It seems Glenn's caused a rift in the fans. I personally hated how Carl's was just like any small side character.

At the times they happened, Glenn's was more impactful than Carl's. But, Carl's absence in the show became more impactful after Rick left the show. I liked 9, 10, and 11, but still having Carl in Rick's absence would have made the show carry on better.

Glenn’s death killed the show in the short term but there was still potential for the show to recover. However when Carl die it killed the long term future of the show because it has been obvious since season 4 that he was being set up as the replacement main protagonist after Rick, not to mention after the war with the saviours the comics had a perspective shift from Rick to Carl as the main character.

I voted for Glenn but I agree that Glenn’s death effected the audience more, while Carl’s effected the show more. Was devastated for both but would’ve never made me stop watching the show. Definitely added shock value. Love the polls…keep em coming! Would love to see one asking who read the comics vs not. Great video James!!

And my opinion, I feel like Carl’s death ruin The Walking Dead because he was the future of the show even Andrew Lincoln left the show mainly because of Carl’s death because Carl was the thing that kept him going without Carl. Rick Grimes didn’t really have a purpose anymore with the exception of Judith but still Carl what is the symbol of reeks old life before the apocalypse, but if Carl had to die I would’ve had him die protecting his sister that would’ve gave his death more meaning, and made more sense for his character to die. And to pass on the hat to her.

Just because the actor wanted his comics death himself, i'm almost sure i saw a interview in which Glenn said he's fine with his death, but Carl should've never died, he represented the future, he could've made TWD post Rick better, would've made the whisperers arc better and i could see him getting a spin off show after the main show ended.

For the timeliness argument, they did a huge time jump after Rick and the bridge explosion. When you said we had Old Man Carl in our mind that really nailed it for me. Well, see, here’s the thing. Because I read the comics, I feel like I have a differing opinion about the show from most others. The way I looked at it, Glenn (much as I loved him as a character) I always knew he was going to die. They hinted at it SO many times in the show. Glenn’s death, even in the comics, is such a pivotal moment to the maturation in Maggie’s story arc. So unless the show was going to drastically differ from its source material, that death was inevitable. Similar to Shane with Ricks character or Dale with Andrea’s. In terms of which death was more meaningful? I’d say Glenn because it symbolized so much for so many and set the events for an entire war in motion where as Carl’s death was just used as a crutch of a reason as to why Negan wasn’t killed. Carl’s death was more of a blow, though. To me, it will always represent the beginning of a dizzying spiral that sent not only the story they were trying to tell but the series as a whole into a panic. One thing we can all universally agree on. Glenn and Carl, 2 of the shows most impactful characters during their final moments. Both had deaths that didn’t need to happen. Daryl didn’t need to satisfy his blood lust by going after Dwight which got them captured in the first place, setting in motion an unfortunate set of events that culminated in a traumatic night in the woods they would never be able live down. Carl, suddenly transitioning from a Shane-like mentality trying to fearlessly (and even at times singlehandedly) take down Negan all throughout S7 to a Morgan/Eastman like mentality in S8 that would even seem to throw his own father for a loop. That same mentality that led to him getting bit for a character that wouldn’t do much for the story in his own right. Both were unnecessary and regrettable, but both have helped mold the still standing survivors into the characters we’ve come to love today.

@@TWDExplained There is something with Carl’s death though and it’s through something you’ve mentioned. Carl’s age and the actors growth did not align and that was a presenting problem for the show runners. Through all of the time jumps they ended up doing. Through all of the remixes to the story, characters jumping ship to spin-offs and such. Couldn’t they have worked their way around whatever was wrong? Normally on the show if an actor has something going on, they’d just give their character a backseat or find a reason for them to go missing until the issue is/can be solved. It just doesn’t seem like a good reason to just kill Carl off. It had to be something more personal going on because if that’s the case Rick should be dead. Daryl, Carol, Michonne, Heath(who knows), Judith, Jerry. That list can go on and on as well lol

Glenn because it still fuel the storyline. Carl long gone now. And never bought into this "it was supposed to end with Carl" nonsense. The show is the show. And on overall deaths, I always expected major deaths as these were characters trying to survive in the post apocalyptic world. My thoughts during season 1 was if the show went anywhere, which it did, that most of the season 1 cast would be gone, which happened. The different showrunners have always said over the years "nobody is safe." Thanks for rhe mention by the way.

It doesn’t surprise me that Glenn got most votes. Even though I have not know about this show very long it doesn’t take much to realize how much of impact Glenn death had on people. I think killing two people at Negan’s line was over kill. I don’t think we needed both especially since it was so brutal. It was a lot to take! I think Carl’s death effected me more because I knew he lived & had family with Sophia in comic and Glenn was suppose die by Negan. If I didn’t know that I may have thought differently but I did. I had hard time with Heusal’s death too even though that is how he died in comic. I just really missed his humor & demeanor. That could of been from Scott Wilson’’s performance. I think Glenn, Carl & Heursal were hardest for me. I always wonder if I would be as obsessed with this show as much if Daryl’s character was not created or killed & Carol was not givin chance to continue since they are my favs. Hmmmm???

Yeah it's hard to try and think how we would feel about the show if a character was missing, died earlier, etc. In the comic instead of Daryl, Rick's right hand was Tyreese - even though they had their differences and fought in the comic also. Abe took that role after Tyreese died.
