There's a christian fiction series called, The Circle Series in which a dude gets to live through a fantasy version of the events of the Bible and when that world's version of Jesus came I remember getting mad at him and siding with the religious leaders who wanted to punish him. Then when it was revealed that character was essentially Jesus I realized how easy it is to be smug thinking I would have been one of the "good guys." That has stuck with me for so long. I think I killed Jesus. I think we all did.

Hi Tyler, I agree with you, we all killed Jesus. (see my reply and re-reply to Matt). But on the point about "The Circle Series", you are not alone. There was a study (many actually) done on this. I recommend a 2:49 short of a Jordan Peterson video called "How Ordinary Men Became Nazi Killers" - Prof. Jordan Peterson. Has over 2,000,000 views. If Jesus had waited until today, would we trust he is the son of God, or would we crucify him as a heretic? We have the benefit of 2000 years of study and history. I'm not completely sure Jesus would have been treated any different today.

After the resurrection Jesus goes even farther: If you've seen me, you've seen the Father (John 14:9) I will not plead the Father on your behalf because the Father loves you Himself (John 16:26) God is just as forgiving as His Son! When the passion is read aloud in our church, the lector reads the narration, the priest reads Jesus’s lines, the cantor reads various characters in that narrative. The congregation calls for his crucifixion. As a child, I loved that part, until I realized that I wasn’t just reciting words from long ago. I learned that story was my story too. Thanks for this awesome explanation. 5K views and 500 likes in one day? This is something that we are all hungry for.

It is obvious that you are: A) Focused on the truth of these events, B) Thoughtful in your presentation of information to your audience, and C) Careful in discerning the significance of history and of the questions you are trying to answer. Its become apparent to me that why we care about the answer to questions is frequently the point of miscommunication between people who believe different stuff, and you made it very clear why these answers are important. Nice video :)

One more thing of note. Jesus answers this question Himself in John 10:17-18 "Therefore doth the Father love me: because I lay down my life, that I may take it again. No man taketh it away from me: but I lay it down of myself, and I have power to lay it down: and I have power to take it up again. This commandment have I received of my Father." Or, if you prefer the New International Version "No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”"

For many years now, each time I take Communion I visualize myself at the foot of the cross. I'm not there to tell Jesus that I love Him or to try to take him down from it. Instead, I am the one mocking Him. I am the one thrusting the spear in His side. I am the one telling Him that if He is the King of the Jews that He should save Himself. If you ever really want to be humbled by Jesus' sacrifice on the cross then consider this - if everyone else was perfect and you were the only sinner in all of human existence, Jesus still would have gone through the same suffering and death solely for the sake of your soul. What an expression of love for us personally!

Short answer: The Jewish Sanhedrin wanted Yeshua dead because he posed a threat to their religious order (and because of their presumed accusations of blasphemy). The Romans didn't really care who He was, but in order to maintain order (at that point), appeasing the Jewish Sanhedrin and the crowd they stirred was more important than Yeshua's innocence. Pontius Pilate was forced between murdering an innocent man and maintaining public order... He chose to essentially order the murder of Yeshua, in order to maintain the public order... As, historically, Judea was constantly a hot bed of revolts and insurrections. Getting rid of such individuals was of greater paramount (in Roman foreign policy) than the theological arguments being made. Especially when said Jewish Sanhedrin were accusing Yeshua of intending to cause a revolt against the Roman Empire and spur war in Judea itself... To which the Sanhedrin did not feel ready to start yet (not for another 50 years or so. Which would lead to the Jewish Rebellion and the complete razing of the city of Jerusalem in AD 72). Edit: But yes, it is an intergenerational guilt. Every man and woman has and had put Yeshua to death within their own heart by their own rebellion/lawlessness. But by doing so and confessing with one's mouth, and believing in one's heart, that Yeshua is Lord, was killed for our lawlessness, and was risen by the Ruach Hakodesh to life on the 3rd day, that one is saved by their faith, and justified by the Grace shewn upon them by the Heavenly Father, YHWH.

  • @IsYitzach

This is one of favorite points of the Grace of God. The soulless state did the actual act and so no one is guilty of the act of murder. Now... the state actors, Pilot, Herod, and the Sanhedrin, they have other sins in the matter: hating a person and/or idolizing money, power, and/or status before God. And of course, all our sin put Him there.

Ages ago, an Isreali friend asked if it was the Jewish or Roman leadership who were responsible for Jesus' death. I think my reply was was something like "both" and "neither." Both must give account for their action. But (as you said more clearly than I did that night), unwittingly and unwillingly they all played a part in God's plan to save us all. In the end, I think stumbled around to this verse: Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. - Isaiah 53:10

Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. *1Chronicles.2:* 55These are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the Rekabites. *Jeremiah.35:* 1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord during the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: 2“Go to the Rekabite family and invite them to come to one of the side rooms of the house of the Lord and give them wine to drink.” 3So I went to get Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons-the whole family of the Rekabites. 4I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the room of the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah the man of God. It was next to the room of the officials, which was over that of Maaseiah son of Shallum the doorkeeper. 5Then I set bowls full of wine and some cups before the Rekabites and said to them, “Drink some wine.” 6But they replied, “We do not drink wine, because our forefather Jehonadab son of Rekab gave us this command: ‘Neither you nor your descendants must ever drink wine. 7Also you must never build houses, sow seed or plant vineyards; you must never have any of these things, but must always live in tents. Then you will live a long time in the land where you are nomads.’ 8We have obeyed everything our forefather Jehonadab son of Rekab commanded us. Neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters have ever drunk wine 9or built houses to live in or had vineyards, fields or crops. 10We have lived in tents and have fully obeyed everything our forefather Jehonadab commanded us. 11But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded this land, we said, ‘Come, we must go to Jerusalem to escape the Babylonian and Aramean armies.’ So we have remained in Jerusalem.” *1Chronicles.2:* 54These are descendants of Salma: Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth Beth Joab, half the Manahathites, the Zorites, 55and the clans of scribes who lived at Jabez: the Tirathites, Shimeathites and Sucathites. These are the Kenites who came from Hammath, the father of the Rekabites. *Matthew.13:* 34Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. 35So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.” 36Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” 37He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. 38The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one, 39and the enemy who sows them is the devil *1John.3:* 11For this is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12Do not be like Cain, who was of the evil one *John.8:* 42Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. Thanks for being thorough in sharing your thoughts on this publicly. Your channel has helped me so much in exploring the wider world and history of the faith and my own faith. I appreciate you addressing a sensitive topic (the history of Christian anti-Semitic tropes) out in the open for all to learn together. I think there is a difficult tension in the first few minutes. The title of the last video is defended as a kind of "clever", "sounds good", "has drama" (0:48). In short, it's a catchy clickable title. There is insightful feedback that the tone is in line with a history of Christian anti-semitic tropes (possibly referring both to the title itself and the main contention of who killed Jesus). I think the pushback on considering how this affects others is a little weak. At 2:37 you say that you don't want to hurt people but essentially, what matters is that the content is materially true. But if we are unwittingly replaying a history of language that carries a lot of baggage, is it a sound defense to just say that the words in a literal decontextualized sense are "materially true?" If we desire to not cause unnecessary harm, isn't the way something is said also relevant? If the reason for the title was that it was "clever" and "had drama", does the clickability of a title outweigh that such a simplified and sensationalized summary repeats a history of propaganda and tangible harm to people? It doesn't seem that the material truth of the sentence is at the core of the concern. It seems that it's about context. Also, your summary of the "material truth" behind the title doesn't actually match the title. The title says that this particular Jewish family kills Jesus. The material claim you want to defend is whether members of that family bear responsibility. A bare material truth seems to be that they share responsibility for having Jesus killed. There is an intricate web between certain Jewish religious leaders and Pontius Pilate. It seems materially NOT defensible to reduce that web down to saying that one Jewish family killed Jesus. You could perhaps just barely simplify the web to "Pontus Pilate killed Jesus," as we roughly remember in the Apostle's Creed. TL;DR - a clever clickbait title and thumbnail unwittingly replayed Christian anti-Semitic tropes. It seems love of neighbor would call us to take note and consider the context and history of words and ideas. If the feedback from the original commenter is seen in the context of concern for love of neighbor, I think it looks a lot different then if his comment is seen in terms of a culture war about "white men saying negative things about other people groups", which is the context that you seem to have read it in (3:50). The summary paragraph at 31:20 looks like an excellent summary, and is different in material claim and tone from the video title, and the rest of the video preceding that point.

Very true. There are obviously a lot of interpretations of this, but I do I like the idea that people's relationship to God was made manifest in their relationship to Jesus. Those who had built their self-righteousness up on their relationship to God had made manifest their self-righteousness. Those who couldn't tell one god from another had made manifest the fact that they can't tell one god from Another. One intellectual, a few of the mystics, many of the common people and most of the most troubled people could see things as they were, in part.

I totally agree with you. People are totally within their rights to disagree with you. That's one of the things that I love about you is that you have the rare humility to say, "I think I'm right, I've got all these reasons, but some of the people who disagree with me -- even the Internet trolls -- have a point." And I love how you fully explore the point of someone that might be just this side of being a troll. It's so awesome to see you nuance your statement to match the nuaunce that's requested. I'm kinda on the other end of this one for your nuaunced answer, though. Not only do I think you are right, I think your correctness goes even deeper and stronger and more fundamental than you state. We're all responsible for Christ's death, and that puts us all on even footing. Don't like someone because they're a murderer? Turns out, I am too. I killed Christ. Don't like someone because they're a drug dealer? Turns out I put things in motion to post vinegar and gal to Christ. Don't like thieves? Turns out I put things in motion to make men steal the clothes off a dying Christ's back. Don't like turncoats? I put things in motion that pushed Judas Iscariot to betray Christ. This isn't just true, it's part of the fundamental nature of moral reality, just like gravity is part of the fundamental nature of physical reality.

Hey Matt, I've been a fan of yours for a few years now but this is my first comment. I'm almost caught up with the podcast. You had me on the edge of my seat with this one waiting for you to quote Jesus saying "no man takes my life from me..." and even though you didn't use that nail in the coffin scripture, you did make the point. I thought you might enjoy something I wrote a few years ago on this subject so here goes: There is a fundamental misunderstanding at the root of much of the anti-Semitic rhetoric concerning both the crucifixion of Yeshua and the killing of the prophets. 1, Yeshua Himself and the prophets were Jews themselves. 2. Yeshua wept over Jerusalem calling it the city who killed the prophets and yet had nothing but love for it. 3. It is extremely hypocritical because Christ died for us while we were yet enemies of God. God has made very strong, eternal covenants with Israel and specifically David and the city of Jerusalem. This displays just how great God's love, mercy and faithfulness is. If we expect Him to be merciful and faithful to us then we will see that in His relationship with Israel first. Finally, Yeshua said nobody takes My life from me for I lay it down of My own according to My Father's will. In that light the Romans did not kill Jesus. The Jews did not kill Jesus. Jesus sacrificed His life for my sins and yours. We killed Jesus. My sins put Jesus on the cross. And if it was not for the Jews first Jesus would not have been born and second Jesus would have no altar to be sacrificed on. So, if anything we should thank the Jews. A close examination of Yeshua's last 3 years on earth will reveal a purposeful march towards His crucifixion. Just as Isaac walked 3 days with his father to the altar on the mount so Jesus walked 3 years with His Father knowing exactly where He was going. We see this in His purposeful, public provocation of the Jewish leaders which any right minded person at the time would know would get them killed. Even the timing and placement of what He did, being in Jerusalem at Passover, was a straight march towards His death, a death He said was a sacrifice according to His Father's will. So thank the Jews for being as a priest offering the Lamb of God for us. As for the prophets, they may have killed them but they also preserved their words for us, so again, thank the Jews!

"Anti-Semitic rhetoric"? I hope you know Christians are the most persecuted religion in the world. But, there isn't a "word" for us... I'll never thank the Jews. They've killed my FATHER. Matthew 27:25 says, 'His blood be on us and on our children.' John 8:42-47 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.” John 19:7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.” Revelation 3:9 9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. I'll never thank them. Jesus is the KING OF THE JEWS. THE KING OF KINGS. HAIL CHRIST THE KING!

Jesus went to the Cross completely willing and voluntarily to be the Sacrificial Lamb for our sins. The law requires a blood sacrifice, and Jesus said yes. John 4:22. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Romans 11 various verses: I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. More from Romans 11: Ingrafted Branches 11 Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious. 12 But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring! 13 I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I take pride in my ministry 14 in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them. 15 For if their rejection brought reconciliation to the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? 16 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches. 17 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, 18 do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you. 19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” 20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but tremble. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either. 22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. 23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. 24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree! All Israel Will Be Saved 25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, 26 and in this way[e] all Israel will be saved. As it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. 27 And this is[f] my covenant with them when I take away their sins.”[g] 28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, 29 for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. 30 Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now[h] receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32 For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all. Romans 15:8-9 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God's truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed. Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”[

Romans 3: What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? 2 Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God. 3 What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness? 4 Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.”[a] 5 But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) 6 Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? 7 Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?” 8 Why not say-as some slanderously claim that we say-“Let us do evil that good may result”? Their condemnation is just! No One Is Righteous 9 What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Colossians 3 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. Luke 18 31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.” 34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.

I never realized that there was a Christian historical implication of the whole Jewish people bearing responsibility for Jesus's death. I suppose that's ignorance on my part, but I also count myself lucky that my particular church tradition only ever talked about the blame for Christ's death being on the pharisees and Pilate, it was devoid of any weird jew-blaming undertones. It's sobering for me to learn that this is an issue that has so negatively affected Jewish people and that it has roots in the history of faith. Thanks for making an informative video, and thanks to the other commenters that are helping me understand how serious of a problem this has been historically. Yes, I knew that Jews had to do with condemning Jesus… but pretty much everyone in the area was Jewish, including the disciples and Jesus Himself! It seemed dumb to me to place extra guilt on Jewish people living 2,000 years later. And even if they were extra guilty for something their great x 20 grandfather might have done, that’s just all the more reason that Jesus can save them!

The Catholic Church is definitely a major culprit of helping establish the pre-eminence of Anti-Semitism. Especially when considering the Catholic Church believes that Jerusalem and the land of Israel belongs to them, not the Children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Even more so when for several centuries they were the Subject Matter Experts on all things Christian. And thus, with a select few in power, could use Christianity, not as a force for good, but as a force for their own ends (as we see multiple times throughout Catholic history). And whenever people tried to make the Bible publicly available to the masses, they were executed or excommunicated as heretics... The Catholic Church has not done a whole lot of good for anyone.

And instead of raping a 13 year old girl, why not just use dirt again? Surely Joseph was confused. Then again, he was a 30 year old pedophile. Will Christians ever realize just how barbaric that belief system truly is?

    The case of Anns I don’t understand why you all think that there is any man who has any greater access to The Father than you. We pray to The Father and to Christ as The Father’s agent. We don’t pray to Mary or the saints or anybody else. We pray and serve only The Father. So Anns and his relatives were in their office by title and tribe only. I believe the only reason for the Temple standing was so Jesus could fulfill the Law. Fulfill not to do away with or to change the Law. I agree the Torah-teachers and the Pharisees were behind His conviction but the Romans were the means of his execution. Matthew 5:20 "For I tell you that unless your righteousness is far greater than that of the Torah-teachers and P’rushim, you will certainly not enter the Kingdom of Heaven!" {CJB}

Nothing. They still hate christ and Christians. Read 1 Thessalonians 2:14-16
