    Liliana was willing to give her life to screw bolas over. Gideon was willing to give his life to save a friend. One can argue about how characters are written, but let’s face it, Gideon was better written than most people like to realize. He was strong yet kind. People think of him as all muscles no brain, but he used his wit to convince the people of zendikar to stand with him against the eldrazi. He didn’t ask for anything when he gave help, and had faith in everyone being able to change. It’s why when everyone else was willing to abandon Liliana after the incident with bolas on Amonkhet, Gideon, literally with a fatal wound if he didn’t get medical help, was willing to aide Liliana on freeing herself from the contract. Liliana, who at the time felt everyone had an ulterior motive when they give help, since that’s usually what she had, was taken aback, to the point of feeling guilt over the contract changing ownership to bolas. Then in that final battle, when Liliana was going to break the contract and give her life, Gideon used his powers to make the contract take him instead, thus not only saving Liliana, but the multiverse. Gideon was also able to save Chandra earlier in life, even giving her the information on how to pass the trial. Sure one can take that as “goody goody justice man” but in the long run, Gideon was an action man not because it was easy, but because it’s harder to make a change than to say you can make the change.

    Absolutely this. The professor couldn't be more wrong in what he said in this video about Liliana being the only member of the Gatewatch who can be called a hero. His reasoning for including her are fair - although more related to bad decisions taken by WotC when they created the character than her actions in the lore -, but excluding the guy who ultimately inspired her to change her point of view was a huge mistake.

    Gideon not even being a proper honorable mention is saddening to me. Yes, he feels generic at many times and was not the most well written, but his actions really did inspire so many to change, especially Liliana. Like it is mentioned in the video, being a hero also means improving on yourself and not giving up, and I feel Gideon's origins really do help capture that feeling of trying to improve yourself even when you mess up. I very much understand not wanting to designate a spot on the list to him, but to only give him so little credit for only his sacrifice in Liliana's section when he was the one to help her when no one else would, I feel is genuinely unfair. Regardless, I still loved this video and would like to see more.

    You could argue he had a positive impact on several of the Gatewatch members. We all know how his sacrifice basically haunts Liliana, and stands as her personal beacon of true heroism. But there are others: he basically helped Chandra turn from a hot-headed, reckless, self-absorbed punk, into a proper student of fire magic, who genuinely helped others out of goodness (though it could be said that Jaya Ballard helped with this as well, but from a different angle). He also basically turned Jace Beleren from a socially-awkward, introverted nerd, with zero leadership qualities, into the guy he is today (still not amazingly heroic, but definitely more caring of others around him).

    I think Gideon deserves more recognition and I get the argument that a hero has to go beyond his own limits and expectations, but Gideon did that twice. In his backstory he learn a hard leasson on humility and because of that we see him being way more compassionate to his opponents than other planeswalker, best seem when he helped Chandra survive the Purifying Fire and gets to work his own trauma with emotional display through the course of ravnica as an ally of the Boros Legion.

    I’m surprised Liliana is above Elspeth considering all Elspeth has had to give in her life, getting tormented along the way, but still choosing to push forward for the good of the many. I don’t know how Elspeth can be born to torture, lose her found home, watch a world be corrupted and die, be tricked into killing her lover, be betrayed by her god, and be tormented with her worst nightmares in the underworld… and not be a broken hero. She has literally died and still fights for good. What more can she give?

    Both of them I absolutely adore as characters, but yes, ultimately, while Liliana has an extremely poignant redemption - Elspeth never needed to be redeemed at all, despite going through worse, so much worse, than Liliana. She always held on to her dreams of peace and happiness for others, she fought at every opportunity against the monsters that terrified her childhood and, unlike Urza, has been fighting the same monsters without ruining the lives of countless people.

  • @cosmicprison9819

    @cosmicprison9819

    The others here have said it already: Elspeth is a paragon, so she didn’t have to undergo a lot of character transformation. Those heroes can still be humanised by being reluctant to engage in combat etc., but ultimately, they don’t really have any serious flaws. Redemption arcs, such as for Liliana (think of Darth Vader) resonate with people much more. Because there’s more hope to be conveyed by a villain turning good than by a good guy doing good things. That’s why I still think Gideon’s sacrifice for Liliana greatly diminished her story. The War of the Spark trailer was one of the best cinematic spots ever done for Magic - precisely because it *didn’t* show Gideon swooping in to undermine the moment. Gideon may have had the flaw of hubris / arrogance starting out, but after having caused the death of his own friends, he pretty much becomes another paragon himself (much like Spider-Man becomes a do-gooder in the wake of Uncle Ben’s death). There is no other modern planeswalker with as many flaws as Liliana. Nissa could have come close, perhaps, but as the professor rightly pointed out back then, they retconned that out of her backstory, simply because “you can’t have a r*cist protagonist”. Yeah, remember that protagonists who go on a transformative arc need to have some kind of *misbelief* that they can learn to overcome? If Wizards wanted to send a message of tolerance, the best way to do that is not to cleanse their heroes of any bigotry a priori: It’s to take a bigoted character like Nissa and make her see the light over the course of the story, through her cooperation with people from other species and other planes in the multiverse. The greatest misstep the Magic Netflix adaptation can make (if it ever becomes a thing) would be to retcon Liliana’s “femme fatale” origins out of existence. Or worse, include those traits (vanity, selfishness, ruthless ambition etc.), but frame them as positives. Then again, the protagonist of the Netflix show, for all we know, seems to be Gideon.

  • @Ellie-bs5zq

    @Ellie-bs5zq

    @@cosmicprison9819 I mean, I agree, but ultimately, I don't believe that redemption makes someone a greater hero than someone who was constantly challenged and never abandoned their ideals. Elspeth lived an absolutely shit life, even more than Liliana, and never decided to just give in to despair. I admire Liliana for her redemption and sacrifice, just like other such redemptions and sacrifices are admirable - but at the end of the day, it's still only one moment, compared to people who make those choices again and again. Meanwhile in Nissa's case... yeah, you made me think how I really dislike them retconning her like that, especially since Nissa is still... often kinda awful? And for now, she's never gotten any better. She talks about saving worlds, but well... She falls in the ultimate trap Green and White have, which is to believe your own ideal is the be-all end-all of everything, and that it makes you more right than anyone else. And so far, that perception of her has rarely been challenged, and never meaningfully.

    I'm surprised Gideon is only mentioned in Liliana's entry. He absolutely is one of the greatest heroes in magics history, at least from my perspective. Always willing to protect the weak, always willing to get back up and fight, and ultimately willing to sacrifice his own life so that another might live. When I think "MTG Hero" - Gideon is honestly the one that comes to mind immediately. If it wasn't for Gideon, the entire fight with Nicol Bolas would've ended up completely differently. If it wasn't for Gideon, the populous on Zendikar would've been reduced to rubble. If it wasn't for Gideon, Liliana would be a slave to Bolas still. I think he deserves a top 5 spot, at least.

That pride lead to the death of his group at the hand of Erebos and later risked the Gatewatch members against Bolas, even after Ajani advising against it. I feel there's justifications for any perspective on Gideon, but personally I'm with ya. I often find characters like Liliana, who take a long windy road filled with potholes before becoming a hero, can be held up as far more remarkable than plain ol' Gideon. Reliably heroic quickly becomes routine, doesn't really make as much impact when Gideon does the right thing for the 100th time. Is he a big bland slab o' concrete whose deeds are far less compelling to follow than a tragic and conflicted character like Liliana? Absolutely. Do his consistent heroics trump many many others deeds? Quite likely. Edit: No shade to Prof though, he makes clear arguments for his choices, and this is obviously a highly subjective topic!

    Seeing Liliana in the top5 is really Not plausible, as even if she did had a tragic origin attempting to cure/save her brother, but that is not enough to just say "She changed her mind at the end for redemption" when compared to ALL the things she did for her own interests: 1- Willingly gave her soul to demons and the chain veil in exchange for power for her own 2- Fulfilled orders of said demons, killing/hurting many along the way (including Garruk) 3- When she got tired of something that she asked for (the contract and demons) started to manipulate and put others at risk for her own goals (the gatewatch) 4- When she finally "grew and seeked redemption" by standing against Nicol Bolas, it was GIDEON how took the Fall for Her... She is still a Villain (yes looks good on the eyes, but that is just marketing), just with 2 moments of ATTEMPTING good deeds at the beginning and in WotS, because most of her actions have been directed to satisfy her needs/desires for power and at the end OTHERs paid most of the cost. I could put her as 10-9th at most or maybe an honorable mention only PS: totally agree with the top3 of the list

    Gideon really deserved to be on this list. There is no Liliana redemption arc without Gideon. There is no Gatewatch without Gideon. Gideon's story of growing up gets forgotten all the time because by the end of Magic Origins he was a hero trying to be a hero already after learning from the hubris that got his friends killed, instead of a selfish person doing everything for selfish reasons. While I don't have a problem with Liliana being on the list as I do think her character arc is entertaining, Gideon not even getting an honorable mention is a travesty.

Phases out part of Dominaria and never manages to return it (therefore condemning it) -> Greatest Hero - Karn: reluctant to act, even to protect Gerrard (which he was designed to do). Creates and abandons Mirrodin while being, at the same time, the cause for Phyrexia's return. His part in saving Dominaria was because of what Urza had done and programmed him to do -> Greatest Hero - Jhoira: allows K'rrik to enter Tolaria and consequently almost leads to the destruction of most of the work that Urza and Barrin had done to protect Dominaria -> Greatest Hero - Urza: dedicates his whole planeswalker life to protecting Dominaria. Knows about his own flaws, so makes the defence against Dominaria independent of him and even prepared in case he fell. Created Karn, Teferi and Jhoira. Had flaws in his personality and did questionable stuff but all in order to save Dominaria -> Worst Evil, even worse than Yawgmoth - Liliana: does a lot of evil stuff throughout her life, has flaws in personality that lead her to terrible decisions and in the end redeems herself after being saved by Gideon -> Hero - Gerrard: the definition of hero. Has to see his loved ones (Mirri, Hanna) dying around him and sacrifices himself in the end so that Dominaria is saved from the Phyrexians -> Honourable mention - Gideon: has a life of heroism which include protecting Zendikar from the Eldrazi and sacrificing his own life for Liliana and for the defense against Bolas -> Not even good enough for a honourable mention - Barrin: Like Urza, dedicates his life to protecting Dominaria. Is the strongest opposition to the questionable stuff that Urza does (there's even the card named Opposition dedicated to this). Sacrifices his own life in the war against Phyrexia -> Ignored

    Thank you! This is the best post to this video. I was watching and waiting for my fav, Gideon, and was like ok cool he's top 3. While describing LIliana I was thinking, 4th place is good. Then he says, One of the Greatest Heros in Magic...Liliana! I said WHAT?!?! She did nothing heroic until she realized she couldn't defeat Bolas and decided to sacrifice herself to be done with it all, another selfish act! Gideon saves her and now shes unbound and can defeat bolas?!?! Gideon without even an honorable mention broke my heart honestly, Gideon is one of The Greatest Heros in MTG History.

    @@fluramba I can't say I ever liked Gideon, and I honestly think his death is one of the worst "heroic sacrifices" I've ever seen in any story - but you are SO right about Liliana. Helping to defeat an even worse villain isn't the same thing as redemption. Motivation matters. And Liliana was motivated entirely by "I don't want to be Bolas's slave". She decided that her own freedom mattered more than her own life, but it was still all about her. And then she proves that she hasn't actually grown or learned anything by doing exactly the same thing she's always done - run away as soon as it's convenient, because taking responsibility for what she's done, facing the consequences of her actions, and trying to make amends to those she has harmed is still not as important to her as preserving her own safety.

    Liliana is no more a hero than Urza. She had a change of heart after causing massive damage to many planes and had led an entirely selfish life to that point, and the pain and death she caused was entirely the result of her choices to attain power. If Urza's saving of Dominaria (via engineering of Yawgmoth's demise through the Nine Titans and Gerrard) doesn't stop him being a villain given his life of arrogance and self-centeredness, then Liliana's single clearly uncharacteristic moment of self-sacrifice shouldn't put her on this list.

    I'm not trying to demean a great list, but I personally cannot agree with the sentiment that only Liliana has earned the title of hero among the Gatewatch. I'm not an old player, by any means. Came in during Dark Ascension, still love to learn and read about the old stories, and appreciate them. But I think it's disingenuous to write off the new heroes for simply not being the old or as complex when they don't have novels devoted to them like the old ones did. And in particular, Gideon was heroic and though not as dynamic, still great alongside Liliana. Yes, Liliana became a hero. That doesn't make Gideon less of one. Chad was a bit boring, I get that. He was the Superman to Liliana's Batman, the vanilla flavor who was a standard hero trope. Sure, fair to say. He had a martyr complex ever since his hubris caused the death of his friends. He then spent decades working to right that wrong and help anyone he could, often to his own downfall. He lost to Bolas, made mistakes and trusted the wrong people. Had his faith shattered in front of him on a world he finally felt connected too again. And he kept standing up, pushing back, fighting for others. Bolas bested him twice, and when he saw his one man army strategy wasn't working, and that the best hope was his friend Liliana (who he stood by when the rest of the Watch left), he finally found a way to give his life not only to right the wrongs of his youth, but to save someone he *knew;* not martyrdom for innocent many, but for a friend, when he had been the death of friends before. I'm not saying the list is bad, far from, nor that Gideon should be higher than Liliana. Only that to dismiss his character by calling Liliana the only heroic one feels quite off to me. Still love your work, Prof. Just adding my perspective on this one.

    I think Gideon falls into the same category as Gerrard. He was the quintessential hero, but didn't have the same growth or depth of character as the rest on the list. He should have had an honorable mention, but I don't think he belonged in the top ten. As much as I like Liliana, I do think 4 was a bit high for her. Still, by the arguments and criteria presented in this video, she did deserve to be ranked higher than Gideon. She went on a proper journey and eventually discovered a new way of defining herself. From start to finish, Gideon has been the soldier to lead the charge. He is certainly admirable, but does not have a terribly deep character.

Just going to recount Ajani's deeds and heroics before WotC's storyboard team decided to defile a perfect character • was the best healer for his tribe and a selfless person despite being treated as a pariah • his first act as a newly ascended Planeswalker was literally to solo Nicol Bolas, stopping him from fully absorbing the maelstrom which definitely delayed Nicol Bolas' plans for mulitiversal domination by 10 real time years(not sure story timeline length) •Saved Elspeth from self destructive behavior caused by the Phyrexians(oh yeah let's just make Elspeths best friend a Phyrexian 🙄) • helped lead the aether revolt on kaladesh • was the only guy serious about recruiting allies for the war of the spark Oh yeah, and every where he walked to he was always looking to see if his friends that were there were okay first, the Cat was a real homie 😭 WotC should be ashamed of themselves

    I would argue that it took a mind like Urza’s to plan and execute Phyrexia’s destruction. Overly focusing on the collateral damage would have frozen him, hindering his efforts to a halt. In a way, a man in his position wouldn’t have the luxury of heroism, he just needed to get things done at any cost.

    While Kiora could certainly be called brash, careless, egocentric, and manipulative these traits often manifested in pursuit of a noble goal. When the Eldrazi invaded Zendikar, Kiora planeswalked to Theros and summoned a rogue wave that hit Meletis and caused much destruction to the polis. While this was a careless act, this was never her aim as she had only summoned the wave to call out to the creatures of the deep so that she might enlist their aid to repel the Eldrazi menace. Manipulation plays a part in letting the Tritons of Theros think she was an emissary of Thassa; even though she basked in attention through deception, she was all the while recruiting an army to battle the Eldrazi. She also manipulated Ajani and Elspeth later on into thinking she was Callaphe, as they were seeking the Temple of Mystery. Despite having her own reasons for the charade and assistance, nevertheless Kiora was an integral part of the journey leading heroes Ajani and Elspeth to their goal. After appropriating Thassa’s Bident, Kiora continued to build an army and joined up with Gideon’s forces to retake the Sea Gate. When the Eldrazi Titans appeared Kiora also helped keep the city safe repelling new waves of Eldrazi along with Gideon while the rest of the Gatewatch focused on the titans. In an effort to repel Ulamog’s brood, Kiora summoned giant octopus Lorthos whose size drew the ire of the Eldrazi titans who quickly cut it in half and then proceeded to wound Kiora. Thereby also bungling the plan to contain the Eldrazi within the hedrons. Despite failing, Kiora regrouped with the Gatewatch in their next plan to defeat the Eldrazi. In a critical moment of weakness during the fight Kiora considered the risk to Zendikar too great that these Eldrazi Titans become fully integrated into the plane. She attempts to undermine the Gatewatch but is thwarted and they manage to incinerate the titans anyway; ashamed Kiora planeswalks away. During the War of the Spark Kiora becomes trapped as were many planeswalkers when the Immortal Sun became activated. Once Chandra disabled the Immortal Sun, Kiora was one of the few planeswalkers who remained to help the Gatewatch overcome Nicol Bolas. There were many points where Kiora might have let her shame (ex. destruction of the polis, disruptive summoning of Lorthos, being wounded, failing the Gatewatch) stop her from attempting to help in the next great heroic charge against evil (Eldrazi, Bolas). Unlike many she recognizes her mistakes, while yes even making new ones. Critically her mistakes and character flaws never keep her down for long and she is there for the most critical battles to keep the multiverse free from tyrannical beings. There’s a nobility in her persisance to fight the good fight, and for that she deserves a spot in the pantheon of MTG heroes.

Or rather, that the preator Urabrask is actually a fusion of Slobad and the Mirrari corrupted by Phyrexia, but Slobad's lingering spirit is what has lead Urabrask to side with the Mirran resistance and that when we return to New Phyrexia (as foreshadowed by the flavor text of the double masters borderless printing of Mox Opal) we're going to see a purified Urabrask return to being Slobad.

    From what (admittedly little) I've been able to find and piece together, I'd say Sorin has done more good for his people than Liliana, and is a far better representation of "black mana =|= evil". He created Avacyn, helped to seal the Eldrazi, and one of his earliest drives in his lore was to try to stop his own fellow vampires from essentially poaching humanity to extinction. Sure, he may "like" humans in the same way that I "like" pizza, but considering that Nicol Bolas' entire history has to do with _his own_ species getting hunted to extinction (time travel shenanigans notwithstanding), Sorin's intervention may have very well stopped the creation of a Bolas-like insanely powerful and vindictive planeswalker born of a similar intent had he done nothing at all. He chose humanity over his own kin, even if that meant being seen as a traitor in their eyes, and the good he wound up doing for the people of Innistrad spanned generations. And when it all fell apart, at least it wasn't his fault, though that didn't stop him from setting things right anyway. All in all though, I don't think Magic has good enough storytelling to even _warrant_ a list like this. Character turns often don't make sense. Everybody talks like a quippy snarklord. Causality takes regular holidays. And that's all on top of the omnipresent albatross hanging over all multiverse-based stories: when you vary the setting that much, not every plane is going to matter to everybody. While I'd certainly _like_ to hear more Magic lore (What's the story behind Fleshtaker and The Meathook Massacre? What was Korvold like before and after being cursed by (presumably) Alela? Will Omnath ever go full WUBRG, and what would that look like? What kind of effect is Emrakul having on Innistrad after allowing herself to be bound to the moon? Does the corruption of Tamiyo have any effect on that binding?), what little I've been able to find has been more often than not completely disappointing. In fact, after discovering that Wizards has a section of their site devoted to lore cataloguing, I went and looked up the lore behind Wilhelt, a new commander I was looking at netde- er, building around, only to find out that he's literally just a stupid simp. That's it. Enthralling. Totally motivates me to shell out big bucks for the generic ramp I'll need to run another non-Green deck knowing it's all in service of this complete imbecile who can do nothing but pine for a woman who transparently hates his festering guts. And here I thought Dimir was the "underhanded genius" color combination. Speaking of weird Dimir characterization, I don't like Jace either for very similar reasons. You'd think he'd learn to put his Gatewatch duties before his love life. But there he goes, immediately hooking up with Vraska the moment he finally realizes that Liliana has been playing him the whole time... idiot. (Did he not know? I thought he always knew. Why take it so personally?) You'd think with Jace's history of getting used and betrayed by literally everyone he's ever known, he'd be more guarded and slower to offer his trust. I don't care how much chemistry he and Vraska have together, you'd think he'd want some time alone. I'm not saying you _couldn't_ put Jace in a relationship ever again. I'm just saying that the time to do so is not right after sending an assassin after his ex. If I were Vraska, I'd start keeping a written journal. Messing with memory is Jace's whole thing, and I question what his mental state will look like the next time we see him...

    @@ArchangelJaceAscended Maybe it's just me, but Jace seems like a poor man's Nick Fury. Not only is Fury a quick-thinking strategist (Blue), but he has a _notorious_ reputation for screwing with a few (Black) for the sake of the greater good (White) and everybody around him knows it. But Fury has that soldier's gravitas and the "I've seen some shiz..." to really stick the landing, no matter how much he must annoy Boros Cap or Izzet Iron Man. But Jace is just a bureaucrat and a pencil-pusher, a cog rather than an engine. _He's_ the one who follows shifty superiors, only to get screwed over for it. He'll always be personable and side with his friends when the going gets tough. He doesn't have the heart or the will to "do what must be done, even if it looks bad" or "make the tough call" unless Ugin tells him to. I _want_ to like Jace, and I'd love to see him go full Esper in a similar way someday. I just don't think the writers can pull it off.
