fight a Stand user of that card, or gain two spirit hearts.

The Manful Soul palette being unlocked from an empty trashcan was great, but it happening at around 4:20 is the icing on the cake. The cherry on top.

I might just be slow, but it’s so cool when you perspective of the game changes to the other side of the screen, because you’re literally going to “the other side”/spiritual realm

Off topic but If you’re able to make your eyes look blurry and you look at William’s face, it looks like an actual face instead a pixelated one

Hmm, each bit of information revealed only begets further questions, it seems. The game apparently has undermined numerous prospective theories concerning who Lila is, and the remaining ideas appear to be a bit simplistic for so complex and cerebral a game such as this. Any single, solidified answer to the query might not be possible, and it could be quite disappointing if Lila was just simply a demon or something possessing Will, taking a form indistinguishable from a tulpa. I also find it interesting in this route that the card which incites this dialogue from Lila is the High Priestess, a card representing knowledge beyond the material realm and associating with the moon. The moon, as mentioned, is a repeated theme throughout the game, which, in the case of the High Priestess, symbolizes the feminine subconscious mind, perhaps relating to the independent consciousness of Lila that seems to exist in the subconscious of William. Additionally, I’m still inclined to believe in the significance of ego to this narrative, as the projection metaphor seems to aptly describe ego as the projection of oneself to the outside world. Thematically, this correlates to the player manipulating Will’s facial expressions to affect how others perceive him and the personality he outwardly projects. How Will and Lila’s egos intertwine and meld together is still uncertain to me, and I do hope that some element of the metaphysical remains in the definition of who Lila is. Regardless, the intrigue and momentum of this game and its pacing has persisted, and I agree that the grounding elements juxtaposed with the surreal make the experience far more impactful and meaningful. I don’t feel quite comfortable making further assessments as to the remainder of this game and its ultimate direction, I just hope that it’s sufficiently satisfying in the end. Also, admittedly, I've never seen a David Lynch film. I really need to get on that, don't I? I don't even know where to start!

William might be a murderer but at least he doesn't kick crows :)

this may be like a year old, but the talk about a conclusion being what would kill Lila makes me think that the player is actively feeding Lila by playing. Which is allowing her continued existence and control. our viewing of her world and her mystery is why she is going strong. when we stop the game, shes no longer being fed. she stops existing.

I know I’m late to this, but I thought it was very interesting that when you walked with Tanya after the party, you walked by two electrical towers that look just like the ones at the end of the river when you are in the boat.

I'm so glad that i looked up that whole tulpamancy/koomer&oguigi thing, it's easier to understand what's happening now that i searched for stuff a bit

Tbh i tried reading about it but it was still so confusing. I partially get what a tulpa is and what the premise of the story for koomer & oguigi is but i genuinely can't understand is as deeply as i want to. I genuinely hope i can still enjoy the game without deeply understanding the tulpa thingy.
