    Thx for the review! I had both Daiwa and Shimano, here in Brazil we fish a lot of peacock bass, and they are much more strong then large mouth bass, and after a few seasons, I started to note that the daiwa gears, lasts longer, and on Steez and Zillions, I don't know why, but after disassemble, degreasing and reassemble a couple times, they always seem smoother... can you explain this?? Thx again, and sorry for my poor english.

    Thank you for all the informative videos. I have a questions with regards the Steez A TW. I bought one couple months ago and used it about 10-12 times but just yesterday I notice oil leaking out of the gear box side. Last time I used it I notice my casting distance was way shorter and today I notice when I turn the handle it sounds "grainy". Any ideas? Thank you.

    The difference in colour between main gears is probably just due to different grades of Alloys as opposed to special coatings. I know from experience that a clear anodised 7 series aluminium will turn a slight yellow/gold colour while most 6 series will stay it's natural grey colour.

    regarding the missed coating on the Mg frame, i'm going to guess it's a corrosion inhibiting e-coat, it looks too thin to be a powder. I will guarantee that the 2 indents with no coating at all is where the frames are held in a jig during the e-coat process. I've been in industrial coatings for a while now and I can't buy anything without first scrutinizing the finish. The second step is figuring out where/how it was hung, even if it's a blender or toaster. I can often find the hook mark or shadow in the finish from how it was hung.

    Yea i actually agree with you mostly. I just love fishing gear iam addicted to buying it. I don't think lews is better than diawa and shimano. I think they are better for the bass industry but that is speaking $100 to $350 overall. If you look at price peformance build quality. There rods are fantastic light and strong. Now i dont know about the cheap stuff. I also know that the slx probably took the spot form the lfs for $99 king. I think lews customer service is great also. But don't get me wrong i love my diawa and shimano. I wish lews would break out the bucks and build there own parts. I totally agree with you on abu Garcia. I love there vintage reels. But there new stuff is all cheap feeling. There really expensive for what youre getting. There charging 3 and $400 for reels it seems the others are charging $250 to 300. But i know lews shares with abu and Johnny moris and some of the bass pro stuff. But i think lews puts more effort into them. Just my opinion. But hey man i love your videos. Hey do you clean gear. I can send you some high end reels to review and clean. Just let me know.

    Great video as always. The Antares is just outdated. It was released in 2012 or so and Shimano has not updated it for the US market. Honestly I'm not sure if they will unless they decide to bring back DC reels. I see the Metanium MgL as their top of the line low profile stateside. I wasn't surprised the Steez won this match up.

    I’ll ask again, how do you get ANY distance out of elastic? I’ve tried since they came on the scene. I just bought some of the worms and have NO expectations of throwing them more than maybe 50 ft. I’m just wondering. I find that MOST of the casting energy is absorbed by the incredible stretch no matter how I rig them ( the whole soft plastic gamut). Maybe I’m too feeble. Also, people that become stagnant in their selection of equipment companies ( not you or I) miss out on some very useful tackle. My tackle (removed by thieves) was eclectic. I had some of everything. Our 5500s and 6500s worked fine on muskies and anything smaller. I certainly appreciate your take on tackle.

    Hi. You are really making great videos. It is very wondering. For max brake Abu advertise 17lbs for mgx 2. You are saying this is about 6 lbs and rather bfs reel. I'm about to make a decision of What to buy. I believe in General Infiniti spool Braking system by Abu is better than shimanos SVS. I wanted to go with Abu cause of better casts, but ceirtanly 6 lbs of main brake is not enough for my application.

    I couldn't agree more with the Antares being out of sync with bass fishing reels. I feel like they tried to make it be too many things at once, an in turn alienated it & made it not a perfect fit for anything. I feel the best iteration of the Antares/ Calais is when there was a 100 size & 200 size. (Especially with the asv deep spool option for the 200 size). It just made perfect sense. It'll be interesting to see what Shimano does going forth with the Antares line.

  • @TackleAdvisors

    I'll be reviewing them post icast. Not sure how you can consider lews the best. They don't even make any of their own products. Daiwa /shimano..... Everyone else. I used to think Daiwa was best in the baitcaster world and shimano owned the spinners.. Now Daiwa for the fw market stole the spinning market right out from under shimano. At every price point. And shimano is now keeping pace with Daiwa and their baitcasters. Although the 2 slx reels coming could really move the needle. Abu spinners suck... No way round that. I have the mgxtreme and a premier. The mgx is rough and the premier the ar fails repeatedly. I will say though I was pretty impressed how the lews felt at the classic. Felt better in hand than their cousins in the next booth over

    Nice vid, even though some of the reel talk was unclear. I purchased the mgxtreme2 for $250 & even that price i didnt think it was worth it, sold it the next day. AND no way id put that heavy azz antares on my nrx rods! I have 2 steez sv tw that i use more less for finesse stuff & metanium mgls for jig/big worm fishing. I'd say the metanium mgl would be a good alternative to the antares & the shimano aldebaran 50 a better option than the mgxtreme2. I really wanted to like the abu, but its been about my 5th time trying a high end reel that wasn't daiwa/shimano & being dissapointed.

    Get the feeling the Antares/Calais is a Snakehead, Peacock Bass, Barramundi style reel. IMHO the Steez A, Z200, Z2020 surpasses it in casting and comfort and certainly serviceablilty. It feels like old hack in as far as no change in technology in this reel since it's inception, i have owned both standard ASV and dc models.

  • @caseydangar1193

    @caseydangar1193

    2 жыл бұрын

    Shimano reels are the best and g Loomis is owned by shimano so they got the rod world on lock to. Shimano is absolutely the best in the fishing world. And I just bought a 2021 antares dc and it is the best reel on planet earth. The 4x8 dc brakes system is bar none the best. And finally we have an antares dc reel that is comfortable to palm. I would love to hear this guys opinion on antares dc reels so many years later after all the negatives he had have been remedied. I could never justify a 500+ dollar reel like a steez when its just standard braking for diawa. There is no ground braking tech in the reel. Atleast Shimano has dc braking to try to justify the price. I love diawa reels. I own multiple tatula 150s, and tatula elites. But those are $160 and $240 which is a justified price. But diawa does not make a reel worth over $300

    I had the original steez baitcaster and spinners from years ago. Sold them a looong time ago. I feel the current Steez SV TWS is the best all around baitcasting reel I've ever owned. It does pretty much everything great. Weighs next to nothing. Palms well. Casts great. Pitches and skips beautifully. Throws small and largish baits wonderfully. And can be fished one handed. I like them enough to be selling off a pair of Metanium DC reels

  • @Rascallucci

    So, in other words, if your Steez didn't transform after your first clean-up, straight out of the box the Antares would easily be the smoothest hands down right? If the Antares is too heavy a reel and not that great a caster, may be the Metanium MGL could well be a better comparison with the Steez perhaps? Just a suggestion.

  • @TackleAdvisors

    Yeah, it was a smooth reel (which is why i hate saying smooth) but it had a resonance during the retrieve. Still buttery smooth though. THe antares was smoother (ughh) at first. Keep in mind. This review was based on $$$$. The MGL vs MGX (non extreme) vs steez would be the ideal battle (shame abu lies about the drag) The mgl from what i read on the interwebs has been experiencing some issues with quality control. including some videos a subscriber sent me of his.

  • @Rascallucci

    @Rascallucci

    7 жыл бұрын

    I know you don't agree, but I still think the Micro Module Gears is the key to ultimate smoothness. Think of it this way, imagine if you keep cutting the teeth of the main gear smaller and smaller, what would happen? Well, eventually it would become just a smooth circle like a pulley which of course would be exceedingly smooth. I would go as far as to say I would be very surprised if any other reel other than a Shimano reel with Micro Module Gears would be smoother. In fact, I would say Shimano's competitors are well aware of that and they know in order to beat out Shimano they will have to find a way to cut their gear teeth smaller and with more precision. Having said that, smoother doesn't necessarily mean it is a better reel in terms of casting and so forth. However, the issue is once you have tried and experienced that extreme high level of smoothness, it will stick to your mind for most people. Like I said, I first experienced the Micro Module Gears a few years ago with a Conquest and to date that smoothness is still literally imprinted in my head. And that alone could mess with you as in creating a superior quality perception and thus causing a certain preference towards Shimano especially when it comes to extreme high end models.

    @@Rascallucci As a guy that rebuilds gearboxes for a living, I caution about this. The whole job of any gearbox is to transmit force. More pitches per inch transmit just as much force as less pitches per inch. There is less vibration at the "start of life." However, the probability of stripping the gears under load is much higher because there's less backbone transmitting torque. Here I agree with TA that "micro module gearing" is a gimmick intended to sway the buyer.

I’m a saltwater fisherman, I own thousands in saltwater gear so I’m not looking to invest, i bass fish maybe 20 times a year from the bank (28’ center consoles with twin outboards don’t fit in many lakes in MD) and the Quantum pt reels I’d had are shot. The drag maxes out at like 5lbs and the single drag washer that looks like stacked paper is now past it’s prime after a decade of use. I am far to fidgety to fish plastics slowly so it’d be 99.9% power fishing. Hard to slow down when everything offshore wants it as fast as possible.

    The reel was a Quantum pt energy hpt100 7.1:1 gear ratio. Just did the bearings and she spins like a top but the drag is supposed to be 13.2lbs and I’ve tried and tried I can’t get it above 5.5lbs! We just had 3 days in the 60’s here, had like a 2lb smallmouth strip me like a tuna and I realized I was in trouble! Handlined that bit** in though!

    @@jeffsmith8958 from what I've saw and heard it should do you fine. Around the hundred dollar mark you can get decent reels now from all the main manufacturer's. The Lew's LFS, Shimano Slx, and the Abu Revo X, though I have been hearing of lots of problems with where the sideplates release is on the Revo.

    Let’s be honest Daiwa and Shimano are the best brands for reels, my opinion but cmon, smoothest, best seals for low prices, etc

    I honestly think shimano makes the best spinning reels, abu Garcia the best old style round reels, diawa makes best saltwater reels probley even with penn. Lews makes the best bass fishing low profile baitcaster reels. Lews invented the low profile baitcaster so they all owe a little respect to lews. Exsphesley shimano being that lews is the reason shimano is in the fishing industry. They started by manufacturing lews gear for them. I love it all

    I asked Abu Garcia about why the reel doesn't achieve 12 pounds of drag pressure and they told me "We suggest you check out the drag washers. If they are fouled by lubrication or dirt you will have less drag pressure than when they are clean and dry."

    Hey Scott!! Thanks again!! I'm willing to bet....That since the max drag without having to really hammer the drag is closer to 5.5lbs. I bet they accidently thought that was Kilograms when they looked at the Doyo spec sheet. If you saw the drag washer..it was squeaky clean. A few others have confirmed that they had max drag numbers closer to 5-6lbs as well.

    Oh..and FYI I took the polishing wheel to the main gear. I think the main gear is chemically treated. Polishing didn't to anything to the surface. Yet the main on the antares is "glowing"it's now so shiny. Did you want to see if I can get more drag out of it with a different washer setup (i may have some parts that'll work???)

    Tackle Advisors I was curious what they would say if I told them I could not come close to the drag specs. I wonder if they are charging anything on the new expanded lineup now that they are getting 24lb of drag pressure.

    Tackle Advisors that would be awesome! Feel free to try anything you think might want to try. I am game try anything and if you want see what the material gear is made up of you my permission to see what it is.

    I was able to get a bright polish out of the pinion....so it is a different alloy or surface treatment. Looking closer after a little more polishing. It looks almost wet. So it did take the polish well. Just doesnt become bright as brass. The steez was the same. Pinion bright silver. Main gear looks wet. Whether it's a heat treat, chem treat or different alloy. It's a form of aluminum. No need to scratch test. I'm not a metallurgist. Only thing I'd find out is if it is a chemically hardened gear. Kinda doubting that. Think it's just an aluminum alloy.

    Tackle isn’t made to catch fish it’s made to catch customers. No company is going to make a reel that lasts forever or that you will be satisfied with. They always want you to upgrade and replace worn out gear ⚙️. There is also a vanity factor.

    Shimano never marketed the Antares as "lightweight" model in the line up,i don't understand what your fuss is all about,it's like complaining a Mercedes S class so over engineered. There's other model in shimano line up that target the fragile hand audience like metanium mgl and aldebaran. Antares is the rare product that focus on providing luxurious feel in the hand. You want all reel company to produce homogenous product that's stupid,we should celebrate diversity in market
