Who is X-Men's Legion? - Comic Tropes (Episode 36)

Ойын-сауық

FX's new show Legion debuts soon so I review an issue of The New Mutants (issue #28) by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz. It's the first story about Legion. I also note the tropes that Chris Claremont would use in New Mutants stories and take a drink of Absinthe for each one.

What good would Cypher be in a fighting group like the X-Men? He can understand any language, that's his power right? There's no reason to have him travel with the group. Yes, his skill might be useful sometimes, but rarely in a fight (other than to maybe avoid one because miscommunication based on language barrier). You might as well leave him back at the Mansion and just communicate by radio if his skills were needed.

Actually got Schizophrenia wrong. What is the core to Schizophrenia is that someone that suffer it has a hard time distinguishing and understanding reality. Like hearing voices or having other forms of hallucinations and delusion. The mind is not fractured per say. But the disorder often connected with other disorders like depression and mood swings so I can see how that idea might have started to circulate. It is not hard to see how someone suffering form sever Schizophrenia might be confused with a person that have other disorders ether like DID even if these are seen a very separate things. For many having voices that tell you things and having a other personality may seem very much alike after all. However, these terms are often used interchangeably which I think ComicTropes did very well to explain that there absolutely not. Mental disorders are complex and sometimes the terms change as we get a better understanding on how to categorize these disorders. Sadly these disorders are not often accurately portrait in media. I can only think of two times that Schizophrenia have been done somewhat well in popular media my self. I also think is important to know that there are people that have Schizophrenia that can function in society. And it tend to be more people that suffer Schizophrenia on the receiving end of violent crime then the other way around. A bit off topic but I still think it worth stating due to the stigma.

When I was studying Psychology in my undergraduate days, it was always presented to me that it's not really that they have completely different person inside of you that can interact with each other. It's more that someone with Dissociative Identity Disorder creates a different identity usually as a coping mechanism when dealing with extreme trauma from the past like child abuse etc. Think of it as an extreme version of escapism people mentally do when they read or watch fiction to get away from real world problems, This is why Hulk deals with Dissociative Identity Disorder a bit better as a metaphor since it was shown that the "HULK" was always a part of Bruce Banner when he was abused by his father even before the gamma bomb. It's not a completely different person inside of you but a part of you trying to deal with a situation. Bruce Banner just suppressed his anger until the gamma bomb made it manifest into a physical form

Mario U Yes, I understand the real world interpretation of DID but there seems to be room in the comic for Legion to have absorbed a separate psyche. But maybe not. It's not 100% clear.

Your comments on Cypher's abilities struck a chord with me, I totally would have also been excited by the ability to learn any language immediately. You mentioned going into a random restaurant somewhere in Japan or Russia and just talking with someone. That's something I would also love to be able to do as easily as Cypher could have. I can speak one foreign language, Chinese, at least conversationally. The ability to speak to random people who were raised in a vastly different culture than my own is absolutely exciting. Judging from your videos, it seems like you spent some time in Japan. Did you ever learn much of the language, and if so, did you fulfill that dream of talking to a random stranger in a restaurant?

One of the things I liked about Karma was that she actually spoke English with a French accent, and used French terms and phrases, instead of Vietnamese, because she learned English in French. It was a good way to reference the colonial history of Vietnam (and, from a writing perspective, probably made it a lot easier for a white comic author in 1985 to write than Vietnamese), especially since Karma's backstory is inextricably linked to the Vietnam War and the plight of Vietnamese refugees in post-war America.

Cypher was a man ahead of his time. He would be a lot more useful now than in the past. Hell... this ability would allow him to decipher the codes behind serial killer messages or mysterious computer programming. He could even come up with a super difficult hard code to disguise your secrets. He is basically the Michelangelo teenage ninja turtle character in of the team coming up with gadgets and figuring out puzzles.

I know you probably won't read this, but I was re-watching this video after watching Legion . Three things come to mind: 1) God, this art is great and it really stands out as the only Marvel thing of that era which rivals what would happen with Vertigo. 2) I'd kinda like you to do a video about the Age of Apocalypse comics, where my generation learned about Legion. Though, I know i'ts probably algorithm poison. 3) Even more of a moon shot pitch: it'd be fun to see you do a retrospective on Uncanny X-Men #303, which I swear I used to have 8 copies of because they over-printed it and packaged it with every piece of X-Men merch when I was a kid. It introduced a lot of us youngins to Magik and is such a weird, lovely, melodramatic, soap-opera, failed cash-grab of a comic from that strange time in comics. Oddly, mint is now going for like $30. Again, algorithm suicide, but a good comics history story. PS4) You're the best at what you do. Thanks!

Warlock not understanding the funeral and burial process, dug up the cadaver of Cypher and walked around pretending *himself;friend* could live again. The miniseries was a 3 issue arc, where Warlock somehow lives again but resembles Cypher.

Absinthe should not make you hallucinate. Also, you should use an absinthe glass, put the absinthe spoon over it, place a sugar cube on the spoon, pour the absinthe over the sugar cube into the glass, the set the sugar cube on fire, then add a few drops of water and stir the dissolving sugar cube into the mix of water and absinthe. You should drink it correctly for the best flavor. Side note: many people that hallucinated on this did so because they were either really drunk (see also - pink elephants) or they hallucinated because it was mixed with something like fermeldahide. During temperance and prohibition... Barkeeps would water down their alcohol or "cut it". This helped them to save money by giving watered down liquor and made them extra profit by rationing the reserve. Embalming fluid was one way they watered down the booze. It's toxic, so it would give the drinker similar feelings of being drunk, as they imbibed more they would hallucinate, and if they drank too much it would kill them. There are a series of tunnels underneath a North West American city where a group of men found few barrels of booze. Since no one was looking they started drinking it. In the morning they were all found dead. The barrels were filled with fermeldahide and in a section of the underground that was being used as storage for the mortuary right above.

"Supposedly" is right. Believe me, you get drunk off Absinthe, it's not going to make you trip balls. This is in itself a trope, basically a pre-internet meme almost.

The Freedom Force game duology (because they killed the series before releasing the third game, thus ending the series on a setup for what I'd assume would be a an "Event" type finale) also throws some friendly jab at the accents, one of their main characters is basically a magical version of Jean Grey (that later gets her very own Dark Phoenix storyline) and they give her Storm's catchphrase but with a southern accent. "Bah the gahddess!"

If I'm completely honest, I didn't like Sienkiewicz's art back in the 80s. I just didn't get it. My friends and I called him the "blocky" guy on New Mutants. These days I'm absolutely mystified that Marvel wasn't throwing stacks of cash at him to keep him drawing every comic they could. He did New Mutants, and Moon Knight, and Elektra: Assassin, but beyond that there really isn't much penciling on his resume. He did much more inking. Maybe he just didn't want to pencil all that much, but I wish he would. He's amazing.

You often criticize the overuse of narration, but I think writers like Walt Simonson and Chris Claremont really knew how to use it. Their narration didn't just describe what you could see in the art (at least, for Claremont, that was usually characters thinking or talking, more than the narration boxes), it described emotions and the stakes and tension, and could really lend to the gravitas of the scene, especially when they started getting poetic about it.

Well Yu Yu Hakusho also had thoughts along those lines. Shinobu Sensui is an antagonist with dissociative identity disorder and one of his henchmen fell in love with a female personality of his, Naru. Whom he speaks of fondly and compliments her beautiful poetry.

I have just started reading The (original) New Mutants series, from the start. I'm up to #4. I like it a lot! Which surprises me a little, as I would have thought, before reading, that it was too "immature", being that's it's concerned with teens and pre-teens. So far, I have to award it one of the highest accolades I own, as say: it's a LOT like the original Claremont X-Men run; it had mysteries and twists and turns every installment; and the soap-opera, inter-personal relationships between the characters is very sweet and nice. Cheers Chris, "LiL'JpD."

Xavier got his body cloned by the time the new mutants series started, around issue 6 and when he came back from secrets wars he could walk normally. By the time he left to space he was still walking, so during the new mutants run most of the time Xavier could walk, as for magneto the idea of those pages was to show how he was turning into a good buy who would eventually became the new headmaster so it makes total sense to have them. Cypher is back and he is amazing. I love Doug he was this sort of geek boy between gods.

Bill Sienkiewicz was my first introduction into my New Mutants LOVE with issue #18. His comparatively short run remains my absolute favorite NM run to this day. Shooter's edict was silly, understable, but silly and Claremont just made it ridiculous.

Super talented guy Bill Sienkiewicz is. I've grown to really like Guido Carosella's white troll hair, though I once thought it looked stupid. But I've kinda never understood what Legion's hair is supposed to be. I still think Claremont whatever his Bill Shooter-enforced habits may be, is more intuitive and thoughtful about his and other characters than other writers. Today a lot of them are written out of character, but Chris knows all the characters inside and out.

30:23 maybe, after a while of David using this wristband, they should have revealed that it was actually useless, and that because they were just simply giving David some support at all, gave him what he thought he needed to be in control of his seemingly unlimited powers.

probably late to the party, but pyrokinesis is the manipulation of fire, like moving it, (kinetic), while the "summoning" or creation of fire would be pyromancy. Pyro for example has the ability of pyrokinesis (can not generate fire on his own [usually]), whereas Sunfire can shoot fire, but has no influence on fire except creating it, which would be sole pyromancy. Sometimes characters can do both

When I discovered Blevins, I didn't appreciate his art as I do now, neither. I was still rather young (even if we were 2 years late , in France, on the American edition at that time) ... since , I realised how his landscapes are incredible and I talked with him via emails and on Facebook, and he is such a kind person...
