Shirly..not saying Kelly can't sing. Its just more passion from the Originals.

I love Kelly Price's voice and she did a good job but there's no replacing the original version by Shirley Murdock, Shirley Murdock absolutely killed it, her vocal range and runs are insane.. and because of that her version, the original, is a one and only absolute classic and can't be duplicated nor outdone..

This is a straight up classic and NO ONE can tourch our girl Shirley on this one. The pure emotion and rawness she exudes is incredible.

Honestly, I love both versions of the song! Shirley put more of her soul into it but Kelly has that powerful voice. I give them both credit for that!

Its Shirlz World last time I check. Respect to KP tho💯

I'm from the era of the original Shirley Murdock....hence my vote of appreciation. Kelly Price was also great.

Aunt Shirley's 😀 mix was authentic and natural, K.P. had to much going on in instrumentation. So Shirley, by far, wins on production quality and for riding with the groove.

"As We Lay" wow! Both artist moves my heart and makes me feel those vibes and it is truly a hard choice for me. I would have to go with the original Shirley Murdock. Then again that Kelly Price, "Oh My God" when she gets deep into that song, she moves my heart. That Kelly can really sing it out~We forgot about tomorrow as we lay. Man~ I feel that ending with Kelly Price, Sweet!

Shirley Murdock did it the best . We had a debate about this song when Kelly Price did it the young folk got mad 👍 We know who did it the best

Though Kelly remains one of the best female R&B singers of our time, this is the comparison of a great cover versus an all-around R&B Classic. Shirley's hauntingly beautiful vocals combined with the then-unknown ballad talents of the late Roger and Larry Troutman, made for one of the best R&B songs ever recorded. Winner: Shirley! 🐰

Smh people are so biased, especially when the original artist is underrated. Shirley’s version came first and is a great song. She’s a great singer & the song holds a lot of nostalgia. That being said, Kelly’s version is better. Her voice sounds far more mature than Shirley’s, the musical arrangement has a more timeless quality (Shirley’s sounds 100% 80’s). Also, Kelly’s riffs & ad-libs at the end sound way more passionate & authentic. Shirley sings it like a young girl who did something naughty. Kelly sings it like a grown ass woman who let a situation go too far.

@@timmy841212 Nothing to do with their actual age. I said Kelly's voice sounds more mature-- lower, darker, with a huskiness to it. Shirley's voice is bright & clear. A more youthful sound.

That's the one us young girls would try to sing, even if we didn't know what the lyrics were REALLY saying ..lol ...and that woman just has one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL voices, which can, also, get VERY POWERFUL ..ANYONE who votes Kelly MUST be of a younger generation, and don't, really, remember when the original song came out ..Plus, I'm down with the Zapp/Troutman production.

I love Kelly Price, but this Shirley Murdock's song, though Shirley's is a remake too as you pointed out, but Shirley's version is the Best Version of this song!

This was a hard choice for me.. Two very powerful singers. Of course Ms. Murdock, created a wonderful rendition, that can't be duplicated. Ms. Price, didn't try too.. She took a powerful song and made it her own.. The lyrics still there, but the instrumental and the emotions, all hers. And, for just the audacity to try it.. I'm giving this one to Ms. Price.. My opinion, of course.

Now this was super hard!!! Very challenging!!! Both Artists vocals are amazing, love the instrumentals in Kelly version but also love the smoothness of Shirley version as well... The thing that got me was the emotions behind the song. Shirley sound like she lived that song vs Kelly just sound like she was remaking the Song. With that being said I will have to go with Shirley Murdock with this one, only because of the passion she had it speaks volume!!! Kelly My Girl Though!! So Yea I shocked myself with this one!!! Shirley Murdock!!! 🖤
