Great commentary! Grace is one of the best songwriters out there and won AGT in 2016 at age 12 performing only originals. Her unique husky raspy voice and ability to emote is special. I hope you decide to check out more of her catalogue. She is 19 yrs old now and she is carving her own path instead of just trying to copy what everyone else is doing.

Hideaway was part of the soundtrack for the movie Wonder Park; it was written by a group of writers, with Jonny Shorr as the lead writer. He posted a note on his account thanking Grace "for bringing our song to life". (I hope this one stays up).

I’ll answer some of your questions, because I know everything about this girl 😊. The first song “Darkness Keeps Chasing Me” is her original. She wrote that when she was 13, if you can believe that. I think she’s 14 on the rooftop performance. Also unbelievable. The ‘Hideaway’ song is not hers. Someone else wrote that. It is an original in that it’s not a cover. It was written for the movie ‘Wonder-park’ and she was asked to sing this song for it. But, though she didn’t write that second song, don’t let that disappoint you, she has a vast amount of originals that are truly first class. It all started when on a whim she signed up for America’s Got Talent, in 2016, and won the show singing only originals, four different songs. All great, and she was only 12 years old. If you want to really explore this girl, that show is a really great place to start. I’m fortunate enough to have followed her from day one. I was watching that show when she came on live. When she sang he audition song I KNEW she would be the winner. I’ll post a link to a great montage of all four of those songs if your interested. It plays all four songs back to back. Plus you get the judges and the audiences reaction, which is great!. Sounds crazy but this girl’s original lyrics and melody and her voice, she’s just one of the greats. Great background info Don;t forget that she opened for Imagine Dragons and Florence and the Machine and starred in two movies. COVID put the brakes on her career, but she is coming back strong now. Great things will be coming from her very soon.

lol. I'm a big Grace fan and have literally follwed her since her AGT audition and this is one my favorite performances, but you're WAY, WAY over the top comparing her to Pink Floyd and .....the BEATLES???? You need help, really, you genuinely need to seek help. I'm worried about your ability to make it through life. They have medications that help..truly.

She is now 19 and has just moved on her own to NYC

No one has mentioned how multi talentive she is. In addition to her great song writing and singing she is also a professional model and movie actress. She has just completed her third movie and had the lead role in the first two.

Sorry my friend, but both “ Stargirl “ was a flop. In the new Scorsese movie she is considered by many movie makers as an“ Extra “ which in the industry means, we will call you if someone is sick or can not attend and perform seconds long appearances. About her multi talent I’m confused. Picasso or Einstein would hate that word, and would say, there is no such thing as multitalented person. You mentioned about her model talent and film star quality and said “ addition” to her songwriting quality and right there you shouldn’t say or mention anything else. Yes she is brilliant with words, but many American girls could wipe the floor with her in conversations. The problem with her songwriting is as it follows; to many words in just one sentence making other singers covering her songs almost impossible. Remember, less is more.

I am sure that you have already heard this from others. But let me repeat it, Grace wrote "Darkness" in 30 minutes at the end of a recording session for her album "Just The Beginning". "Hideaway" was written for Grace by a team of writers for the animated movie "Wonder Park".

And I still maintain that 'Just the Beginning', although Grace thinks it's 'cringy', is one of the best first albums I've ever heard. DKCM, I believe, is a masterpiece. 😎

At 12, Grace won AGT with 4 of her original songs at 12 playing the ukulele. Fender as released two Grace Signature Ukuleles.

Grace is an amazing vocalist and a thought-provoking lyricist and composer. She's also a very fun and quirky kid. One of my favourites. 😎

So glad you've discovered this wonderful artist. There are dozens of songs to pick from. One of her songs, "Beautiful Thing" was used in an award-winning Windex commercial, and is a guaranteed tear jerker. Anything from her "Letters Vol. 1" EP is great. I particularly like "I don't like you". Then there's "Today and Tomorrow " that she wrote while filming the Disney+ movie Stargirl. Lately she's wrapped filming her part in the new Francis Ford Coppola movie, and has been playing gigs in some small NYC venues to try out songs for an upcoming album. I'll try to find links. Two items - Darkness (we tend to abbreviate it as DKCM) was written by Grace in the studio time left after completing the scheduled work for the day - the accepted information is that the song was completed in under an hour. Hideaway, OTOH, was a contract gig - she was hired to lay down the vocal track on an existing audio and claimed she did it, portal to portal in about an hour. I'll post more info in a second post as it tends to get deleted by KZread. Great reaction, BTW. She does have an incredible voice which has deepened a bit as she's grown older - she was 14 on the rooftop and she's now 19. She does the occasional cover, in many cases better than the original; she has also fully produced a couple of songs herself. She produced "Happy Songs" with Garage Band, the freebie DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) on her Macbook. Columbia (her record label) sent her a pro-level microphone, a dual input mixer, and Logic Pro, an entry level pro DAW software package - and she produced "Faults".

That’s the accepted narrative surrounding _Darkness Keeps Chasing Me_ but like so many narratives being spun today, I ain’t buying it. The song is too good and too Grace to be an afterthought addition to the album. But I wasn’t there so… Peace

Both songs are great, Grace has an extraordinary ability to compose and on this occasion what impressed me a lot was her dexterity in writing something so profound being only 13 years old what makes Grace a great artist is that, in addition to singing very well, she has mastery of the stage and a very good interpretation is that as a gift she writes wonderfully, her work is beautiful, she is incredible! Grace did not write Hideaway, but she did Darkness at age 13, Unreal to write a song like this at such a young age.

💖 the rabbit hole “and those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music” nietzsche everyone has their grace vanderwaal rabbit hole story. this is mine: the first time i saw grace was during her agt audition. i was more impressed with the audience’s reaction than i was with the performance. “cute song, charismatic girl, great message, fifteen minutes of fame,” i thought to myself. then i heard _beautiful thing._ i could not wrap my head around how a twelve-year-old girl could have written such exquisite music. i went down the rabbit hole that night and when i finally came up for air, the landscape of music had shifted - there was grace and there was everyone else. the song which started this paradigm shift was _darkness keeps chasing me,_ which grace wrote when she was thirteen. the music, the lyrics, the vocals and the emotions were so melodiously woven together that i listened to it unfold in stunned disbelief. no song before or since has so seamlessly fused the ethereal light of beauty with the dark darkness of hell. the song is so affecting that one must be in a proper frame of mind to receive it or risk spiraling downward towards the abyss. no doubt her handlers at _columbia records_ attempted to exclude the song from the album because it did not fit the “image” they were trying to create for her, but grace being grace pushed for its inclusion because this was her song, and her declaration to the world of what was possible from the most important singer-songwriter of her generation. grace’s second ep is a collection of _letters_ written to her generation about the excesses of her generation. the _intro_ to the ep, _gucci shoes,_ is a scathing exposé on the nihilism that pervades today’s youth. it is the wellspring from which the rest of the music flows, and joins _beautiful thing_ and _darkness keeps chasing me_ as the three defining songs which set grace apart from her peers. grace spent the first six months of the lockdowns cooped up at home so she took to social media and gave us some of her best performances to date. there are few experiences in life as pleasurable as listening to grace sing in an intimate setting accompanied by just her ukulele or guitar. her renditions of _lungs, bored of me, today and tomorrow_ and _i love you_ highlight the rich vocal tone which distinguishes her from other female singers and allows her to _embody_ emotions in her music. grace then produced a handful of originals and covers by jazz legends and folk heroes alike in search of a sound which would define the next phase of her evolution, a sound which found its genesis in _like can’t you see._ after heaping all of her pent up anger and frustration upon the student body with all the _rage_ she could muster in a farewell performance for the ages, grace left the hellscape of _interlochen_ and returned home a doll made out of glass. when she finally broke, she started her descent (once again) into hell. but grace _made it out alive_ from the dark darkness and brought with her a slew of new diary entries highlighted by a trifecta of songs better than anything anyone not named grace vanderwaal has produced in years - _just kids, made it out alive_ and _let me hate you._ grace is nineteen years old and has already created a catalogue of music unrivaled by any of her peers. as good as her music has been, it is _just the beginning._ grace has embarked on the next leg of her journey of self-discovery. the world is not ready for what is to come but we are because we have seen how deep the rabbit hole goes. the amazing grace vanderwaal

Holy smokes I was expecting you to actually check her out, she is one of my favorite new artists that won AGT in 2016 and was phenomenal with all of her original songs she wrote and composed at age 12. She has a very distinct voice and got popular very quickly and she managed to release an EP and a full album and many singles. Nowadays she hasn't done much and haven't really heard much about her. One thing you will find out is that most of her songs were written on the ukulele and she does play quite a bit on her live shows. The Wonder Park is an animation that adopted her as the music host. In several interviews, she was explaining that she need a break from all the fuss that everyone was making over her fame, she literally shut down and she wrote and compose this very deep song called Lion's Den and it basically explains what she felt and thought a lot about. Not many adults have a craving for child voices that is why I consider Grace the Greatest adolescent voice in history. Queen G. It appears after 6 years Reactors are jumping on this song but I expected people would be discovering her song "Beautiful Thing" about now. She was emotional on all her early songs, she still has the emotion but not as heavy. The beginning of the song sounds like her nose is a little plugged up from the roof top weather. Now every time I hear a Ukulele start I start getting emotional since Grace has struck me so many times. Now you have a good idea why Angelina Jordan fans come to her reaction videos to diss her. I see you did a April Wine reaction. I love that band. Two more of their songs that are great are "Enough Is Enough" and "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen." If you want to see another great Canadian band you should check out the Tragically Hip.

She’s way more talented talented

I don't think this song was written by her. Started out with her uke; lately more into tock, so uses a guitar now. It is the sound tract of a kid's movie animation. Studio produced.

As far as I am concerned, her creative juices have dried up. However, maybe her desire to move on to other things has taken root and she will flower in another venture some day soon.

Her popularity and fame may have diminished since her time on America's Got Talent. But there is no more creative artist out there today then Grace VanderWaal. Her creativity has exploded since her time on AGT.

You haven't been paying any attention at all if you truly believe that. Grace has written dozens of songs over the past few years. She also just took part in the NY Anti Social Writers' Camp, where she got top billing among the 150+ other artists. One of the artists that she collaborated with at the camp described her as a "magical genius." If her creative juices were "dried up" as you say, people, especially other artists, wouldn't pay her such huge compliments.
