WHO HAS TOUCHED THE SKY? USAF 1972 RECRUITING FILM T-38 TALON 23722

Created by the USAF in 1972, "Who Has Touched the Sky?" is one of the most famous recruiting films of all time. The inspirational film discards conventional narration for sweeping imagery and shots of airmen at work. From PT and the T-41 to the Link trainer, the T-37 and T-38, this movie was filmed at Laredo AFB in 1972 and culminates with a breathtaking T-38 training flight, formation and single ship, with the song, "Who Has Touched the Sky" in the background.
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. This film brainwashed me (in a good way). Didn't pass the flight physical...(USAF just couldn't see the value of blind pilots!!!), but did serve 29 years, served in 5 AFSCs, as a squadron and deployed wing commander, and retired as an O-6...even got my taste of operations and crewlife in SAC ICBMs...the Air Force was my family. Fond memories.

Class 71-04 at Willie....it was an unbelievable experience learning to fly!! Nothing like being the pilot in a T-38!! Although I spent the next few years piloting a T-29, I'll always remember going 0 to 10 miles high in 90 seconds!! Also, I lucked up and didn't have to go to Vietnam! Sacramento CA was great flying navigators around. My last year sucked at Campion AFS AK but I was proud to have served in the USAF!!

Hard to believe that more than 47 years has passed since I got my wings and I miss it every day, especially being in a squadron with great fighter pilots. Enjoyed seeing John Wittenborn in the film; another guy just back from UPT in my first squadron. Thanks for sharing!

My wife told me that you were asking for comments relating to the video. I was a Canadian exchange instructor at Laredo between 1970 and 1973, and although I don't specifically remember too much about the filming, I flew the photographer for at least one of the formation sequences. The video is a compilation of several flights, and the pilots involved in the Laredo flying was done around the regular training duties. I also remember power cables for the filming equipment strewn all over the floor, while the filming crew was there. The T-41 (Cessna 172) primary flying was all done at the Laredo civilian airport, which was located west of the base, and down near the river north of Laredo. Although I knew a number of instructors on the T-37 side, I could not identify anyone from the video. The instructor talking to the students, and demonstrating with the T-38 model, is Frank Gullick, who was a member of my flight. I remember the face of one of the students, Laurent, but am sorry to say that I don't remember the other two. A typical instructor had three or four students. At that time, I had the job as the flight scheduler, so my attention was on the airplanes and not so much on any students other than my own. (BTW, I don't remember the fancy T-38 models, I think we did all our gesturing with our hands). The filming of the ground handling and the formation takeoff, as well as the majority of the formation in the video, was done in Laredo. The takeoff was done toward the south, and you can see the lake in the distance. There is formation footage from some other location compiled into the later part of the video. I have no idea where this other footage was filmed, but I don't think the aircraft tail numbers belong to Laredo . I have no recollection of the twilight sequence at the end of the video. I have my old log book and because I was in the Check Section, as well as Stan Eval, I flew with a lot of different pilots, both students and instructors. It was a busy time, but the people were great, and it was a wonderful, memorable, experience. Bob

Hi Bob in my situation.. As a new young first term crew chief stationed at Holloman My pilot was Capt Marty Holland. I looked him up and he retired as a BG not long ago. It’s interesting to see how people you interacted with 40 years ago and how they ended their military careers. My jet was 65-10341. About 15 years ago I was doing research and found out it crashed in 1990 near Capitan NM routine training mission. I ordered half of the accident report. Too bad I thought I’d get to see it sticking in ground as a static display somewhere.

I was in Willie 72-02, and a plow back IP at Willie from March 72 to Nov 74. I had one of those fancy plastic models. They were very solid and just classy. A neighbor kid came in one day when I wasn’t around and destroyed it. Never have been able to find anything like it since. Wouldn’t trade the 4 plus years I spent in the cockpit. After Viet Nam ended, flying time was cut way back. Spent my last 22 months behind a desk in Operations. That was tough.

Class 71-08 at Moody. The T-38 is the coolest plane ever built. I still think about it after having flown the C-5, DC-10, and MD-11. Went from Moody to Wiesbaden, Germany, flying the C-97G doing photo and electronic Recon in the Berlin Corridors. Saw lots of Mig-21s but they couldn't do anything about us. Look up the Berlin for Lunch Bunch or the 7405th Support Squadron for a little Cold War History on a mission that went on for 40 years with no shoot downs or crashes in enemy territory.

I've logged 550+ wonderful hours in that White Rocket. If you took time to review other comments under T-38 videos, you would see other pilots who flew it ALSO refer to it as the White Rocket. Another thing--All USAF jet pilots were officers. I suggest you take your "crappy" comments & troll some juvinal chat room were you sound like you belong. I hope some day you learn to respect US Veterans! It would mark a vast improvement in your otherwise crappy character. Thank you very little... To Mark G. Amen to the white T's & shorts. I gave the armed forces of Norway a run for their money. We have conscription. My challenge is I am born with Cerebral Palsy. In Norway I was part of a baby boomer generation. Let us say they needed 55-65` a year. The total number of men was like a 150` so they did not need all the men, just some. I have light to moderate CP. My tour of duty was over before it had started. I got no twice, and the third time the letter stayted: If I see one more letter from you, I will take this to HRH the King! Today I regret that I did not send one letter. In Norway at least the armed forces are the only employer that with law in hand, so to speak that can discriminate on a physical reason. They told me in a case of war that they can not cater to my needs and handicap. This is now over 30 yrs a go. I do not think things have changed much since then. Thank you for your time. God bless.
