I own two SLW’s and would say they are the gold standard in models. I’ve got models from all the major manufacturers and they just don’t compare

Totally agree, also the base model from Bachmann is being compared with the top of the range one from SLW.Base for base models, they're not that different, but sound wise, because of the speaker arrangements employed,SLW's 24 will always win.I love my two as well.

I meant to say,not that different in price as base models.Buy a dcc sound chip and a pair of iPhone speakers and all of a sudden, the Bachmann offering is uncomfortably close to the SLW's offering, for so much less in the ownership experience.

The SLW SULZER Type 2 is a far better model, just look at the body side grills. If you remove the body there's detail on the cast chassis behind the panels.

I have to admit that the SLW Class 24 does it for me. It is a far superior locomotive in terms of detail and overall performance. I have an old Bachmann Class 24 and will be selling this in due course. Cant wait for the SLW class 24/1.

I'm a green period guy but hey they both look fantastic but overall think Sutton's one did it for me because the side grill panels looked better!

The 24/0 were the first 50 locos that had a separate exciter on the generator. The 24/1s were all the rest. Whether they have a headcode box or discs has nothing to do with it. Of the preserved class 24s, only one is a 24/0.

When SLW announced the 24 in RTC livery I just had to have one and go the full hog and get it sound fitted. It is a lovely loco and the pride of my fleet.

Delighted to say I purchased the SLW with sound and stay alive. Delighted is frankly the biggest under-statement I have ever made regarding loco purchases. This beast does not compare to Bachmann or any other rtr supplier frankly. It just oozes quality. From the moment it arrived the opening was incredible; never have I seen such professionalism with packaging!!! I could go on and on but really the 24 does not need me to speak volumes, it does it all by itself. Having bought some rtr models in the past at £175-£200 then paid to get sound fitted professionally, I paid more in the end that a SLW cost me. I'm now saving hard to buy another SLW 24. Thank you though for the video; just not a comparison that is fair.

i think the glazing and thinner metal handrails are a bit better on the slw version, but apart from that very similar (just going on the video, ive not looked at them in real life).

Top marks from me for allowing easing out to EM or P4. Ihave always coped in steam by replacing axles, wheels and, usually, scratchbuilding a replacement underframe. Sadly, I have never been able to tackle any diesel beyond a four-wheel railbus.

Thanks Jenny for putting together this comparison. I think it's confirmed for me my next purchase will be the new Bachmann Class 24. If it's mostly comparable to the SLW 24 for detail, and even better on traction power, then £127 for the Bachmann (Rails) is more favourable than £295 for the Sutton.

Hi, I have a Sutton Locoworks Class 24 from their latest batch, I think your slightly out with your price comparison there. Mine was £330 for the all singing loco with sound and stay alive, but you get a model which is almost museum quality and has a superior mechanism, along with sound to blow your socks off. Compared to a sound fitted factory bachmann loco, which I think you'd be looking at around £250, but that doesn't have a stay alive and has a more generic mechanism. So if you compared prices exactly like for like, your actually looking at around £50 extra for the Sutton Class 24, which I think you will agree is a far more appealing thought.................Those are just my thoughts, I have never heard anyone say they were disappointed with a Suttin Locoworks Locomotive, and they do sell out real quick...............Anyway, just a few thoughts that came to mind reading the comments. Best regards Dave.

@@stretchedits I'm not knocking the SLW 24's in anyway or suggesting their pricing is unjustified. Even without owning a SLW 24, I am acutely aware of their superiority through the various videos I have seen of them in operation, a stunning locomotive. My decision to buy a Bachmann is simply based on budget and Jenny's review giving the new Bachmann 24 favourable feedback. Sound is something I will look to install at a later stage.

@@StationRoadModelRailway Hi, I hope you don't mind my adding another comment to our discussion. I didn't check the Rail Exclusive website for the price of the Sutton Loco Works Class 24 when I wrote my comment to Jenny's video last night. I've just had a look and their prices are, standard Class 24 DC version at £185, DCC sound +£110 and sdund and stay alive at +£140. Bare in mind the decoder is a Zimo, so a good one, and the sound has twin speakers, and is a unique recording, I think you would pay that, £140, for a similar upgrade of the Bachmann Class 24. So the only difference is the £68 more you pay for the SLW packaging, presentation and originality of their Class 24. Best wishes and keep safe Dave.

@@StationRoadModelRailway Hi, Yes I think it is, if fact I recall reading you could buy a sound pack to upgrade the basic DC model later if you changed your mind post purchase. Philip Sutton who owns the company, and Rail Exclusive is the kind of guy who will happily chat on the phone about train stuff, he's a real enthusiast not just a business man. I bought their Class 47 sound decoder and found him very helpful indeed.

In a nutshell Bachmann make a Mercedes and Suttons make a Rolls Royce of the 24. For me the Suttons Loco is well worth the cost, it is far superior to what is in itself a very good model from Bachmann. Suttons is literally a museum quality loco. It should have 2 retaining screws to the boxes plinth btw - it shouldn't come loose and surprised with its weight it didn't do itself damage whilst in transit (even with the plastic packaging in place on its roof).

I don’t understand with all the detail and lighting options on today’s locomotives why wouldn’t they add a driver figure especially if the cab is well detailed and lit? I can’t imagine it would add that much cost to the model.

I agree, though it may be that feedback has suggested that this is an area that a lot of modellers prefer a blank slate to add their own.

Until such time as the manufacturers can make a driver who changes ends, it would be a bit of a mixed blessing to have a figure.

I agree the SLW model is excellent, but at a price. I bought a BR green Bachmann 24/1, sound fitted it, love it. Great video and comparison, but I think the detail of the 24/1 would have shown up better in green. Thank you for your channel.

I'm pretty convinced that the Bachmann 24 would be about £30 more expensive if the SLW one didn't exist. Just look at the price of their diesels that have no competition.

A decent comparison review of the Bachmann and SLW Type 2 Sulzer Class 24s. Though I think the SLW wins for its Sound and fine details. Yes the Bachmann maybe a better hauler on this hill test, but the grills for example are less refined and have less depth to them. For me the SLW has my vote for best Class 24. You could call me biased as I have been with the SLW project from the start, but that is far from the truth. If the Bachmann was better I would say so, but it is a very close second. Plus since the development of the SLW 24s, Phillip Sutton has improved the models even more and they are also available in various liveries and variant end specs with joining and plated over end doors, lights and buffer details etc. Next to be released by SLW as your Bachmann model is the Head Code version, then it may need to do a follow up of this comparison for an equal side by side test then.

It is very interesting to see a review of one of these smaller manufacturers' locomotives. Do review a model from OO Works if you ever get a chance; I have a few of their locomotives, which are a little different from those of major manufacturers. Perhaps not quite as refined in some ways, but they make available locomotives not produced by the main manufacturers in decent quality.

A driver in each cab end would be better than no driver at all. Nothing spoils head end view of a train more than seeing an empty drivers seat. Why do manufacturers these days make it so difficult to add a crew.

Thanks for the nice interesting review Jennifer. I still have the old Bachmann 24035 DCC Sound from eBay from Rails of Sheffield. Back then I found it terrific also regarding Sound. I have also a SLW 24009 which outperforms the Bachmann in detail and Sound. I also like the handrails of the SLW a lot better. Having said that I keep the Bachmann which still has it's charm and is still acceptable. I did put a bufferbeam on the SLW with a NEM coupling and left a few bufferbeam details that are not obstructing the coupling. SLW is very good also in communication with them ! kzread.info/dash/bejne/oI5_zsGEhsLPqbg.html Cheers, Jan
