Who is God? Thoughts from Thomas Keating (audio only)

What is your attitude towards God? This might be the great question for our time. It raises the issue of your relationship with God. Do you believe in God? How do you feel about God?
By a series of reflections on the scriptures, events in the lives of the saints, and world tragedies, Thomas Keating unfolds the mystery of the question “Who is God?” by letting God introduce God's self to us. The key is found in Matthew 6:6 and its application to the practice of Centering Prayer. Through this prayer practice, one begins to experience one’s basic goodness and the need for the unloading of the unconscious in the hands of the divine therapist. This is a key to an open mind and an open heart.

Fr Thomas is just so kindly and thoughtful 🙂 even when he basically says "Show me Your God and I will show you who you are" 😳🫢 Myself , Im really giving a lot of thought to 'what do I REALLY believe' because I believe my experiences of transcendence and contemplation are truly reality. But it is surprisingly hard to do that George Orwell doublethink thing and hold one reality and exist in a parallel universe that is modern western society🤦 Im currently asking God for the opportunity to be an anchorite for a few years, I have some suggestions for how that might occur🤔 Im giving God a bit of space to figure it out👍👍😂

"Who is God?" What an engaging question. May I take the rest of this life to answer? Indulge yourself, clothe God with attributes deemed valuable. Wear Him on your cuff. Or be free from opinion and simply say, "I am."

The ancients had God's that are now abandoned, we were born into a time of the old God's called Jesus and God, or Yahweh, or whatever, but they are just God's to rule us, invented by people from the past. Abandon all God's.

How does he even know that this loving presences is "god" _in any sense_ at all ? And even if it is, the fact remains, as he himself says, that this god is not interested or capable of removing our suffering as a person. Apparently his love then is only directed towards our true being, but not the personal creature we think we are. At 1:06:10 it becomes obvious then that he is _not_ speaking about the just god that the bible reports on, yet he calls him the god of Israel and the christians. What makes him think that the god of his experience has anything to do with Yahwe ? At 1:08:35 he explains suffering or evil as necessary for the full extent of understanding god. So it is a sort of growth pain which will be relieved and overcompensated. But that would imply that full understanding was _not_ primordially present in god himself, that god was primordially ignorant about himself, at least in some measure. How is that a perfect god ?

God God is the Lord of hosts. Besides Him, there is no God (Isaiah 44:6). God told His Son to “sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool” (Psalm 110, Matthew 22:44). God is the only one who knows ALL things: “But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not even the angels in heaven, NEITHER THE SON, but the Father” (Mark 13:32). God created and raised Jesus from the dead (Colossians 1:15; 1:18). This is the meaning of prototokos-birth order, first child born. God will quicken all who belong to him with His power and spirit that dwells in us, the same power and spirit that dwells in Jesus and raised him from the dead (Romans 8:11). God sent Jesus to show us His Way, His Truth, and His Life because those who do not choose the Father have chosen death. It is God who we must be reconciled to through Jesus Christ, for it is the Father who is the greatest of all (John 14:28).
