If you were a real architect you would know what constant standing water weight and the weight of all that plant matter at the very top of the structure and extending over the sides would be a big problem. Especially those huge willow trees and the haphazard steel scaffolding and outriggers extending over the top of the building. These vintage Chinese skyscrapers are badly built to begin with, this is a disaster waiting to happen. The leaks and cracks in the below apartments and the elevator shaft should have been a clue. He jeopardized the lives of everyone in that building by putting such a massive weight on top.Furthermore, he did not have any right to extend his apartment to the entire roof of the building and it is 100% likely he tapped into the fire sprinkler system (if the building has one) to water all those plants.

Morgan Violet Hart my thoughts exactly, architecturally it’s a great concept! If they have the money and the means to do it, it’s a retreat for people who wants to get out of the city atmosphere, making better use of the space , but probably not for one person, that project that size is good for the community use. Unless of course the owner got planning permission and the money for it I suppose, but a city would almost never give out a planning permission like that for one unit

That actually looks pretty amazing, especially if that was a public garden, if he had planning permission and made it for public use it would actually be a nice concept for a design, especially in a dense area like Beijing. The mountain side is kinda like a retreat for people either in the area or for the resident on the tower block. It could maybe be implied into other designs. Having a mountain terrace feature is certainly better than just a flat roof. The issue was because the owner wanted it all to himself without even a planning permission. If he did it properly and have a decent proposal it would of have been a nice concept and avoided some errors like cracks and the heavy load coming from the roof

It really is great looking but like some of the residence pointed it out it can compromise the structure and the building can collapse. Also having so much water up there can cause leakage which again can damage the entire building's structure. Something like this should not be done without city permit, architect approvals and inspections.

Battlecry Eden You have no clue what all of the stuff up there was. Just because it's possible to simulate rocks using lightweight materials doesn't mean that everything up there was light. Did you even see all of the plants? That means lots of soil which can hold lots of water and water is very heavy. It was more than one level so there had to be some solid, heavy building materials to hold up a roof that was sturdy enough to hold up all of that planted area. The government officials were also having problems removing the structure, which seems to imply that there was a lot more than lightweight fake rocks up there. It definitely weighed more than the floors below and architects would have accounted for that weight and made sure it was properly distributed to load baring portions of the structure.

Not Sure It was an illegally built structure that was causing severe leaks and cracks in the residential units beneath it. There doesn’t need to be estimates about the load bearing capabilities of the building. Obviously, the building was not designed to support a huge pile of rocks on its roof, nor was the addition safely or properly constructed. It was ordered to be demolished, end of story.

You’d be surprised what skyscrapers are capable of withstanding if given the proper structure and material. This man probably used some for of help from some of the neighbors and in return he paid them. They were probably also told to shut up or he would not pay them anymore. The structure was there for 6 years that not one neighbor knew about it. That’s sketchy and I bet my money at least 10 neighbors and outside workers helped him work on it. Plus the man has to be super wealthy to get so much done in little time.

I feel so honored to be the first comment. All of my hard work and dedication has paid off. Getting the top comment has been a dream of mine for many years, and I would like to thank those who have helped me along the way. Next I would like to thank my parents, for giving birth to me. I want to thank my cat Delete, for always being there for me . I want to thank my family, my friends, my uncle, my aunt, my grandmother, my grandfather, my friend, my neighbors, my gossips, my colleagues, my girls, my babies, my parrot, my dog, my cat, my squirrel, my fish, my refrigerator, my TV, my computer, my facebook, my twitter my youtube channel. I also want to thank President Bush for allowing me to realize that if a mentally challenged child can be president, I can be first comment... This is a special moment in my life and I would like to thank any of my unmentioned friends and family that have helped me along the way. This moment will be an experience that I will never forget. And last but not lease I would like to thank all of the millions of people/fans out there that took time out of their day to celebrate this momentous achievement with me. I cannot stress how much of a big deal this is. I have been trying to be the first comment on a post for like a month. But that has not been possible until this amazing day. Hopefully my good luck will continue. But this is how I did this I would say, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. To all the kids out there reading this, I would like to tell them that the sky has no limit. Being first comment is amazing, thank you everyone!
