Who are the winners and losers of Trump's tariff plan?

President Trump announced plans to tax the import of steel and aluminum as it enters the United States. Yahoo Finance columnist Rick Newman spoke to CBSN about who benefits and who loses out from the White House's plan.

He forgot to say the price of trucks to transport goods and fuel will go up which is passed on to the customers and drive the price up on goods over all. Thats more then a few cents we are looking at. The price of new cars will be up which drive up the price on used cars. Farm equipment goes up which drives up vegetable and meat prices and it goes on.

+Kermit The Frog First, Bush administration did the similar thing on Steel and Aluminum industry, and didn't get good results. So he stopped after months. The higher cost will force the industries that are targeted at other counties' market out from US. For instance, US automobiles sells millions cars as well as tens of billions dollars of agricultural products like beans and corns each year to China. Secondly, large portion of American labor nowadays aren't willing to do nor qualified for the jobs in assembly line because of the welfare and education systems as well as the impact of drug. The employees in government now are more than twice as the number in manufactory sector. Thirdly, another critical reason forcing manufactory to move out from US is that sector of finance and bank dominates the US economy and greedily sucks profits from all sectors. Even government can make the companies invest in US, they will likely put the money in stock or bond market, not in entity economy. Compared with the quick profit from stock market, investment in entity economy in US will take years and may not see any result even after Trump administration.

Kermit The Frog So either those manufactures pack up their stuff and leave, or they will be forced to raise product prices since they cant get the raw materials as cheap as before. And when prices rise less people by said product. Steel and aluminium are used in a lot of stuff so this will affect all those industries.

Kermit The Frog So its either price rise on products that harms consumumers. Labor cuts which, you quessed it. Means less jobs around. Automation, which again means job cuts, or getting cheaper logistical services, which given how big these guys are I think they have done already. What exactly could they do that wouldnt hurt americans in some way?

+Saberspear Unless Trump adminstration changes the situation that greedy bankers dominate the US economy and makes investment in entity economy more profitable, the higher tariff won't change anything. If Trump's tax reform was specifically targeted at and made more tax cut for the manufactory sector, I would agree on the higher tariff. But now, what's the point.

Brian Kovac someone fail high school. A car cost $20000. When a car go up 25% because of tariff. That car now cost $5000 more. Who want to buy a car that is $25000 but have features of $20000 cars. People dont buy stuff when they are expensive. That is why everything is made in china because it is cheaper.

Brian Kovac yeah IDIOT how do you transport cars, washer machines and other things on plastic vehicles, and the machines that makes them are not made out of paper either. The industry is going to find a way to maximize their profits, either by raising the prices or robots are going to do the jobs now because they're not going to get the cheap steel or aluminum from China anymore. That's if no trade war breaks out then inflation really going hit everybody.

Ok 3 cents of aluminum on a beer can x 10% Peanuts. How about a non-cherry picked example, a car. Cars use Steel and Aluminum throughout most of its construction. Still think the tariffs are going to be peanuts Mr. Ross? This Tariff is about politics not economics. Yes it will help the heavy metals industry and hurt everyone else, just like when Bush tried this in 2002.

It's $300 per ton of steel and $2,000 per ton of aluminum. The average car uses about 130kg of aluminum and 1 ton of steel. In terms of the total cost of the car, the increased tariff on these materials is still peanuts.

mmarsh1972 I wanted to read the article you sent me, but I don't have a subscription so I was unable to read it, but thanks for sending it. However I can't see how these raised tariffs could possibly effect vehicle salse that much if at all. Vehicles are very expensive, $300 is really a tiny amount campared to the price of a vehicle. I think we also have to take into account how much of the materials used in production are from recycled sources. Most people don't buy a new vehicle with cash, they buy them on credit over a long period of time. If a $300 increase in price is a deal breaker, then maybe buying a new vehicle isn't the best financial decisions in the first place. Most poor people buy vehicles from the secondhand market anyway. There is actually a lot of variables I can think of that people are ignoring in this topic, It's complex. If you have a different perspective I would like to know why, maybe you know something I don't?

If we build durable products, that are worth repairing, they can be more expensive since they would hold longer. The throw-away society has to end. Whether there are tariffs or not: we just make more countries dislike us, but that is not the real problem since this idiocy will hopefully be reversed by the next, a real president. Building durable goods that last three times as long can cost twice as much and our workers will have work AND a decent wage.

winners and losers? ultimately after domestic industry adjusts, the American worker wins. Considering trade deficits, we would be better off trading with nobody and manufacturing everything ourselves. There are very few things we couldn't manufacture as cheaply or cheaper than anyone else. I know this concept will warp the brains of economists who have been trained differently, but think about it.

History is full of wars that were "good, and easy to win" . . . but that dragged on in all kinds of unforseen spin-off and ended up costing far, far more than was originally thought. The ultimate losers are the consumers -- with most gains being short-term. There is the very real fact that with softwood lumber for example, the US demand FAR outstrips domestic production. The mill owners prosper, perhaps some jobs are created there. But in short order a significant percentage of the population can no longer afford a new home and profit-wave of demand crashes. With steel and aluminum there is the very real fact that US trade unions waste a LOT of money, slow down production, stymie creative solutions and drive up the cost of US metal to the point where protectionism is the only way they can compete on a global market. Like the softwood tariffs, it's just further inflating a bubble who's only destiny, is to burst. Perhaps at time when the US economy, crippled by trade wars, can least afford it. Yes, the US is BIG. But her National debt is MONSTROUS. It will take far far less than the POTUS thinks to destabilize such a nation. Already the stock markets are wobbling.

How much would the latest iphone cost if it were made in the USA? A lot of wages, not just in the US, are geared to the availability of cheap goods. If those goods were all made in their respective home countries, prices would sky rocket and wages would have to follow. Then it would cost more to produce them, then wages would have to go up to buy them and keep the manufacturers in business etc etc etc

So if this happens will led to increase in the price of everything made of steel or aluminium in USA, cars, trucks, construction, infrastructure, food packaging.... Etc. I think EU or Canada put more tariff on USA car import or appliance.

I dont care what will happen on Americans. But I am sure that China's economy will be negatively impacted. As a Chinese, I hope government can help us get through this tough time, and achieve our CHINA 2025 target !

Not one comment by media and politicians that the US has been in a trade war for at least 25 years. Nor that 140+ countries use a VAT tax that is a de facto across the board tariff on all imports. The US does not have a VAT tax. The VAT is protectionism. Mexico has a 16% Vat tax. So everything US exports to Mexico is charged 16%, everything Mexico ships to the US is free. Why nafta sux so bad. Calling that a free market is a bold faced lie.

So what I'm learning here if the blue collier worker get a good paying job then it is bad for everyone else and we need to stop it. Well blue collier workers if the other people in the US doesn't want us to have a descent job then if a war breaks out don't be there. Don't go serve, don't go into manufacture the war materials, let the people that it would hurt go fight and die for their money. If we're not allowed to take part in the good economy. Then we don't need to share in the bad times. Let them get their children back in a box.

Obama tried to do the same thing with tires and it ended up in disaster. It's one thing for Trump to ignore Obama's good decisions, but it's another thing for Trump to refuse to learn from Obama's mistakes

gamer7916. Sorry, we have been losing the economic trade war for a very longtime now, meaning we can't keep this up for very much longer without the US falling flat on it's face.

United States of America is in trouble... Take it from me, the dude from a 3rd world country... I see traits of what causes downfalls... Trump should have done this in a procedural manner on specifics like Obama because targeting a whole industry against a country's exportation is a call for war... He is a bad negotiator, he says he's in talks yet he's making such an irresponsible move!!!

Idiot is looking at the cost of a drink can, how much will it drive up the cost of American automobiles which have a lot of aluminum and steel in them. Make an engine and transmission 10% more expensive and millions cannot afford them. He is not going to give us the tariffs to spend on more expensive consumer goods.

Nobody buys steel or aluminum from the US. China can out produce America driving the prices down. Everybody buys steel from China anyway despite high tariffs. The US steel industry is just trying to protect its home market but Chinese steel produces will just lower their prices to account for the higher tariff.

If jobs are created domestically, they will be without healthcare, low paying, tax-payer subsidized and the worker will be applying for food stamps. The government will still take the numbers and say, x amount of jobs created.
