IKR... and there are EPIC men in manga since years before. Bob Makihara, Dutch, heck even Muteba Gizenga. Nah, I wouldn't say "high school". The person's got obvious talent but I'd say they need to choose a different coloring method because the watercolor is very drab. They also need to work on their faces because the main characters suffer a LOT from sameface while the bullies have a higher diverse facial range. I have no qualms about tearing down what's supposed to be considered "professional industry art", but I hesitate at this. I have to wonder who they commissioned and their age...

Basically. Lots of comics are fanfic stuff. _Especially on the manga aisle._ There _is_ an audience for that, and it's better to see it done in one-off side projects like this than the main continuity titles (if we had a choice, that is). I disagree with JSG about the art, too. It's absolutely not my thing, but for this kind of material it's ideal; it looks just like so much homoerotic fan art on the interweb.

That's....pretty on the ball. I know even saying this is stereotyping but you can TELL how a book is aimed at a primary demo by the way it's written and drawn and yes....yes, this feels and looks like it's written more for straight women than gay men and I say this as a woman myself considering this type of 'art' is always used for YA and 'girl themed' stuff. Soft, watery colors, the main characters are made as attractive as possible FOR WOMEN and the way the writing is easily digestible akin to something like Twilight and other similar books. But that really does seem to be the norm of so many so-called progressive books. I noticed this back when yaoi was the hot shit back in the early 2000s but it really kind of hit me recently because it was like a snap of de ja vu. I remembered all of this from publishers like Tokyo Pop and how they would advertise their yaoi books and again, it was for girls, not BOYS and straight girls most of all because there was always that side hop that 'Oh, maybe he'll be bi just for me an I can still fuck him!' So if anything, progressives are just those annoying yaoi fan girls who never grew up and became more annoying who think all gay men are their uke and seme dreams.

As someone who has been personally attacked as "homophobic" by fujioshis over the years because I don't find gay stories appealing, I can safely say this only appeals to the fujioshis and no one else. The boys look weirdly drawn and not in any way remotely close to what I, a straight woman, likes to see in men. Everything is centered around Aquanot being gay, which doesnt interest me story wise. (I read dumb romance novels written like the person only just now learned how to write English, my standards are Not that high.) And its changing the entirety of an established character for the sake of "woke points☆". (Its all fake and done for visuals only. There's no substance to these sorts. Not yo mention uts an established character that already has a fan base. You end up passing every fan off and make no money because even the fujioshis won't buy it.)

I aint no tree-hugger but you know how many trees were killed for this to get published? The travesty.

People deemed “oppressed” don’t need to follow the rules, because people with authority use their power for activism rather than fairness. Have a friend who was sexually assaulted by another boy in school. But it was permitted because the boy was “exploring his sexuality.” When my friends dad asked the teacher if it was okay for my friend to touch the girls in class, he was told, “your son would be suspended immediately.” She apparently had no problem with this obvious double standard. This was over a decade ago and the Karen’s have only gotten louder.

Certain Asian and African subgroups DO share some similarities in physical features, but then again, so do some Asian and Caucasian subgroups, or some African and Caucasian subgroups. When it comes to artwork, however, it becomes a bit more subjective, since the artist may have subconsciously inserted some similarities to another race into the drawings. But really, saying "Blacks and Asians share a lot of common physical features" is inaccurate.

Captain America, What true patriot while loyal to his country you do what’s right not what’s popular. Oh wait people who are calling the shots are starting turn the heroes are trying to avoid what they originally were. Real heroes try to help others no matter what, that’s what Stan lee did, that’s how Bill finger did, and that’s how they should be done. This reminds me of the (in)famous Harry Potter fanfic "My Immortal." Everyone is out of character, homosexual relationships are sexualized, and it's completely at odds with the genre of the source material. "My Immortal" appeared in 2006, so the teeny-boppers who were into that kind of stuff then have grown up to be the comic writers of this stuff today.

Honestly the idea of YA graphic novels introducing readers to lesser known characters sounds good on paper but this is definitely not the way to go (and this is coming from a gay person)

When I was eight I drew my first ever comic, a Superhero comic called "Poo Man" It was literally a piece if shit in a cape, The main villain was a brain with glasses called "Brain Burgle Boy Type Thing" (idk I was 8, I'm surprised I remember it 21 years later. The entire story was on a single page crudely coloured in with felt tip pens, I was so proud of it I covered the whole page in selotape and have kept it ever since. I don't know why I brought this up.

Maybe the comic industry wouldn’t be a “niche” market if they didn’t make books that targets an audience of 200 people.

You know I got a rejection letter from Peter Simeti at Alterna yesterday, he said thank you for submitting and explained the book got rejected as it was too off-brand for there line, I respect that, he doesn't want to alienate his audience with content that he sees as out of touch with it, I just wish DC had his common sense.

@@jic1 it was a homage to classic marvel comics and pulp magazines where the first superhero team is accused of altering reality in the event that gave them there powers to create the fantasy kitchen sink that there world has become.

I make my own stories at this point. My stories include Jason Todd/Red Hood who bonds to a Symbiote with the powers of Savage Dragon. I prefer 90’s heroes/anti-heroes and Isekai anime. The anime industry hasn’t been poisoned with PC wokeness.

I make my own as well. I had one where the main JL Heroes and LoD Villains are turned to crystals and it's up to Zatanna, Animal Man, Miss Martian, Scarescrow and my OC to save them BUT they also get the powers of the main JLH and LoD. Scarecrow gets a green Lantern Ring instead of a Yellow lantern one and has to learn from my OC who managed to get a yellow lantern ring. The two work together to not only get the others back but also to make Scarecrow earn the Yellow Lantern ring and eventually become a hero like Batman. I know my shit is crak headed but at least it makes the powers not onl relevent but nessesary and there is a reason he goes through all that change. Plus this aint never gonna be published so I can be mc-fucking wild too.

agreed. I thought he was sub-30 at the oldest, by the sound of his voice. of course, I've sounded like gravel in a in can since I was 13yo, so I can't say I'm a qualified judge.

And then DC employee or writers will say "If you don't buy my comic or don't like my comic your a homophobic" I'm not even American I find these Western people are crazy and funny to laugh at :D

Khalid Ahmed I read the raven one, I’d say it’s okay. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s not overly political. At most from what I remember there’s one scene where a lesbian character tells off a bully, but that’s it.

Tbh I never really got into comics apart from the movies that were inspired by them but I never knew it’s been going down this road. JSG I really like your takes on these issues: they actually sound well thought out and you hold no punches, not to mention the use of literary terms (shit really helped me appreciate comics on a literary scale).
