Theres a 10 year gap between when crosby came in the league in 2005 and mcdavid in 2015. Both of them are the best players of their generation. Id say McDavid is more of special player because his skating and how fast he thinks the game, there are other players whose skating is similar to mcdavids but the difference is mcdavid is the only one whose feet hands and mind can all work at high speeds.

I’m a huge Penguins fan, and Crosby fan. I can tell you that right now at this point in their careers, McDavid is a better player. However, I do believe Crosby is still an extremely elite player in this league. His production has dipped slightly but he has adjusted to play a different style of game. McDavid will go down as one of the best players of all time, just like Crosby will. I don’t think it’s so much about comparing who is better (Similar to Kobe vs Lebron, or MJ) but just appreciating the amount of skill and style both players have that bring people in to become fans.

Crosby has been so dominant in different facets of the game. He's honed his craft and is considered elite or near the top in so many different asepcts of the game. The mohawk turns, backhand shot, deflections, puck protection, passing, hockey IQ, strong shot, and he's got an insance work ethic that helped him get great at these things. I want to see where McDavid is at as he gets closer to 30. I don't think his ability to generate off the cycle and in dirty areas is as good as Crosby. Generating off the rush, sure, McDavid wins, but Crosby was also dangerous in that capacity as a young buck. I just think that today's players are getting faster and faster that McDavid's greatest asset won't hold up long into his 30s. Crosby is still the same killer robot going on 35 years old.

The point being is the Great Ones kill penalties. Another fun fact for those who think past the narrative, 87 is featured in the "Conn Smythe Shift" video...as the primary victim. The Kid was dusting snow off his pants more than once during a 5 on 3. He wasn't better than the generation that included 40, 5, 55, and 30 on that shift.

Much easier to put Gretzky out on the PK in an era where stick technology was limited, and he could outskate 95% of the league. Now, even the weakest shooters can hit 80 mph with ease on their shots, and the worst skaters in this era would keep pace with Gretzky given the benefit of an extra man on their side. What happened to 40, 5, 55 and 30 one year later though? Aw man, they got the upperhand on a 20 year old kid, and then got beat by him a year later... and never got back to the finals again.

Gretzky was well known for being a few steps ahead. Also consider that the top hockey talent was concentrated amongst 21 teams in Gretzky's day. Gretzky would do just as well in this era as he would have strength and conditioning coaches, nutrition, medical and other things the modern skater does. Detroit should have won 2009 but all the leagues favoritism toward Pittsburgh was solidifying as the fat flightless ones had 4 top 2 picks and a number 5 while Detroit had picks 171, 210 and 257 on their top lines. High picks like 5 and 30 were not top 50 picks. Please go watch "The Conn Smythe Shift" and tell me how great 87 is at 5 on 3 and picking his panties off the ice. For reference the average top line All-Star player will have the puck on their stick a total of about 30 seconds in the entire game, with McDavid I’m not sure the exact number but it’s gotta be different it just seems like he always has it. I grew up as a huge Crosby fan tried to play like him when I was out on the ice but McDavid is taking the game to a whole new level ,his skills are so ridiculous it doesn’t even make sense how he moves out there

At this point in their careers, Crosby is in his mid 30's so of course McDavid is a better purely offensive player being 10 years younger. However when it comes to many other aspects of the game, Conor still isn't there....and maybe never will. Defensively, puck protection, grinding down below the goal line...and most importantly - leadership. Sid has led his team to multiple cups, not to mention Gold medal...whereas McDavid hasn't shown the ability to inspire his team to higher levels.

As a penguins fan, i do believe that Crosby was the best player of his time from about 07-19. But, now McDavid has taken that spot. I grew up in the crosby/ovechkin era but its just that the game of hockey is evolving and so are the players. Yes, Crosby was the best for about a decade and a half but Crosby is getting older and closer to his careers end and McDavid is in his prime, probably not even yet. I have no doubt that once Mcdavid gets closer to the end of his career, there could be another player whos actually better than him, for example, right now in the 2023 draft there is this kid named 'Bedard' and right now as far as i know hes being considered one of the more exciting prospects in recent history. I still believe that Crosby is still one of the best players in Current NHL and in NHLs history and i also believe that Mcdavid for sure will be too... he pretty much already is.

I would also throw Ovechkin in there as Shaq, could compete for mvp every year in his prime, most dominate goal scorer and has a huge physical prescience on the ice. Just wanted to also comment how much I appreciate these reactions to hockey but especially McDavid, because take it from me, a person who’s also a complete sports nerd(I Watch 100 hockey games a year about 60 to 70 basketball games, a dozen football game, MLB playoffs and a bit of a Fairweather soccer fan,I’ve also played hockey and basketball my entire life love both sports hockey slightly my number one but I really do love basketball) McDavid is the number one athlete in the world right now and it’s completely getting slept on by mainstream media outside of Canada, The last time a professional sports athlete separated themselves from the number two like mcdavid has would probably be Tiger Woods if you consider golfa sport(I don’t I see it as tremendously skilled but not a sport). , Certainly the last time a top team sport athlete. Has separated themselves from the competition the way McDavid has was probably prime Michael Jordan. LeBron’s great but you always felt like except for a few years of his career there were always a few guys in a league that could challenge him for MVP any given year,That’s not the case for McDavid. Crosby’s career is nearly done and McDavid already has twice as many scoring titles. I don’t see anyone in MLB or American football that’s dominant on the level of McDavid I think you could argue Giannis in basketball is maybe on that level but trust me he’s not the cerebral athlete McDavid is. (Btw I love Giannis,Will always root for him and think that what he’s doing for sports in general is absolutely great staying in a small market and showing up-and-coming superstars that there’s more legacy to be had if you win in a small market, then building superteams and piling on luxury cities, I do hope some of this mentality will rub off on other superstars across sports like McDavid when it comes time to potentially resign) I saw Hockeys popularity take noticeable spike around 2006 when the last generational talent Crosby and Ovechkin were drafted in the league, it pains me to say it as an Oilers fan but the truth is if McDavid played for any American team hockey would take a quantum leap in popularity in the states just cause he really is that dude he’s so entertaining/dominant. The only reason McDavid isn’t getting credit as at least in the argument for a top three athlete in the world right now is because 1. Hockeys less popular to begin with, and 2. He plays in small market Edmonton, where even the Canadian media wants to ignore us. There’s one goal of McDavid you reacted to but I’d like to add a bit of context to it was a breakaway goal against the flames where he picks up the park from a standstill In his own end and just accelerates all the way down the ice by the time he hits the halfway point of the ice he’s clocked out going 38.5 km per hr, So basically 10 km above the speed limit in a school zone, unless you’re counting NASCAR or Formula One no athlete has ever performed their sport at the speed that he is it’s really incredible, I know it’s on skates but the guys going significantly faster than prime Usain bolts top speed

Significantly faster than prime. Usain bolts top speed but it’s really like if you would imagine a competition where you were to say here Usain Bolt you’re gonna do your hundred metre dash but you’re gonna have to perfectly control a ball dribbling or a hockey stick and ball and cross them over at top speed by the way when you get to that hurdle maintain complete control don’t look at the ball while going that incredible speed, That’s really what’s so impressive About what McDavid’s doing he’s in complete control breaking ankles while going 10 km over the speed limit in a school zone

I respect both but crosby is still the best well rounded player his puck protection to his edgework to his deflections and tips and his general knowledge and iq and even defense. Where you see mcdavid his skill is crashing the net with speed and drawing the goalie too far in his net i agree mcdavid is talented without a doubt but if we are talking about the well roundedness of a player its crosby without a doubt.

crosby is better all time and still plays amazing today even for his age. Mc david owns the league right now and he's been better for the past couple years. But crosby has dominated and played well for all of his career and he's owned the league along with ovenchkin for a decade and he's multiple rings. Crosby is definitely better no question but Mcdavid is a up and coming player who could maybe take that spot

Id take McDavid (at his height) to win a scoring title. Id take Crosby (at his height) to win a championship. I think McDavid is the better pure offensive force and Crosby is the better all around 200ft hockey player.

The next must react to players are Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Connor Bedard and Trevor Zegras. MacKinnon is undoubtedly a top 4 player right now behind only McDavid, Matthews and Makar. He’s probably the fastest player in the league when he gets the puck. Watch his top 10 career highlights and then look up his goal vs St. Louis this year because it’s too recent to be on his highlights but is probably his best goal ever. Cale Makar is only 23 and is already the best defenceman in the league. He’s basically the McDavid of defence it’s insane. MacKinnon and Makar are both on the same team right now and currently have a 1-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup Finals. Makar has the potential to be the best defenceman ever. Connor Bedard is the next up and coming generational player. Every 10 ish years there’s a prospect that starts to gain attention from like 10 years old and up. The last two were Crosby and McDavid. Bedard is still only 16 and is too young to get drafted yet. Trevor Zegras might have the best puck skills in the league. He was just a rookie this year but his highlights will make you laugh with what he can do with the puck. He’s not on the same level as the other guys and likely never will be he just has insane puck skills.

Yup Crosby has been around long time, but he’s also done a lot, has a few rings already, gonna go down as one of the greats. McDavid is just half way, hasn’t been blessed with the greatest head office to build a good team around him like Pittsburgh did for Crosby.

McDavid is younger and faster but Sid is amazing. Sid has 3 Stanley Cups, 2 Gold medals in hockey, 2 World Cups. McDavid has yet to win any of those. Sid is more of a playmaker than McDavid. He’s great at possession and passing where as McDavid’s speed is his weapon. You just shouldn’t underestimate Sid. He can do it all.

Replying late, but Crosby is 36 now and is having one of his best years, even if the team isn’t. He has more goals this year than McDavid (although fewer assists) and he even got a hat trick.

Perfect current NBA/NHL player comparisons would be: Sidney Crosby-Lebron (undoubtedly the goats of their generation, mid 30’s and still dominating) Ovechkin-Steph Curry (greatest shooters/scorers of all time) Mcdavid-Giannis (young with tons of potential, already the best in the league)

Crosby #87 born in 1987 McDavid #97 born 1997. Overall talent both off the charts. Crosby yes past his prime. Speed goes to McDavid but hockey IQ to Crosby. Team play also to Crosby. Both in prime? MVP to Crosby…he’ll bring the cup. As of yet McDavid no cup. Crosby sees the whole ice, knows where everyone is. Both awesome so the debate will go on.

McDavid is in his prime and Crosby is probably a couple of years from retiring. I don’t find the comparison even fair this far into Crosby’s career. And you know what Crosby has done that McDavid has proven (so far) he can’t do? Lead your team to Lord Stanley’s cup. - a Rangers fan.

OK great. Now you need to react to CALE MAKAR. The best defenseman in the league. He is like Mcdavid, but playing defense. His team ( Colorado) lead 2-0 the stanley cup final mainly because of him. The dude is a modern day "Bobby Orr". ( Orr is consider to be the best defenseman of all time. )
