Rewatching with you seems to prove how much better Khabib is than Islam in grappling. As I've always noticed that Khabib would always make sure that he's resting when he's on his opponent. Khabib was always making his enemies carry him. Which is why you always see Khabib's opponents to look tired and worn out even in mid fights.

His wrist control and leg control both at the same time made him special. Alex would not pass 2rd with khabib and bjs pressure. Something Islam should work on and I’m sure he will get much better than his previous fights

that’s why i never agree everytime people says Islam is a better version of Khabib. not only on grappling, Khabib’s stand up game is very underrated, yes it didnt look as proper and as beautiful as islam’s but there was a reason why his face stay ‘handsome’ after every fight.

People think Islam fought a random FW. He fought the P4P #1 and this is how a fight between 2 best in the sport look like. One sided domination is rare and it is bound to be highly competitive. If anything, Islam really impressed me because it was his first defence, no Khabib in the corner, bad weight cut, his streak on the line yet he showed heart. Kudos to Alex too he really hung in with a Dagestani. Rn, Islam has snatched a 22 fight win streak and a 11 fight win streak in just 4 months. That’s beyond impressive

before the fight nobody gave Volk that respect though... next time Islam shouldn't completely dismiss his opponenet 90% of the time he does media stuff, same to Islams fans. If they gave Volk the respect then more people would be acknowledging Islams great performance. ITs frustrating how much MMA fans change their tunes when fights don't go the way they expected.

The knee is the biggest knuckle on your body only seconded by elbows.

As a boxing fan, there is usually more bias in commentary & crowd (depending on lead promoter). It seems to affect judges as much as fans. Turning volume off and objectively watching each round will often lead to different scoring

He focused almost entirely on Islam in the breakdown, and chucked in a quick volk opinion here and there. It was weird, he was so focused on one fighters mistakes and not the other fighters success. He talked about Islam's knees, but not Volks hooks to the body, which had a huge effect on Islam's tank.

Board members giving rankings based on their feelings, thoughts etc is doing the sport and fans zero favors, it's hurting everything. Islam vs Volk ONLY happened because the only thing Volk had that Islam wanted was the pfp ranking. If we knew beforehand what we know now, maybe this fight wouldn't have happened, and maybe this will stop other crazy competative fights in future. Who knows.

I really love these break downs! They're so informative, and especially because of who you are as an MMA multiple weight champion AND a wrestler who's an Olympic gold medalist! So many people don't appreciate wrestling and grappling, they just want to see striking . Also I think if Khabib was in Islam's corner it would've made a big difference as far as the wrestling is concerned. Him coaching Islam through all the positions on the ground is really a big difference IMO. 1 of the things you pointed out that Islam didn't do was take out Volk's hands as support, which Khabib almost never missed himself. I hope Khabib shows up for Islam in the rematch.. but honestly with all the Hooker allegations and BS I wouldn't blame Islam if he didn't want to do the rematch now. He won this war of a fight and instead of respect all he gets is a bunch of BS. He said right away he'd give Volk the rematch, but after Volk and his team being sore losers and throwing out allegations with 0 proof and stuff.. I wouldn't blame him if this soured his whole experience to the point where he doesn't want to go through it again. Also I thought Volk said he was putting up the P4P #1 and Islam was putting up his belt? If Volk won even by 1 pt he'd get the belt regardless of how dominant the win was, on-top of that Islam agreed to do it in Volk's backyard.. Dude the fact is you are spot on with your whole analysis. UFC and Volk agreed, from the time of at least Abu Dhabi, when Islam knocked Charles Oliveira down with a strike and then immediately submitted him on the ground to become the UFC Undisputed Lightweight Champion of the World, that Volk would fight him with the p4p #1 ranking as Volk's stake in the fight - Khabib called for it from the very first moments and not a soul dissented. UFC endorsed the result in 4 separate Tweets after the event. The media and journalists who control the p4p lists are spineless. This was an understood deal between two men and endorsed by the organization organizing and promoting the fight, it's bullshit that Islam isn't #1 p4p after that fight. Volk knew what he was training for all camp. To say Volk won the fight is to say all 3 professionally trained judges don't know as much as you at your armchair behind the computer. It's absurd

Do you really think that Cejudo’s job was to point at every single strike each fighter has thrown? He only focused on the significant/heavy ones. But Volk landed a lot more light strikes. Light, but still strikes nonetheless. Stop being ignorant. But I gotta admit that Islam did edge the Win though. Did he outstrike Volk? Not really in my opinion when it comes to numbers. And he messed up big time in terms of wrestling, even Henry admitted.

Volk came in an OUTPERFORMED EXPECTATIONS. We're all giving him his flowers for that. But when you zoom out and look at this fight objectively, not who the underdog is, or what we thought was gonna happen, or any of that. The judging. The card, the control time, take downs, who was imposing who's will, dmg taken, the science of the fight is still the end all be all. People are blown away by Volks performance so they want to give him the W in a close fight. That's ALL this is about.

It could be, and people can make a point about the scoring system, but with the current one, Islam won and that's not up for debate.

Makhachev won round 1,2,3,4 and lost the last minute of round 5. Lol. We say Alex is sooo good that Makhachev didnt dominate him. Thats a testament of how good Makhachev is! Lol Volk has no neck to choke, no knees to trip...small man with amazing fundamentals and strength.

Anyone notice Volks corner at the end of round 3. He asked how the round went. They said better. Then he asked did I loose the first 2. And the NZ coach Eugene said “we will win the next 3” going into the 4th. In that moment Volk was prob thinking what round is it 😂

The crowd makes a huge difference in how you perceive a fight. It's like when Conor fights, the crowd goes crazy almost every time he throws a punch so you feel like something amazing is happening. I remember in the first Diaz fight, every time he touched Diaz there was a huge roar from the crowd but watching again afterwards you realize how many times Nate tagged Conor but there was no reaction from the crowd. Same thing in this fight, even when Volk was on his back, being totally controlled, unable to get up or improve his position, just because he was talking shit the crowd was going crazy like he was doing something amazing, when in fact he was losing the round.

I think the crowd was going crazy cause Islam kept saying he will take him into the deep waters and finish him but seeing Volk smile in those situations and still got to his feet was unbelievable. He may have lost on control time and points but Alex didn't tap and didn't panic under that Degastani pressure. It was like watching a god become human.

Whey did terrible job. The only way for Volk to win a fight against Islam is to knock him unconscious.

As great as Volk's performance was. He actually had advantages: 1. Volk had the crowd support, every punch or take down defense was celebrated by the crowd which induces bias. 2. Volk was the smaller, hence had an easier weight cut. 3. The pressure was on Islam to win, he put his belt on the line. And was considered the favorite. 4. Islam just only faced off against Charles very recently. And had a bad weight cut process. 5. Volk's held off Islam for 5 rounds, and somehow it seemed like a moral victory because of the under-dog status. This is a testament to Islam's greatness. 6. Home advantage meant Volk had better rest and support. Islam was the "enemy" on home territory, hence out of his comfort zone. 7. Volk's height actually makes it more difficult for Islam to wrestle. Volk's strategy was also just to stuff takedowns by just grabbing/pulling Islam's hands/gloves for dear life. 8. Khabib was not in Islam's corner. This is actually a big deal. It's like Volk not having his closest trainer around for the process. Islam is getting criticized now, because he is unfortunately not from a favorable race/nationality on the global stage.

A good and fair breakdown. I scored it on the night 3-2 maybe 4-1 but either way I had Islam winning. I also think he should now be P4P as that was what was on the line, Champ Champ for P4P but the people have spoken and decided against it.

Volk stepping up to take on a man not many people want to fight, while Islam travelled a long distance to fight in a climate he is not used to without the two longest running coaches in his corner to take on P4P champ.

I just re-watched the fight. Islam actually won the first four rounds. Landed some big shots in the 5th too, just lost that last sequence. Islam was right in his tweet. Thought it was a lot closer when I watched it live. The crowd and the commentary and just the pure shock that Volk was doing so good...definitely swayed me. Also, it was definitely not the most competitive fight in UFC history. Closer fights have happened. Its up there though.

Alex is too elusive and strong to open up for an elbow. The knees were a safer option for damage. Also islam may not be good at it.

a successful takedown is not merely a changing of position, but the establishment of an attack from the use of the takedown. unified rules of mixed martial arts. Under these guidelines, scoring in each round is based on effective striking/grappling, effective aggressiveness, and - in the case of the UFC - Octagon control. When it comes to effective striking, essentially, judges are looking for damage. Like the standup game, effective grappling is also about inflicting harm and not about just wrestling a competitor to the mat and holding on for dear life. When it comes to aggressiveness, a fighter can’t rack up points simply by moving forward and getting picked apart by a man with better footwork and technique. A UFC fighter needs to make the most of that pressure. Chasing after an opponent with no effective result or impact should not render in the judges assessments, the unified rules state. The least important criterion - although viable nonetheless - is Octagon control. I really doubt you knew any of this, objectively by the criteria there's no way Islam won round 4. Volk out struck him 6-4 in significant strikes on the feet. Islam scores points for getting a takedown and back take. Islam did barely any damage with the few punches he threw no significant strikes no submission attempts and thats not up for the debate check the stats no significant strikes no submissions. Volk didn't land anything significant strikes either but he did land enough punches to open a cut on Makhachev's eye. Volk won on effective striking and aggression, Islam's points for effective grappling for getting the takedown and back take don't mean as much per the rules because he didn't use the position to cause damage and wasn't as aggressive as Volk. Octagon control doesn't come into play because Volk won on effective striking and aggression per the official criteria more important than Octagon control.

Makhachev beats the no 1 P4P in his own turf, Australia infront of his fans. Alex maybe shorter but he has a longer reach than Makhachev. Makhachev won the fight on the feet. Makhachev displayed his superiority on the ground by taking down Volkanovski four times in the fight.

Great analysis by Henry Cejudo.. I was on the fence about round 3, but this changed my mind. Good fight by both guys, now they need to run it back.

The judges did a better job than either of the fighters. They were spot on and the fight was damn close.

This is such a dumb take , no one forced Islam to fight at lightweight, this is the weight class he chose, Islam chooses to fight at a deficit. If anything, volk deserves the praise because he chose to fight in a weight class that he is smaller in. So Islam deserves less praise as he fights in a lower weight class where he tries to be bigger .

Round 2 and 3 are both very debatable depending how the fight is scored (we know from inconsistencies in judges, fights are not always scored how they should be). While you could say Islam clearly won 1, 2 & 4 and 3 was close, you could very easily argue Volk won 2, 3 and 5. Was a close fight. Don’t blame delusion, blame MMA judging for people having different views

Wow, I enjoyed your analysis of this very highly contested fight. I've already watched this fight twice using slowmo to see things better before watching your video and didn't think I needed to see it a third time to figure out what really happened, but you still kept me riveted to this vid, because you are dropping some pearls here.

The only mistake is that makhachev in last round focused so much on wrestling and looked to a submission. He became exhausted at the last minute wich gave the advantage to Volk to look as a winner.

Well he also has 12 less hours to rehydrate than normally due Australia rules. That might effect his strength and stamina.

Thank you for the detailed analysis. It is really great to hear the technical insights of a great and smart champion with excellent grappling skills himself. Great insights for the real fans and a way for us to learn more about the sport. I used to practice full contact stick and knife (Pekiti Tiresia Kali) at MIT and also studied a bit of judo but I really don't know much grappling. To me it is extremely high level, technical and complex so I really appreciate this analysis. Also massive props to cejudo for giving unbiased critique even though he is a friend of Khabib. Very professional.

I'm glad you said something about Islam's composure. Seeing the breakdown without crowd definitely makes you see Islam was doing more but his composure makes him look so bad. Like the putting his hands up and backing up, the looking terrified up at the clock, the backing up into a cage causing yourself to trip, etc made him look really bad and not like p4p.

I had it 3-2 and thought one of the scores was off but after rewatching it.. I think it was 4-1 Islam. All the hits that i thought dropped Islam were slips or not clean strikes. I think Islam embarrases Volk with a proper weight cut in a rematch. Volk has thrived on his gas tank. He may actually be overrated. Dude used to walk around 200 pounds. Chad Mendes was kicking his ass but ran out of gas. Everyone else he's fought at Feather Weight can't handle his intensity yet he rarely knocks people out. I think Yair's hits hit way harder than anyone he's faced and i think Yair is going to smash him.

My brother is the biggest volk fan and was really bias during the fight. He was yelling for volk the whole time. And everyone their was agreeing w him. But when I watched in real time I had Islam winning it tbh. Yea volk is know for his insane striking but Islam really was banging w him Fr. While also wrestling w him. Volk did have impressive take down defense but Islam also impressed me w his striking. He rocked volk multiple times. I would islam is a better striker than khabib but khabib is a better wrestler. Henry is as biased as it gets for this fight. He works with eagle fc, as well as khabib and khabibs team.

so far this breakdown of henry is the best and i realized that the judges credivilty and toughness job were no doubt that they really did a good job....this fight shows how judges has a better eyesight and education in judging a fight,sometimes we always question the result of the judges and took blame on them and most often they couldnt depend themselves which unfair to thier profesion and family...anyway thank you mr cerudo for a very educational presentation and breakdown now i am at peace you help a lot to the mind of those in doubt....keep up yhe good job....

I watched the fight again and I know what you mean about composure. It looked like Islam was rushing to get a takedown and being careless about the positions, which Alexander was easily able to adjust for in the moment.

Great review you can tell Islam had a horrible weight cut he didn't look rehidrated! Look back at him against Charles his body looked a lot better. Plus the hight of Volk he was really struggling with. Hard fought for both man

Like the breakdown. I feel Islam transition was probably hampered by the height of Alex. His lack of transitioning quicker seemed to be hampered by being able to gain control. I think Alex size but as you said his heart along with him carrying more weight previously played a huge part as far as confidence goes on Alex side. Volkanovski's fighting abilities are more or less predicated on his insane cardio and motor. When he has something like that to rely on, if certain things aren't going his way, he can look unbeatable against a lot of guys that might be bigger than him. He's an example of both an amazing fighter and an even better athlete. Great analysis.

The problem with trying to take volks hand post out is that with a short legged opponent it’s hard to control the legs while reaching for his arms. It’s gonna be hard to control his short legs with your legs so you can transition to the upper body. As soon as you let go of his legs to reach for the post he’s gonna easily extract his legs and advance to a much better position.

I'm a firm believe that Khabib in Islams corner makes the difference. Islam is so damn good, but Khabib has that fight IQ and fight assesment from the corner that Islam needs to use his full potential in his fights. If Khabib is in Islams corner I believe he is unstoppable.
