Who is Generation Z?: Events, Experiences & Characteristics

This video is about Generation Z / Gen Z, the generation after Millennials. They are the "new young people". Watch and learn the key events for gen z, including their "big event" as well as some of their characteristics and opinions.
Gen Z events covered include larger social movements, historical events, and some of the technology / technology-related subjects introduced during the early lives of Zoomers. I talk about some of the technology which pre-dated them and what came along as different Zoomers were growing up. (Some somewhat notable things accidentally got left out like air pods and Twitter). The Generation Z characteristics section includes things like demographics, mental health, and some traits.
Note that this takes a bit more of a U.S. perspective and some ideas could be considered generalizations.

Do a video on Zillennials, the microgeneration cusp of Gen Y and Z. We're born from like 1993/1994-1998/1999. I think we are the most interesting cohort because we got to experience the change from basic technology like dial up all the way to smartphones when we grew up. Also I think Gen Z is usually referred to as 1997-2012 according to most articles and Millennials are 1981-1996

Thanks for the feedback! I've gotten a couple other messages about interest in Zillennials so I'll work on getting that out soon! It might not be the next one but I will do it :) It is an interesting cohort. And true, those are common birth years (because they are what PEW uses) so they are the years I went off of mostly but I just like to acknowledge that different people use different years.

Born 1998. My first memories. The wars starting. I dont remember 9/11 but I grew up in the years after. The anger and pain mixed with the war. In 2004 that got more intense. 2008 the recession. It hit us hard and we lost a lot. We had to stop cleaning trips and other luxury due to money. Yet more fear. It was also the first I had been exposed to a presidential election. I voted for McCain. My middle school held an election. 5th and 6th grade voted for McCain. 7th and 8th for Obama. Our primary reason for McCain was his military service. But the older you got the more Obama appealed. I was republican in views during his president years. However. Life hit hard. Lost a lot. Nearly homeless. Couldn't afford to eat sometimes for a week at a time. We were in poverty. During this time my mental health was destroyed. From my mother and fathers abuse and the situation I found myself in. I tried to kill myself many times. Almost did once. 2012. I didn't pay much attention to this election. Too busy with my life and wasn't sure what to think anyway. All I knew. I wanted to be a soldier. And if I died a heros death id be happy. Note at this point I'd had very limited interaction with the outside world. I had only ever had a flip phone. And I still to this day remember my childhood landlines phone number. 2013 I met my eventual friend and best friend. We'd call each other brother. He wanted to join the marine first recon. Me the army rangers. We were very alike. As we got older we grew different politics. I became more centrist and he right wing. Amanda todd kills herself at some point and he is the first person outside my family I told about my mental issues and the suicide attempts. Brothers to the end. I got xbox360 and spent any free time on it with him. To escape my world. 2016 bernie sanders. He awoke the pain I had and made me questioned what I believed. I became a Democratic socialist. 2021 I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. And im now a proud socialist.

Sometimes we take things for granted but life will change things. Gen z had to go through a lot. At least the older among us. This is my life experience, but I'm sure similar events hit people. It give prospective that I think a lot of kids need. Im happy now. Got a gf of almost a year. Getting better mentally. And I think im stronger for what I experienced. Once I managed to get out of my own head I think to myself well shit I survived all that my coworker or boss being a dick isn't so bad. I truly wonder how the past 20 years have effected this generation. Only time will tell. Thank you for taking the time to read and replying. I doubt any of this will help you or anyone else but who knows. My and your journey has just started. So make the most of what and who you have while you still do. A quote I've lived by for a long time. A man with nothing to die for has nothing to live for. Not the exact quote. No matter how bad things get. You need to find a reason to keep fighting. A reason to keep improving. I know just how tempting giving in sometimes is. But we always need to find that reason. I hope the best for you. And yes I tend to ramble. A lot. Lol

I remember my friends and I sitting around our lunch table in our freshman year of highschool (fall 2017) talking about how we would escape the building from any given position in the building. I remember laying awake at night "quizzing" myself so I felt some form of control over the fear. This was a year before Parkland and right after we had a HUGE school shooting scare. I had had false bomb threats happen in middle school that ended up being prank calls (although the building was still evacuated and school was still called off), but this threat was a whole different beast. It ended up having merit to it but the police got to the student's house before it was supposed to happen so we were all physically fine. I know most of the school didn't show up on the day it was rumored to be "scheduled" (I did because my parents are the type to make you go to school even when you're very clearly sick and end up being sent home later). The whole atmosphere was different for a few weeks and then it pretty much went back to "normal" except now anytime I think about a school shooting I remember my "escape plans" and how our teachers tried to console us. Through tears they told us that we were safe, and promised if something did occur they were ready and willing to sacrifice their lives to subdue the threat(s) to save as many of us as they could. They were shaken just as much as we were and had plans of their own for any worst-case senario. Next year we had another threat but it wasn't a serious so we were all still on edge but less people skiped school and we didn't have conversations with our teachers like the year before. Then three days after the threat Parkland happened so it was like a second round of the previous year. Anyway, obligatory mention on how we should enact stricter gun laws so students don't feel like they need to spend time worrying about the logistics of how you can defend yourself from a shooter with a textbook, pencil, or a knife if you're lucky and happen to be in culinary class during the event. I remember praying that if there was a shooting that I would be in my sewing class so we had access to irons and other heavy equipment as well as a window on the first floor that was located conveiently on the side of the building facing the thick woods to run and hide and call for help in. I don't think another generation of kids should have to think those thoughts at 13 or even younger (or older, for that matter).

As someone born in 2001, I am definitely proud to call myself a zoomer! But I don't agree that the ending year should be as late as 2012. While I don't relate to the 80's and 90's cultures which most Millennials grew up on, I definitely don't relate to the TikTok and Fortnite kids, that are still a part of the same generation as me and many others I've talked to. In-depth explanation what I mean by "TikTok and Fortnite kids", kids who grew up with smartphones, streaming services, online gaming, pretty much anything related to the internet etc. for almost their entire childhoods. While for me, those didn't become a part of my daily life until I was a pre-teen (age 11-12), my later childhood. Since I grew up with dumbphones and handheld gaming consoles, physical media, local multiplayer gaming, mostly offline world etc. Only the rich kids had online access at the time. I and many others around my age simply didn't have internet access on our own during our elementary school years, as easy as kids (who are still a part of gen Z) have nowadays. I even still remember living in an era where VHS was still relevant for a couple of years, before Blu-Ray hit the scene. Because of how different early zoomers are to late zoomers, it has created this big divide online according to early zoomers, as they like to call themselves "true gen Z" or something like that. In my personal opinion, I think there should be an in-between microgeneration (like Xennials) that is in between Millennials and Gen Z, and the starting and ending years should be 1996-2003. Or they should shift the ending year of Gen Z to somewhere to the mid-late 2000's (somewhere between 2006-2009), because I associate kids born after 2010 more with Generation Alpha. In a nutshell, I don't relate to a child who has gotten a smartphone, or grew up in an online world before the age of 10. Because I and many other kids my age at the time didn't have. But anyways, great video. I just wanted to tell my point of view as a zoomer born in 2001 who only relates to people born between 1996-2006. This doesn't mean I hate people born after 2006, I have two younger siblings born in 2010 and 2014 respectively, whom I love very much. I just don't consider myself as a part of the same generation as my 2010 brother, and I associate him more with the generation my 2014 sister is in (Generation Alpha).

I agree with you. Like I was born in 2002 but I can't relate to children of 10 and below. It seems like they live in a completely new mindset. Like there are a lot differences. I remember when I was younger, my mom still had her film camera (which of course, I don't know how to use) and my mom used to own those old digital cameras. And the more late gen z's are more into the newer technology. And they are way too smart for their age. When I was in grade 1, I was very childish and didn't know what I was doing. And the later gen z's act more smarter about things they shouldn't know about in their current age.

Millennial born in 93 - growing up and every generation around me we NEVER thought we would see a black president in our lifetime. Or to be honest just a non-white-man. Sadly when it happened we immediately feared and expected the worst (that he might not survive long). Also with the LGBTQ that was a HUGE fight growing up and in high school - the way we have gotten to the other end of the spectrum from intolerance and legal discrimination to now damn near forced/over representation in so short of a time is so mind blowing!

Hi Niiish 46 :) The answer is: most likely, yes! There are some definitions which actually extend the Millennial generation all the way to 2000 but these days most people like to end it around 96 making you a member of Gen Z. Since you're towards the beginning of the generation, it would be fairly accurate to say you're an older member of the generation.

It can feel random at times but they use events/experiences. For example - remembering 9/11 is something considered to make you a Millennial as it had a large impact. 2000 is when half of Americans had the Internet and computers at home so basically most Millennials will remember a time before that and generally Gen Z won't. Those on the cusp may have varying experiences. All generations will have some variation in experience because they all last around 15-20 years. That is surprising to me that you aren't familiar with it as it was a major event though I'm not surprised you wouldn't have heard about it at the time since you were so young. It sounds like you may be in that transitional area between the Millennial Generation and Generation Z so you are also kind of "in between" experiences. Generational "events" tend to be based more around the "core" members of generations. I do agree that Sandy Hook and Parkland (and Columbine for that matter) could almost be more influential to those who were a little older at the time for other reasons. Some of those who were in school for Columbine were becoming teachers (I know someone who taught near Sandy Hook, for example) and parents by the time Sandy Hook and Parkland came around and were of voting age so that can all change the perception of these events. And maybe those born around the time you were have their own unique take. I think possibly one of the differences between Millennials and Generation Z in this respect is that Gen Z was/has been in school at a time where these kind of events had become a lot more common (the frequency had really increased, at least for a while) whereas for Millennials growing up it felt newer. Still, since it's difficult to truly measure impact, it's possible these specific events/types of events aren't excellent generational markers relative to others or in general.

Hmm, something I'll have to look into since there may be recent changes for Gen Z as they've been coming of age

    I'd argue I'm gen Z...(late 96)...as I barely identify a Millennial. Heck I've had family members argue that I'm gen Z.

That's okay, it's a very cusp-y year! I think I've gotten 96-borns who have said they really identify with Gen Z, and some with Millennials, some really just feel like cuspers! Some definitions of Millennials do end it in 95, so under those, you would be Gen Z anyway. It just varies of course.
