Who is the EOS R For?

The Canon EOS R is commonly disliked by the Internet, KZreadrs, and professional photographers and videographers, but I make the case that it isn't that bad as long as you are in the target audience for it.
Have a crop sensor Canon that you're out growing? Or maybe even an older full frame camera? Want to keep using your favorite lenses with as close to native performance as possible? Seriously, consider the EOS R.
If you replace your favorite lenses to switch systems, prepare for quite a price shock too.

    Quite frankly what defines a professional camera is convoluted. If you’re buying this camera you’re buying in early to the new RF mount. I’ve seen some entry level DSLR taking amazing photos. You can give someone a high end camera and take shitty photos.

    I think the Canon EOS r is for the semi professional, and sits in a funny spot. It is a bit too much of a camera for Ytubers, as we/I need to work quickly to upload content daily and you don’t need super quality as YT, insta compress the content. I have a 6D mark 2 and would say it is the best YTuber camera on the market, cheaper than the R, pretty light, low light is good, takes great stills, and has the necessary flippy screen for this application. Yes the R will do this job fine, but is a big price jump from the 6D mark 2, and is really an overkill and the native lens are expensive. The R could really shine if you do weddings etc, where the high grade content is going directly to the client, so it is not going via the net. The auto focus for stills is impressive and sharp, but has a low shoot rate for getting that moment, so is a in between camera between pro/high hobbist. This is where it falls down, it is a no mans land camera. This is where the Sony kicks a$$, it has features the pros want, and the cool looking 120fps, for Broll ytubers. With double card slots. I would buy the R if upgrading as I am use to the touch screen and have a few lens. But Sony is king currently in the mirrorless world, but the R does have some good points. 4K and 120fps, doesn’t make a camera better, it is about how the tool (camera) fits your application and upgrade line.

    It is a great camera for me: easy to use. I own a 5Dm4 and I use it with a 24-70 Tamron 2.8 and the R I use with a 70-200 Sigma 2.8. I might buy Canon lenses sometime when I know for sure that Canon lenses are much better than what I have. I shoot at Jazz and blues concerts in (very) dark places. Nice of the R is that you don't hear anything. I donnot film.

    I'm definitely looking at the EOS R. I have a 650D with a collection of 5 lenses. The EOS R is a huge upgrade for me in comparison to that; it still allows me to keep using my current lens lineup (including my EF-S lenses!); I really rely on a good flip-out screen, and none of its flaws are deal-breakers for me; I also don't need video, as I don't really... Do that. The most I do is casual video clips of my cat on my phone that I share with friends. And I have my phone for that. I get that it's not as good as its competitors on paper, but for me and my needs, and my lenses, it's a good choice.

    the issue is price. at most it should have been $2000, same price as a7iii and nikon z6. the 6dii didn't start selling until it massively dropped in price (its $1299 now). once this eos-r comes down to what it should really cost, probably 1799 or something, then no one's gonna complain anymore.

  • @AaronWChen

    @AaronWChen

    Fair point! I've noticed Canon tends to overprice cameras at launch (the 6D II you mentioned, the M50), but once they go on sale, they're quite a good value. IIRC, the M50 started getting waaaaay more love in reviews once it dropped down from $900. That being said, people switching from Canon to Sony seem to not see the price premium to get Sony's lenses; eg. 24-70 f2.8 GM is $600 more than the Canon L, which is almost 1.5x. Is it better to pay a higher initial cost for the body and less for the lenses or vice versa? To your last point, I would really like to see how reviews change for both the EOS R and the Nikon Z systems once prices change and there are more than just 3 lenses for each. Thank you for commenting! I appreciate you taking time out of your day for this =D Now go make some photos, haha

    Totally agree on price - if they sold a 2 slot 24 MP version at £1800 with a £200 Nd adaptor - I'd buy it now - and I'm a Nikon shooter. I believe it will drop in price over the next few months to about £1700.

    I can't see this logic. The R is better in nearly every way than a 5Div and $1000 cheaper. If you are just starting out then maybe anA7iii might be a good choice but Don't knock the R until you have lived with it for a while. It's the most enjoyable camera I have ever used!

    Hi - I agree about the C100 except it big and heavy and won't go on a gimbal easily. I've considered it but I travel a lot for my job and it's just to big. I shoot 1080 for an event company and from what I've seen the EOS-R has the best HD plus C-Log internally that is apparently very easy to grade plus I watched a potato jet review were they showed low light AF example - amazing it was tracking in near darkness - thats priceless. PS - I'm a Nikon shooter do obviously not biased towards Canon.

    Another issue besides the price is actually described in the video. Of the three cameras only the A7III has the speed, AF system and dual cards slots to be a full-fledged replacement to a DSLR system, while also being very strong in terms of video. Of course there are some other limitations/quirks (lesser EVF and LCD, smaller mount, not fully sealed, menu system, too small, etc.) but these two things can be deal breakers, but there are some 'bonuses' as well, like continuous Eye-AF, 10fps silent shooting and the best battery life. Both the Canon and Nikon are "designed" to be used alongside the DSLRs for now, that is probably the reason why both manufacturers purposefully handicapped their first-generation cameras, because they don't want to suddenly jump from selling one to another, the transition is purposefully slowed down. And as you said, switching out all the lenses is too expensive (the upcoming mirrorless lenses will be just as expensive as Sony's) so they are trying to capitalize on that fact (and Canon looks to have the edge over Nikon in terms of lens support, even though the latter looks very good on paper, I don't think it will sell as well).

  • @AaronWChen

    @AaronWChen

    5 жыл бұрын

    Good points! I think the fact that both canon and nikon worked so hard to get the adapters right showed that these new ones are kinda stop gap/sidecar cameras until their lens libraries build up. I omitted the dual SD card slot issue because I've never had an issue with just one card slot.... Although, when I rented the Panasonic G9, I did like having two slots. Thanks for such a thought out response! I appreciate you taking time out of your day to write 😊

    Totally agree with your line of thought, you are quite right and what is true of the dislike for the R has been and will be seen again in the future on other models and even from different manufacturers. In the case of Canon, some of the "howls of rage" are more akin to a kid's frustration at not being given their pocket money ! But you only have to look across KZread to see what is just click bait for desperate for clicks KZreadrs : "Why I sold my X and bought Y..." But I would suggest that there is another reality at play here and its all to do with the $. More photographs are taken today than ever before but all on smartphones, billions of which are sold every year though that too may be a falling market in the West due to oversaturation. Sales of actual cameras have fallen dramatically from 120 million in 2010 to 25 million in 2017 which in turn puts pressure on camera manufacturers to put everything including the kitchen sink into each model but this comes with a hefty cost penalty because there are higher R&D, tooling costs to recover so more unit sales are needed in a falling market ! This also has an impact on those who have hitched their wagon to doing photography related stuff on KZread etc, they have to fight for 'relevance' in order to keep their audience numbers up and what is clear to me is that some of the Channels and presenters I have loved in the past (I'll mention no names), are running out of steam and original ideas. With regard to the R, I am an existing Canon user and because of my investment in L series lenses, plus because of the adapters, it opens a pathway for me to add an R body to my kitbag, in fact I won't at this time/this model because my current DSLRs serve me well as a stills photographer but it gives me a future option. I have no use for 4k or indeed video, heck I've had that back in 2003 on my G5 and thought it an amusing novelty then and increasing the resolution still doesn't make it a must have for me today. Recently I have increasingly made use of wetfilm cameras alongside my digital kit and that is both thought provoking and an engaging experience but then, that's about photography not "male cosmetic jewlery" hanging around your neck to impress your friends :)

    Thanks Aaron for this good discussion about the EOS R. I switched to the EOS R from a EOS 6D because as you showed selling all my lenses Canon and Tamron lenses and buying a A7 III is way more money and the Metabone isn't like the EF to RF. This thing works even better on some lenses as on DSLR but at least as good. If you even have a mix of Tamron and Canon lenses you won't have fun with the Metabone. The other issue I have, the Sony is too small, the EVF isn't as good, no flip out screen (a joy to use if you need a different angle while shooting stills) and the menu system on Sony is not mine. So what are my options? You might say wait for the next EOS R (pro) but then we don't talk about 2499€ but more like 4000€. No way I pay this much even it gets the spec freaks excited. I have the camera since three weeks and nothing to complain about. Since the EOS R is a bit different in how to use many pro Canon shooter doesn't like it but actually if you use your new possibilities you are even quicker than with a 7D MKII for example setting the right AF point. So overall there will be a big market for the EOS R and its followers. The cameras are today that good it doesn't really matter what you are actually using for the 95% of the users. The other 5% have also their dream gear already out, so go and buy it. I expect no big steps in the near to medium future in the cameras. Even if you are new to photography I am not sure if Sony AIII is the best for everyone. Everyone should try before buy. The best specs don't help if you don't like the usage or the colours or size.

    This camera is for Canon users with existing Canon glass. It's a mirrorless little brother of the 5DMKIV. For its features and what it can do, it's overpriced compared to the A7III and Z6. It has less features and is less capable, but more expensive. But it doesn't matter because you can use your existing Canon glass. It should have been priced at $1599.

    I am going to partly disagree with your view that this camera is not for professionals. For Canon users it is a good b-roll camera. When using c-log the footage is practically the same as the c-200. The EOS R has the best codec of all the cameras. It has 450 mbps AI. For all of its praise, the A7III falls apart under heaving grading, and its 120fps at 1080p is soft. But for your primary camera you are right.
