Who remembers the Nuneaton Drags.
The Nuneaton drags happened on Sundays when the line from Birmingham to Rugby was closed and trains were dragged via Water Orton to Nuneaton.
In the early days you would get all sorts of locos on the front like 58s, but then they started to use just class 47s, and after that with the Virgin 57s.

If only I had been born 6 years earlier so I could see the beauty of these machines back in the day. At least they have been captured on film for me to see. Either way, great vid!

Yes spent many Sundays behind class 50s, 56s, 58s, 37s, 47s from the mid 80s to the early 90s. I lived in Nuneaton so it was a bonus. You could get a normal return ticket to Birmingham & run up and down all day as the tickets were never checked between Nuneaton / New Street with it being diverted.

OK Mike, will sort another for the weekend, I need to catch up with your last two uploads.
Great footage Antman09ful1, Back in the 1980's it seemed to be every Sunday the Euston trains would have a variety of locos hauling them to/fro Nuneaton, as mentioned below we would see class 20's (often twinned up)58's, 56's 47's, I am sure a couple of times we got rerouted via the Aston-Stetchford loop--we would leave toward Wolverhampton and turn off at Soho junction and go from there. At New Street it would be a guess what loco would be hauling and if it was unusual that ride to Nuneaton got crowded! I would stay on until Rugby and come back, so much extra fun with a WMPTE Daytripper ticket! Happy Days :-)

Yes mate they were very happy days indeed, I wish we still had loco hauled trains to travel on instead of these plastic units. These days they stick a bus on if there is any diverts around the Birmingham area. Thank you for your interest in my latest old unseen video.

@@antman09ful1 by 74 the diverts may have ended, I just can't remember that much detail of my early (wasted!) teen years. It probably wasn't 1972 because that was the year of my first summer Railtourers, it may then just have been 1973. I remember it being very hot one Sunday and the Nuneaton panel failing with us stuck just outside. We sat for a very long time - the 47 had no ETH so everybody was baking. I was hanging out of the window for most of the journey anyway so I already had my spot. There were very few enthusiasts around which looking back is quite surprising.

@@antman09ful1 Those 1970s Railtouring days were superb - no cares & no brain back then! Hopefully we'll be back to normal next year so I'll try to copy a few of my Railtourer days over the spring, summer or autumn (led by weather & family commitments) because that will be 50 years since my first ticket and I can see what's changed. A typical day in '72 was from hometown to New St, a quick trip to Solihull and back for a Western/Class 52 journey. Then possibly to Wolves/Shrewsbury-Hereford (Class 37 + 3 coaches because of DMU shortage)/ Worcester/Gloucester/New St (to check on the evening Western)/possibly Wolves & back (Class 81/86/85) then back home. There were a couple of side trips back then to Reading, Bristol and London Euston using Excess Fare tickets bought from the Guard. Me a youngster leaving home at 8am and returning at 10pm including a trip to London - no mobiles, no support & just enough cash for a cuppa or 2 and Underground tickets to Waterloo, Liverpool St., Kings X & Paddington
Had 20s,31s,37s,40s,50s,56s,58s on the nunny drags. Made the week after a mad week on the skegs. All so missed 😂😂
