No, they are not. This is revision of the song "Mbube" by Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds, first recorded in 1939. Legendary folk singer Pete Seeger with his band the Weavers brought it to the mainstream with his version "Wimoweh" in 1952, with the famous mispronunciation of "Mbube" as "Wimoweh". The Tokens made it the famous song it is today in 1961, keeping the mispronunciation and adding new lyrics.

This is such a fun awesome song. Put out in "61" and they still sound amazing. A hunting song originally sung in Zulu in what is now Swaziland, the original title was "Mbube," which means lion. This was popularized in the 1930s by South African singer Solomon Linda, who recorded it in 1939 with his group, The Evening Birds. It features in The Lion King Disney and many other shows and cartoons. Thanks for the blast from the past. Peace

"Uyi mbube", "I am the lion", is the original chorus, not the popular "wimoweh". Just about what you'd expect a hunter in Africa to tell himself, or in this case, a group of hunters to tell each other.

  • @gl2996

Actually, no. This was not a traditional Zulu hunting song. The copyright clarifications over the years show that Solomon Linda was the originator/creator of the song. Had that not been the case, Disney would not have had to pay lots of royalties, after the fact. The first recording of it, in 1939, included Linda extemporizing what can be recognized as the basic elements of what is now the melody. Lots of folk singers recorded it before a couple of record producers commissioned a doo-wop version of the song in 1961 and paired it with new English lyrics. That's what the Tokens recorded.

This was a hit in the 1960s, the guys are clearly a lot older here but they still sound great. On the original record, the high vocals in the background were done by a female opera singer who was a friend of the band. She came in and did the vocals as a favor to them. Despite the song becoming a huge hit, she never got a dime from the group.

This was a Tokens hit in 1961. I don't know when this concert occurred, but DAMN they sound amazing for it being 40 or 50 years later! BTW, to answer your question, they weren't the first to record it (the first recording was in 1939), but I do believe that The Tokens version was the first time it became a hit in the US. I know it was #1, but I'm not sure for how long. However, it has taken on a life of its own over the decades, turning up constantly in movies and tv shows, commercials, and also being covered by other artists.

FYI ~ "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is a song originally written and recorded by Solomon Linda under the title "Mbube" for the South African Gallo Record Company in 1939. Linda's original was written in isiZulu, while the English version's lyrics were written by George David Weiss."

I just did a quick search, and it was used quite often in TV shows and Movies. Here is the list. A number of movies and TV series have used this song, often sung by the characters. The most popular (and obvious) is in Disney's 1994 movie The Lion King, where it is sung by Timon the meerkat (Nathan Lane) and Pumba the warthog (Ernie Sabella). Other uses include: TV: Friends ("The One After the Superbowl: Part 1" - 1996, sung by the six friends) The Office ("Product Recall" - 2007, sung by John Krasinski and Ed Helms) The Simpsons ("Insane Clown Poppy" - 2000, "Treehouse of Horror XIII" - 2002, My Big Fat Geek Wedding - 2004) The Big Bang Theory ("The Convention Conundrum" - 2014, sung by Jim Parsons and James Earl Jones) Empire ("The Lyon's Roar" - 2015, sung by Jussie Smollett and Leah Jeffries) Movies: Troop Beverly Hills (1989) Matinee (1993) The Sandlot (1993) Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) Private Parts (1997) Bandits (2001) The Bucket List (2007) Dark Shadows (2012)

When I was a lot younger I could sing right along with them, but now my voice has bullfrogged on me. Look up Sherry Baby, from the old days, I can't remember who sang it but they had a high register voice too. Might have been Frankie Valli, but I'll have to check it out. They also had some other songs such as "Tonight I Fell In Love", "I Hear Trumpets Blow" & "Portrait Of My Love". Beginning in 1963, The Tokens also began serving as record producers for other artists, such as the Chiffons, Randy & the Rainbows & the Happenings.

I couldn't be there when my grandson was born, so when he was a few days old my son put the phone to his ear so I could sing to him: "Hush, my darling, don't fear my darling, the lion sleeps tonight, wimoweh."
