My husband's grandmother was the most frugal woman I've ever met. For our wedding she gave us The Complete Tightwad Gazette and it was seriously the best gift we received. I remember she would take this 1/4 tsp to measure out the dishsoap in the her sink full of water after every meal. She folded grocery store bags and only had trash cans that fit them so she never had to buy bags. She would cut out birds and flowers from magazies people gave her to make greeting cards and picture books for my kids. She had ONE DRESS. What I mean by that is that she had a dress pattern from the 50s, and when a dress would wear out, she would go to the Walmart, pick out clearance fabric she liked, and make another. So every dress was the same exact cut, with this same little matching apron in front. I TOTALLY loved everything about her. Her willingness to help us learn to be frugal was one of God's great blessings in my life.

Christine, tell your brother to buy his wife a fruit tree as a gift! She'll like it because it will actually MAKE money for them in the long run with all the apples or whatever it produces that they won't have to buy at the store. I get my husband to buy me different fruit trees ans bushes every year. I have apple trees and blueberry bushes so far and am asking for a lemon tree this year.

Our family friend Dawsie was hands-down the most frugal person I've ever met. She grew up in a VERY wealthy family with servants, I could go on. She was a college professor and I believe she embraced frugality to horrify her family as a rebellion. Sadly, she passed away January 2021 at 90 years old. I really enjoyed knowing her. She dressed so badly you would have absolutely no idea of her background (she loved doing this). She would choose particular tshirts or sayings on the shirts for occasions - all of her clothes were free. She never had a phone, and refused to even have a mail box, receiving her mail at the post office via "general delivery" because it was free. She really gets the award. No one, no one, is as cheap as her. She grew all of her food (ate no meat) as an organic farmer. She reused pieces of paper, and would send me reused cards. I learned so much from her, all types of knowledge. She was delightful. She would utilize the ability to do work overseas to travel to exotic places, with the trip being paid for, in various types of work.

My grandmother would save all the little slivers of soap into a glass Mason jar (because plastic was the devil to her) with a small amount of water, eventually, she would have a jar filled with this gray liquid soap ooze that she'd bathe with. She would also use old quilts and blankets as the batting for new quilts, the "new" quilts were made from squares cut out of old shirts, pants, coats, etc. And she kept every button. I have her button collection. It's one of the most precious things I own

One of the side benefits of frugality is that it meshes well with environmentalism. I myself always reuse plastic bags repeatedly. Sandwich bags, freezer bags or just the bags that your bagels or bread come in all can be reused and it saves the plastic from ending up in the garbage/recycling for a while since you don't use another plastic bag. I reuse plastic yogurt containers to start seedlings. I keep paper towels that i use to clean the kitchen counter and use them again on the bathroom mirror. All that you reuse saves something from being thrown out and reduces what goes into the waste system. If frugality helps your pocket book and the planet at the same time, more power to you. Christie is a smart woman as well as frugal. Buying just for the sake of consumerism is one of the things that is ruining the planet!

I'm somewhat eco-friendly from back in the day. Since then simply being frugal, looking for self maintaining stems, starting to switch from plastic food storage for performance reasons, recycling starting years ago 'cause everything re ycled is free to get rid of, and so on to save money, save labor, or be good health wise has made me pretty eco-friendly.

Chime in late, yes indeed! Recent wedding held in the back yard with repurposed cut trees for gazebo. Framed beautifully in front of my grapevine. Minimal purchased items, mostly food and all prepared at home. The wine purchased by MIL. Bride to be bought a $4 second hand dress. Mom bought a new one for her special day. The wedding had to be in the summer for all the perennial plants to be in bloom. Rustic elegance at it's best! Benches were made from reclaimed fence panels and wood stumps. Even homemade wedding cakes, that were perfect. I'm sure I'm forgetting frugal ideas here, but thought I would share what's come to mind. PS Grandma kept her face and hand wash water, until I would pull her drain. That's where I drew the line. I'm sanitary frugal. 🤣🤣🤣

I took a large box of cereal, gallon of milk, large can of salmon (my mother made the best croquettes) she took it back to the store, returned it and bought the smaller can. (tuna size) My kids 12 and 9 said she made the smallest salmon balls you have ever seen and they were so hungry. Called and begged me to pick them up. Oh could I tell stories about my Dad! One of the worst aspects of his frugal nature was when we would go on vacation in the summers. We'd come to a cheap, old motel, he'd tell mom and me to lay down in the car so when he went in to get a room, he could say it was a room for one!😳Most motels back then had two double beds, so he'd just ask for an extra towel or two and we were set. What I hated was worrying that the owner would see all of us swimming in the motel pool, or coming out of the room at some point! Ugh! I hated that!!!

I use my husband's old (clean) socks for him to use as rags at work. I also reuse plastic baggies. If it's not a pain to wash a dirty bag I'll wash it. Like you, if I only put a sandwich in a bag I'll just reuse it for another sandwich.

Okay, at first blush I felt a bit uncomfortable with the car conversation about Christy's frugality without her being present. (Felt a bit like criticizing her behind her back.) But, we all know that family dynamics are different and I am a BIG conflict avoider. However, I grew to love Christy's frugality, and I share a few of her traits (like declining clothing gifts due to cost.) For me, a person who is lso that frugal, I appreciate a request for a small list of what I would love to receive as a gift. Yes, at first, she may balk. But lovingly remind her that people want to give her gifts at times, and would like to know what she won't buy for herself but would enjo . I eventually listed the "guilty pleasures" of things like personal stationery, a donation to my favorite charity, and flavored coffee to make at home. Finally, your family is so sweet!! Great video!

My grandmother reused everything. Plastic zip seal bags until they leaked, bread sacks and the ties, every plastic container from yogurt or cottage cheese. She always used wash rags for napkins and the chicken feed sacks and plastic grocery bags for garbage bags. My grandpa was allowed 1 toothpick a week and they reused dental floss. Nothing went to waste. They had chickens that ate any food scrap they didn’t eat. When they passed away, it was a nightmare cleaning out the house but they had more money in their bank account than anyone could imagine as they lived so frugal.

I'm with you. It's also that you don't just want them swinging by the grocery store to grab whatever. I mean, once you are married it is family money so you are basically buying your own gift. I'd rather get something I want or nothing. Too practical. Already typed in here about how I got garage doors, an upright freezer, etc. and this year a promise from my husband to flame weed the garden with me since we are scared to try it. We just retired and people gave us a lot of gift certificates to restaurants but we aren't using them so far because it's just not what we do.

We heard it so often that one Christmas we gave him a very inexpensive belt that we had poked holes all the way to the buckle. TWIZZLER - all the way!!! We were very poor when growing up. We used to save the margarine wrapper - carefully folded over - to grease cookie sheets when baking. My Aunt (I adore her), cuts the written part off from cards and reuses the picture side to send cards. She also knits slippers for everyone so she has some thing to give. She was visiting last month, wearing a 2 piece suit she made - always the same pattern, different fabric- from a linen shower curtain she picked up at the thrift store. I was reading the Tightwad Gazette when it was a newsletter, before she wrote it into a book. Frugal to the bone. :)

My friend Angie is the most frugal person I know. She's extremely amazing. She has a ton of kids all teenagers and then adopted a bunch. She's a social worker. She works extremely hard helping people. She doesn't like to pay for anything. She coupons to the extreme. She then sales some of her stuff and then gives to the homeless and churches. She uses discounts and money she earns on apps to pay for gifts. She has taught me so much. I could never say thank you enough for her allowing me to watch and learn from her. She is one of the most giving people that I know. She someone I admire.

My mother used to make us bring our brown paper lunch bags home to reuse until they literally disintegrated. In third grade, I was sent to the principal's office for not throwing out my brown bag and had to explain the situation, further adding to my embarrassment. We then went to Grandma's attic and found my GRANDFATHER's childhood lunchbox. Needless to say, there was no Barbie or a cute matching thermos. I don't know how I survived my childhood without massive therapy.

My grandmother is so cheap. She once took my mom and brother out to lunch. She told my brother he could order off of the kid's menu. The only problem was he was like 35 years old. HAHA! My gran and her husband go to restaurants and they SHARE a drink, which I kind of feel is stealing. Her husband refuses to pay for his own drink so if they don't share he asks for a glass of water, with a bowl of lemon slices and he makes his own lemonade at the table. I think there is a difference in being frugal and just being over the top, haha.

She would mend her blouse until there was no more thread to sew on. My dad was the opposite, and would splurge on records (loved all types of music). We were very poor growing up. We never had snack food, like chips in the house unless we were going on a picnic, or sugar cereal. She canned, and made bread from scratch.

My favorite gift to give to newlyweds, or people moving to a new house, was the Consumer Reports annual guide. It was a paperback book, cost $9.99, and had reviews of all the appliances, cars, cleaning products, etc. so the people could save thousands, and get good appliances that work! I bundled it with some rags and home made gadgets, like a stretched out wire coat hanger for reaching things under the fridge. Of course, if it was a wedding, I’d include a Cheque.

It's to cut down on trash and things that are difficult to recycle. After all, it's reduce, reuse, THEN recycle. Recycle isn't first.

I wash and re-use plastic bags. I'd never throw one away before it had a hole in it. I had one piece of aluminum foil that was on a dish of leftovers someone gave me. I used that one piece of foil for years before it was too bad to use anymore. As long as it washed clean and didn't have too many holes, I used it. I've taken frugality to extremes at times (most of my life on almost everything), but I found a world of shoes that are the most well made and supportive, and most of the time, stylish, that cost a fortune. After I had one pair, I got rid of all the middle-priced to cheap shoes I had. I bought a pair of the extremely expensive shoes in black, one in brown and a pair of ran sandals. That was all I could afford. They're made in classic styles, so they can be worn for a long time. Over the years, I've added another 3-4 pairs of shoes. They cost a fortune, but I invest it in good shoes. Everything else, you can't believe how I pinch pennies. I've been known to light a candle so I don't have use the lights after dark. ($13 electricity bill!!!😊) I unplug everything, including turning the stove off at the breaker box and only turning it on while I use it and then off at the breaker box again. The ONLY thing I don't unplug is the fridge. Etc. I could go on, but I won't or else this will be a dissertation. I loved this video...all the remembering and laughing was downright therapeutic!

Sometimes you can get a super frugal person something framed as a "house present." For example, an oriental rug or an appliance or such. I put the kabash on gifts like flowers and jewelry. Instead, for one year I got garage doors to keep animals and insects out of the garage, another year I got an upright freezer, one year I got a world band radio. And this year I got a promise from my husband that we would overcome our fear and we would use the flame weeder in the garden. That was my gift.

I wash my plastic bags and reuse even the Food Saver bags. I do because I don't want to buy them and I don't want them going to a landfill after just one use. When I freeze meat I first flash freeze on a tray and then vacuum seal and when I take from the freezer, I put the meat into a container to thaw. This leaves the bag cleaner and a lot easier to wash so it's ready to use again.
