If you try taking a backwards, or reverse-engineering-view of the 8-fold path, you should find that these are natural, everlasting features of nature. As I walk through the tenderloin in SF, witnessing virtues and vices of all qualities and quantities, I find that everyone already regards what's right as what's on the 8-fold path, and regards wrong as what's contrary to it. Everyone is already a Buddhist, they just haven't seen it yet because they all regard it as so obvious! How then do the appetites have such power that we already know, and yet try to say that we don't? I saw that I could experience the bodily pleasures that are only felt through the agony of another...let me therefore remain wide awake and content with simplicity... neither virtue nor vice.
